Been using this lenses for 8+ years. Does well in low light, pretty fast compared to some counterparts, love the aperture; not too wide, nor to little. I've had no issues. It's an old reliable. Just a good lenses for a good price.

95% goodness of 1.2L lens at 1/5th of the cost ...

Just as sharp, focuses faster, has less flare, cost helluva lot less than Canon's vaunted 85mm f/1.2 L lens. This lens also has instant manual over-ride, is relatively light weight and compact, focuses accurately and is overall joy to use. Unless you must have f/1.2 lens needing to shoot wide open all the time, this f/1.8 lens is much better general purpose lens. I shoot both Nikon and Canon and this lens is on par with Nikon's newer 85mm f/1.8 lens, although this Canon lens is one of their older design. You can find great deal on a used one everywhere. For my style of shooting, it is one of the must have lenses in my bag.

When i tested it after receiving, i got issue with the manual and auto focus. I checked and it is somewhat a common mechanical issue for this lens. I opened and check the ring for issues but none was found. I found some accumulated fine dust (not sure where it came) and cleaned it. After assembling it back. The manual and auto focus works well. Unfortunately, the dust somewhat contaminated the internal glass which i will be cleaning if i have the time. Just for advice, buy brand new if you do not have any knowledge on repairing or cleaning. You will be disappointed if you dont know how to fix this.

Good for indoor sports. Good value for the money.
15 March 2018

My girls are volleyball players, so I needed some lenses that take good indoor sports photography. It's really hard to take good pictures in low light conditions and not get that irritating blur, but this prime lens does the trick. You get good sharp photos where the subject is perfectly in focus but the background is fuzzy. Awesome effect. For the money, it's really hard to beat this lens.

I'm happy with my purchase!
17 November 2019

My 85mmm arrived on time and in perfect condition. I have only had one opportunity to use it, but my results were what I had hoped they would be. During my test I didn't have low light, but I'm confident this would do a great job in that situation. Personally, I might not open it as much as I did in these example pics because I'd like a little more in focus, but for 2.0 these shots showed me I can control the performance and the lens will do an awesome job. I am thrilled to own it and plan on taking it out and using it again soon!

It matches image quality, colour and fast focusing of Canon 50mm 1.4 lens

I got this lens for portraits and low light photography, and I am quite impressed with it. It is well built, and the USM autofocus is fast and quiet. Even on crop sensor cameras, like the Canon 7D like I use, the focal length is great, equivalent to a 135mm lens on full frame. It is better than 85mm 1.2 L lens because its speed of focus, image sharpness, weight and cost. At wide open at 1.8, in high contrast areas it picks up some purple fringing and not razor sharp like my 50mm 1.4 at 2.0. But once you the f setting is 2.8 lens really becomes sharp as per 50mm 1.4 set 2.0 and gets ridiculously sharp around f/5.6. of course as you increase the f stop you loose the shallow depth of field that you get from 50mm at 1.8 or 2.o Also, when you need fast focusing, this ... MoreI got this lens for portraits and low light photography, and I am quite impressed with it. I use it for indoor applications for weddings, birthdays and church events. It has great colors too, and I like the sharp images it produces. On a 5D you get the ideal 85mm focal length perfect for portraits photography. I recommendation this lens to anyone who is looking for 85mm lens that has fast focus, sharp image, outstanding color for wide range applications and light weight. The price-to-image-quality ratio is unbeatable, and its built to last. Just as my 50mm 1.4 not built like a L lens tank and does not have IS but image sharpness at 2.0/f, color, fast focusing, light weight and price it beats all L lens in my view. The 85mm 1.8 lens performs equally brilliantly at the 85mm focal length.

Reunited, and it feels so good!
3 January 2022

Ive been out of photography for some time. Getting back into it, Ive purchased a new camera (R6) and five lenses (mix of EF and RF glass). This, my most recent purchase, was to fill a somewhat sentimental gap in my setup. I had the FD version years ago and it was one sweet lens. I was in high school then and I remember it costing more than the AE-1 I was using at the time (and a serious drain on my meager teenagers bank account). It was an investment then and, while Ive just started using it, I can tell its going to be a winner. Its a good size even with the adapter, fast focusing, and the image quality is on-par with my L-glass. For the money, its a fantastic value and is really useful on non-cropped cameras.

So Bokeh!
2 May 2019

I super love this lens for taking portraits. I get that buttery and creamy smooth bokeh that makes my subject stand out from the background. Although a 50mm 1.8 lens would do the same trick, you can get more of that bokeh effect with 85mm. If you want to make the background blurry but recognizable, 50mm it is. If you want more bokeh, 85mm is the way to go. Normally, a brand new Canon 85mm F1.8 would cost around $365. I got mine for $300 yeah baby!

Worth every penny.
1 June 2015

Look, this is the best quality lens you are going to buy that doesn't have a red ring around it. If you don't have the cash for an L lens, than I would highly recommend the this 85mm for portraiture. On a crop body sensor (which are most consumer level Canon DSLRs) the field of view is closer to a 135mm lens so its on the long end of portrait lenses which is fine with me. The booked this lens produces -- even on a crop body -- is desirable. It really shines on a full frame or 35mm camera. The lens is fairly hefty and is quite a bit heavier than cheap kit zoom lenses. That said, this probably isn't the lens you want to walk around with. For that, I'd recommend the 24mm f/2.8 EF-S pancake or for a full frame camera, the 40mm f/2.8 pancake.
