There are plenty of 5 star reviews for this lens, most are several years out of date. So here's a 2020 view. Build quality is ok, the plastics aren't too cheap. You shouldn't be disappointed. Weight: Some say the lens is heavy, but I disagree. The body and lens combo should feel balanced, which is achieved when mounted to a typical DSLR. Image Quality - there's way too much emphasis on the constant F2.8. Tested at F2.8 with a 17mm focal length, the image is soft (not just the corners). I took the same shot on a cheap Motorola phone, the F/L appears to be about the same - roughly 17mm. The phone won. A bit sharper when viewed side by side. I was very surprised, things have moved on - a lot! Yes - it's not as wide, but the extra 50mm of zoom power is much more useful in the real world. If you need a wide shot, take two in portrait & stich together. You'll get a better image with less distortion & more resolution - sorted! (All test shots used a 7D mk2, at ISO 100, using a tripod & remote shutter release for consistency).

I have both a Canon 80D and 6D series ii. I like to maintain a set of lenses for each camera for backup purposes, but what was missing was a decent kit lens for the 80D. I had been thinking about buying the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS lens for a while, and when B&H had a good Black Friday deal on it, I took the plunge. It was well worth it. The pictures are very sharp at all focal lengths, autofocus works well and colors are very natural. IS is only 3 stop but I haven't experienced any issues at slower shutter speeds. Also, in my test against my 18-135 STM, the STM is quiet, sharp, has good range (I really like that 55-70 section), and with its 4-stop IS it shoots "faster" than its aperture would indicate.If the 17-55 were updated, maybe with newer IS, or with a newer more quiet motor, or expanding its range to 70mm, it would seem perfect to me. As is, I'm still on the fence and will probably keep renting it as a supplement if I need it for a particular trip.

First, the build quality is not L lens quality, but you also pay for what you get when it comes to build quality. If you drop a lens off a mountain, it will break no matter what material it is. Second, the focus ring sometimes gets a sort of a grinding feel when you turn it, as if there is sand inside of it, but this is rare and goes away after turning it a few times. Finally, after using the zoom ring for over 6 months, lens creep happens, though it is rare and very slight when it happens. It seems to creep slightly more when it is humid outside. Be careful not to pull on the end of the lens, for that will make your lens creep worse quicker.All in all, I am very glad I chose this lens. The sharpness is unreal for the price, the colors are very accurate, and the focal range is perfect for my shooting style, mostly landscapes with some portraits. It is an awesome lens to take with you for travelling, and a great one if you want to vlog and shoot photography.
I utilized this lens with a Canon 80D to shoot and record dance theatre rehearsals and performances. Lighting in our performance space has been a challenge and this lens performed significantly better than the stock lens that came with the camera when capturing the dancing in the low theatrical lighting. Well-lit shots looked spectacular. I gave serious consideration to utilizing the 'keep it' purchase option, but elected to re-evaluate the need later. The staff was very helpful, calling after my order was placed to confirm that the camera I had would work with the lens, and the packaging/shipping process was impeccable.

It's not light, but I like the weight which helps keep it steady. I bought it along with an EF-S 10-18, but I've only used that lens a couple of times because the 17-55 performs so much better. I have a full frame camera and there's simply nothing that compares to this 17-55 for the full frame that isn't at least twice the price and for that reason alone I won't be abandoning the T6i anytime soon. If you can't get a great image out of this lens, an L series lens isn't going to make it happen either. My left arm and hand prevented face to ground contact, but my right hand was holding my Canon 200EG backpack bag with the camera and lens, and 70-200mm f/2.8L III lens. Needless to say they hit reasonably hard, and I was anticipating total disaster. Had anything survived? Miraculously the telephoto suffered no damage, and the 80D and 17-55 lens also came through unscathed. The only casualty was the lens hood for the 17-55mm which had cracked from edge to mounting rim. It had taken the greatest impact and sacrificed its life in a good cause. So, for everyone that complains about the lack of a hood with non L lenses, just give in and buy a hood when you buy any lens. You never know when it will pay for itself. I have used the camera and both lenses for two years since then and performance has been outstanding. Even with a cracked hood (which I promptly replaced) the lens was subjected to a tremendous jolt and showed that its build quality is just fine, thank you. The Canon backpack also showed its worth as well. Canon products may seem pricey at times, but, in my case they have proved their worth many times over.
