Canon 24-70mm mkii lens comparison 24-105mm L lens

Recently purchased this Mkii lens to complement a 24-105mm L. Good points: sharp - even at f2.8 - well into the corners. However DOF is very slim, when wide open. So in many cases you won't be shooting f2.8. In comparison to the 24-105mm both lens are equally sharp at f8. However the 105mm image quality tails off quickly at f4/ 5.6 - images are noticeably softer. If you need a superfast lens the 24-70mm will be your first choice. The speed does come at a significant cost though, prices are sky-high. If you don't need the speed, the105mm is still a worthy option at a third of the price; used. The extra 35mm's of reach is also a big plus. A final thought - I'm just no good at getting sharp images handheld. For good results, I resort to a tripod. I was so excited to receive this lens as I know it’s a really good one, but when I put it on my 6D mark II, the image was really dark. I had to put the ISO at 5K to have a glimpse of light. The focus was working just fine but it took me some time to figure out that even though it’s written f2.8 on my screen, the lens was unluckily locked at f22. I got a full refund without any issues after returning it so for that service I’m putting more than 1 star.

Faulty item
25 December 2023

I bought this item nearly a month ago, but when it arrived, the lens didn't work. It stopped at 28mm and couldn't go all the way to 24mm and I could only take a photo at f2.8, which was just pitch black. As soon as I increased the aperture, an error message came up saying that there was a communication error between the lens and the camera. Overall a negative experience at a time when I needed the lens the most.

I bought this lens about a month ago and I'm really happy I got it. It works well and it's just what I needed to kick start my photography again on a budget. Well worth the buy. Little bit of ware and tear as expected at less than half the price from new!

I returned the first TWO editions of this lens back to Adorama. I found success with the 3rd copy. I set up static objects and took shots at all f stops, focal lengths and ISOs on a 7D set on a tripod and fired with a remote. I compared image quality - mainly focus but also edge distortion and color saturation - between this lens, a cheap Canon kit lens (18-55mm f3.5-5.6) and my Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS II. The first 2 copies of this lens were the worst than the kit lens. When I called Canon service, they claimed no knowledge of defect but were willing to take it apart to find out - I said 'no thanks'.Throughout this ordeal, Adorama has been absolutely great!!! Customer service was understanding and for the most part, very responsive. Sure, sometimes email replies required 24+ hours, but I suspect they're busy. I'll definitely buy from them again. If you're willing to keep trying, you'll eventually find a good copy.Quick focus even in low light, amazing bokeh. I didn't give it 5/5 stars simply because I reserve a perfect score for the 70-200mm f2.8L IS II - an absolute joy to use; incredibly fast, quiet and tack sharp. Maybe the lack of IS is what's making the difference in performance between these 2 L series lenses.

New or Used, This Lens is One You Need to Have!

I bought this lens to use with my Canon T2i. I have been told many times that it's better to invest in getting superior glass (lenses) for an average camera than to invest in a superior camera with only average lenses. The advice was right on. I can take incredible pictures with the "L" lenses that I have including the Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM. I was concerned about the crop factor with my T2i whereby I wouldn't be able to capture a wide angle close up shot (i.e., full torso or body at about 4 feet away). My worries were for naught. The difference is not really noticeable in these situations. This lens is really impressive. I was amazed by the picture quality and the ability to sharply focus on an object only a foot away. Even a used lens can be a beaut and also saves you a bit of money.

Reliable work horse.
2 June 2022

I have been a professional photographer for 25 years. This quickly became my go to lens for events and some portraits. I bought several of the version 2 lenses that are still the current model. I broke them all in the course of my business. Never dropped, just broke. I have worn out a couple of these and had one stolen, but this is a solid work horse. A bit heavier, possibly a fraction slower in focus. But these are built better, last longer, have as good quality glass and is my preference. Hope this helps.

Solid, Dependable, Workhorse Lens that's always on my camera for events.

As a professional photographer, this lens is a must-have lens. It's not the sexy f/1.4 lens that you can do great shallow depth of focus for portraits. This is a workhorse lens that's solid, dependable and reliable. The Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L lens is sharp, and is really one of the key go-to lenses when shooting an event. I use it for all of the group / family photos, and it's wonderful when shooting at f/14 to keep everything in focus. Then, when the lights go down on the dance floor, it excels at f/2.8, and focuses quickly, even in low light. I've tried using other lenses, such as the Sigma lens, and while they are good, they're just not as high quality. I was debating whether or not to go with this lens vs. the f/4 version that has IS (image stabilization), and having the extra stop (f/2.8) vs. f/4 for the other lens means that I can stop action a lot faster, as opposed to stabilizing an image that is slower moving. This is a step up from the older 28-70 mm f/2.8 lens, and not as recent as their newer one with IS, but it works, and it's 100% reliable and solid. Yes, it's heavier, and it's not their latest and greatest, but this is a solid lens that I'll use for as long as it works. And when it doesn't, I'll get it repaired.
