A camera that fulfilled my expectations

A beautifully designed camera with many advanced features. Works great, solidly made, easy to use. Very pleased I bought it. Major quibble: lag time. Not terrible, but not great either. Other common complaints (no RAW, no tilting screen, inaccurate optical finder) don't bother me too much. This is not a perfect camera, but it's very, very good. The face recognition feature is awesome. Had to get some shots in a hurry with no second chance and the camera did not fail me. Professional results from an advanced point-and-shoot camera.

Great Camera for vloging. Definitely recommend it to anyone. when holding the camera you can tell that the camera is built to high quality. This was purchase for my girlfriend who vlogs. she absolutely loves it as you can turn the screen either way.

Not many cons, really. The optical IS is amazingly effective, letting you work in lower light levels without a flash - even pictures shot at 1/8 second came out looking good. Face recognition works extremely well, but only when the faces are looking right at you. If a subject turns his head, then the camera loses that face. The breadth of features and level of control on this camera is equal to any high-end SLR's. It can be fully automatic, fully manual or a variety of degrees in between. cedarrapidsboy wrote in his review that there is "No DC-in". Actually, there is an AC adapter available separately. It connects directly to the battery compartment (this feature is one of the things that helps keep the camera compact - no real estate wasted on a DC-in socket). ... MoreNot many cons, really. Great Camera
31 December 2006

I got this camera because I got tired of dragging out lenses and gear for my DSLR every time I wanted a pic. If you get this camera I would suggest getting a backup battery to keep on the charger. This need is compounded by the lack of a good battery meeter on this model which only tells you when you are almost out of juice. As mentioned, the grip is a bit small and a bit slick (except for the very small vertical grip bar). The pictures are clear and sharp and the face recognition is nice to. The macro shots are OUTSTANDING and worth the price of the camera alone if you consider what a good macro lens will cost you. Overall I am extremely happy with my choice.

I have had several of the Canon G7 cameras. They take great pictures and easy to carry. I got this one for my granddaughter as her first camera.

Great camera

Also available in my country. Tried it out first. Liked the features and trademark. I needed it to take family and holiday pictures - the 10MP and 6x optical zoom were great for me. Option to buy other lenses. Good size to slip in handbag (but gets slightly bulky with soft case). Li-ion battery. Would have liked to have the possibility of checking the battery level. Have not experimented much yet but everyone was impressed with the photos I took. Very sharp, even when taken on an evening outside.

The best Point-n-Shoot for the Pros
18 October 2010

I've used countless cameras in my lifetime, and my primary photography setup is with a Canon 50D DSLR. I needed something smaller as a casual carry-around camera to be paired with my existing beast. After researching extensively for about a month, I finally decided to purchase the Canon PowerShot G7, as it seemed to fit my needs perfectly in terms of price vs performance vs feature set. For the casual shooter, this camera may be a little bit too much for them, but for those accustomed to working with DSLRs, then this camera will be the perfect match, at least it was for me. For the casual shooter, this camera may be a little bit too much for them, but for those accustomed to working with DSLRs, then this camera will be the perfect match, at least it was for me. CONS: * Lack of ability to shoot RAW images by default (even though other G series cameras have this feature) * Spot Focus selection is tedious, and resets itself back to center * The use of SD cards instead of CF cards if you're trying to pair this with a DSLR (such as the 350D which uses the same batteries as the G7) * 4-way cross pad is hard to press with larger fingers * No tethered capturing support via Adobe Lightroom * Have to unmount from tripod to open the door to access battery and SD card compartments PROS: * ISO is an actual dial instead of a button or menu option * C1/C2 programmable custom modes, like on the Canon 40D/50D and 5D Mark II * Body is metal instead of plastic (heavier, but much stronger feeling) * The hot shoe! This enables mounted flashes or external flashes with a wireless trigger * Uses the same rechargeable batteries as the Canon 350D (Digital Rebel XT) * Probably the best image quality of any P&S camera from its era Other Thoughts: The camera can be upgraded with the open-source firmware add-on called CHDK. This add-on extends the camera's default abilities to have features such as saving 10-bit RAW images, shooting longer videos, full-color live histogram, better battery meter displays, and much much more. Using the custom CHDK firmware add-on is not a replacement firmware, so there is none of this worry of "doing it wrong" and breaking your camera when using it. If you need a small side camera to go along with your professional gear like I did, then the Canon G series is perfect for you! All of your existing lighting equipment will be supported on the Canon G7 due to its hot shoe, which was one of my greatest loves of this camera. The need to make an investment into SD cards on top of my existing investment in CF cards was a bit of a turn off, however.

It does not have intervalomer,It does not have swivel screen. If you loved the G3 you will be not as happy with the G7 .less features after many years, equally expensive than 4 years ago. The quality is very good! It has an amazing zoom. Macro works well and fast. The camara has a nice big sceen and when using manual it makes life easier for exposure, with a detailed ruler of time and aperture. It has a very nice size, although i am not a big fan of the material used for the grip, it feels cheap with the overall of the camera.
