I'm currently using a T6i body, which the 24mm compliments well. The wider focal length and the wider aperture both aid my style of photography, which tends to be people indoors, often boudoir or erotic. I do wish that it had image stabilization which would help with video. Regarding video, the focal length on a crop sensor is good for use on a tripod capturing an entire room, but handheld is still too tight for selfie or closeup recording. A kit lens at 18mm does better, provided the lighting is adequate. For landscape images, the 24mm does well enough, but for that I don't really need a lens that fast, so I lean towards the 10-18mm ultra-wide zoom, despite its maximum aperture being 4.5.As most agree, cost-to-value on this lens is incredible, much like its older sister the 40mm pancake. I do feel like the 24mm has somehow managed to have the STM system improved over the 40. Both are good pancake lenses. Many talk about this being the best "walk-around" lens for a crop sensor body. I'll admit that it's easier to haul around, but it's only 80-something grams lighter than an 18-55mm kit lens, which could be better as a "walk-around" lens, aside from the wider aperture the 24mm offers. Personally, I've found myself leaving the 18-135 nano USM on my camera body most of the time, due to it's greater versatility.I really do love what the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens can do for me, but even more so, I appreciate what it makes me do. Being a fixed focal length, it forces me to see things a little differently, and certainly gets me to zoom with my feet. With 24mm not being particularly flattering to most humans, it makes me get a little more creative with how I shoot, but always gives me a good chance at getting great images with it.Overall, I'd stay this should be one of the first prime lens you purchase, along with the latest "nifty fifty".

I'm writing to inform any users of this lens of a little Lens Shade and Filter hack. The Canon EF-s 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens has a 52mm filter thread. I purchased the Canon ES-52 Lens Hood. With the wide angle of view of the 24mm lens the depth of the lens hood was minimal and also had a 52mm filter thread. Most all of my other Canon EF/EF-S lenses have a 58mm filter thread and I have many 58mm filters. Here's the hack. I purchased from B&H a senseiPRO BRASS 52mm to 58mm STEP-UP RING and an extra 58mm CANON LENS CAP. For its price point - around $130 or so - this lens is a must have!
22 June 2020

So glad I bought this lens! For the price, I really don't think there's anyhthing out there that can beat it. Nice, fast and bright f2.8 aperture really helps in low-light situations. The metal lens mount looks and feels very sturdy. Being an EF-S mount, it will only work properly on Canon's crop sensor cameras. Though it will physically mount on Canon's full-frame DSLRs like the 5D, you will see significant vignetting, since this lens does not project a large enough image circle to be able to fully cover the full-frame image sensor area. Stick to using it on crop sensor bodies, like the XXD series (40D, 77D, 80D, etc), 7D and the Rebel series, and you'll be just fine. When mounted to crop sensor bodies with Canon's 1.6x crop factor, you will end up with a field of ... MoreSo glad I bought this lens! When mounted to crop sensor bodies with Canon's 1.6x crop factor, you will end up with a field of view roughly equivalent to that of a 38.4 mm lens, which is a terrific, natural field of view that is perfect for general photography and especially good for street photography, which, I feel, is where this lens really shines, since it's small, light and unobtrusive. It keeps your kit small and less intimidating, so you can get those candid shots that you might miss with a larger camera/lens combo. Speaking of size, this lens, when mounted to the camera body, sticks out barely an inch, and weighs only a few ounces, so it's light and easy to carry all day. It is autofocus, and features Canon's STM autofocus motor, which is quick and very quiet. Great for video. The front element does not rotate when focusing, so you can use circular polarizing filters with no issues. It's recommended though, that you do not attach anything really large or heavy filters, since the STM motor -- while quick -- is not very strong and could potentially be damaged by too much resistance. There is a very thin manual focus ring too, should the user wish to make manual fine focus adjustments. There is no image stabilization, but I have not found that to be very necessary with fast, wide primes, so i personally do not find that a significant drawback. Images from this lens are sharp, clear and punchy, with good depth and contrast, and excellent color rendition. For its price point - around $130 - this is an excellent purchase, and very worthy of a place in your kit.

Great bang for the buck for a wide angle lens
26 December 2021

I have an old Canon Rebel T3i (from 2011), and my first lens was the inexpensive but amazing 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. Although I eventually moved to another camera ecosystem (Sony), I still enjoy breaking out my old cameras. I decided to take a chance on bringing the Rebel to photograph a recent event but needed a decent wide angle lens. (It was a comic convention, so pics were of cosplayers like misselliehoneybee and mayan.goddess on IG.) This 24mm f/2.8 lens went on sale, and I also had a coupon and rewards points that knocked off another 25% off. But this lens surprised me with how awesome the images it captured were. It’s small size paired with the light weight of the Rebel made it just as much a joy to use as my Sony mirrorless camera system. I ended up using it 95% of the time compared to the 50mm lens. I highly recommend this lens if you’re using Canon’s line of APS-C crop sensor cameras.

My New Walk-around!

I'm getting old, yep I was born when Truman was president but having said that, I needed something on my camera body a bit lighter than other lenses. I shoot macro or close-up a lot and its hard to find a lens that shoots macro and is good for general photography as well, however, Canons EF-S 28mm STM seems to fit the bill for me. The lens is great with or without using a flash, and makes for a modest close focus macro while being ready and able for that next snapshot of the dog, wife, or kids. Depth of field is good, excellent sharpness and the color is great. Auto focus is smooth and quite and manual focus exacting. So glad I purchased this item
17 August 2021

We wanted to be able to attach our DSLR camera to Vortex spotting scope. Already had the digiscoping attachment for my phone camera but wondered if better photos could be taken using the DSLR. Love to travel & take photos of eagles, elk, bear, wildlife. Read that purchasing a 'pancake' lens should work best for digiscoping. My Canon Rep suggested B&H. Pictures using this lens and the digiscoping attachment bought elsewhere take excellent photos, so clear!Big surprise though is the quality of photos I can now take using this lens alone for capturing tiny details of butterflies & other insects. Love it

Wonderful walk-about lens

Being a macro shooter, I often find myself pushing the limits of a lens to get as close as possible, though the lens is not especially suited for macro. This lens has a recommended close focusing range of 6 inches from sensor plane but will focus closer. However, using a flash at close focus requires a diffuser and possibly much lower flash settings than usual with bright colors e.g., whites and yellows. The lens is sharp, has good color, produces good DOF, took me a little getting used to, as mentioned I am a macro shooter but I wanted something to lessen the weight of my camera when out and about and still serve a great many photographic situations.
