I am by no means a professional photographer and actually just purchased my first DSLR in November, so I'm still learning the ins and outs of photography. The only other lens I have is the kit lens that came with my Canon EOS Rebel 1000D/XS but I was looking for something that would do wildlife and objects that are harder to approach. It makes it possible to take pictures up to four stops closer on your camera than a lens without. I have never had a blurry picture with the IS on, but have with it turned off. The only slight con is that it appears to drain your battery power somewhat faster than if you did not use it, but it is not significant enough to worry about. The lens produces high quality images with nice bokeh on the full zoom. Bokeh is the 'blurring' of the background to make the image you are focusing on stand out more. I have used it to photograph my cats, wild birds, and children so far all with outstanding success. There is a loud motor sound when using the AF on the lens and it does not continually focus. If you need to refocus on an object, you need to lift your finger off of the shutter button and depress halfway again. Overall, for the price of this lens, it is a great telephoto starter. It is a permanent in my camera bag and I highly recommend it for photo enthusiasts or amateur photographers looking for a decent, affordable telephoto lens.

I rank myself at the intermediate level (both in artistic and sports images). This will not get you those glossy beautiful images the pro's get on the NFL sidelines. As long as you understand that beforehand, it's a wonderful lens. I keep mine in my bag at ALL times.

Excellent for the price. Only the tiniest chromatic aberration at full zoom. Telephoto lens starts where the stock 18 - 55mm lens ends. So complements that lens well. Only problem is not many camera cases support the extra length lens.
I've only had my camera (Rebel T7) for about 2 months, this is the 1st lens I purchased aside from what came with the camera (18-55mm). I wanted something that had a better zoom but still in budget. I've had this lens for almost a month and so far I love it! I've taken around 550 pictures with it since the day it came in and it's now my main lens. Everything seems to work as it should and best to my acknowledge since I'm new at this. Autofocus works well and is decently quiet, but again I am new to all of this . I'm excited for football season to see how well I can do with action shots.
I purchased this lens to photograph the birds in my yard. As a BEGINNER, I feel like this is a GREAT lens to test the waters and gauge how interested you really are in bird/nature photography. If you don't wind up liking bird/nature photography, you won't be out a ton of money. But if you ARE into it and you LOVE it, you will probably (like me) be thinking about the next lens you want to purchase after using this lens for a few weeks! If you can get fairly close to your objects, this lens is perfect. If your objects are more than 30ft away, well, you're probably going to want a bigger lens. But all-in-all, it's a great lens for a beginner! Also, I love the AF on this lens--works really well!

It is not super fast, but usually also not slow at all, I use it on the T5i and the AF nails it pretty fast so don't worry about loosing too many pictures because of it. As for the downside, besides the all-plastic built which feels a little like holding a toy, there is a real one major downside for this lens - and it is the Canon 55-250mm STM. For extra 50$ the STM offers a quicker and INTERNAL focus. AT first I thought that it is not such a huge upgrade, but after using the IS II for an hour I realized that saving myself those 50$ was a huge mistake. Sure, the image quality and the optics are quite the same - but this lens rotates A LOT ... If this combination works out well, then I'll invest a little in upping the spec...if not, then I've got a flexible and powerful little vacation kit, that weighs (and costs to replace!) a fraction of my 5D MkIII or 6D with L series glass! The lens is inexpensive, so pretty much what I expected...build looks / feels a little cheap, executing manual focus racks produces an effect like the zoom is moving too...but the first results of using it for stills and video are VERY passable. I don't expect a lifetime warranty with this lens, but it just saw me through a vacation in Europe, and a made its money back by ... Even though I enjoy the lens, I have to admit that I bought the wrong model of it. I was looking for the updated version, which has a faster autofocus and is less noisy. I must have been extremely tired after searching the internet for a day to find one, that I overlooked what it said. Anyway, it is not bad in terms of sharpness, but I will eventually buy the latest model.

Sure it feels a little plasticy, but I have never felt like it was going to let me down if the going got a little rough. Now the IS, this is the only lens I own that has IS. Canon claims something like four stops slower handholds than you can usually achieve, I think this claim is fairly accurate at 250mm. If you follow the One over the focal length ...
