A really excellent lens

As a paid member of Canon Professional Services, I was able to borrow both the RF 24-70 f/2.8 and the RF 24-105 f/4 lenses for evaluation on my R5. I really wanted to like the 24-105. It was lighter, less expensive and used the same 77mm filters I already had. I shot in manual switching between the lenses with a variety of subjects at 24mm, 40mm, 70mm and 105mm using f/2.8, f/4, f/8 and f/16. The 24-105 is a fine lens and perhaps I would have been happy with it but in every shot, the RF 24-70 provided superior results. Makes sense at twice the cost that it would be twice the lens. Capture One Pro 15 has a lens profile for both lenses.

Wish all of the RF lenses were designed with the focus, zoom ring and control all in the same spots. Come on Canon, WTF- a lot of photographers are OCD with that stuff. The zoom ring is bi-leveled which was weird at first, but don't mind it after getting used to it. And the zoom is a bigger turn than I'm used to.Overall, it's faster, sharper, cleaner than the EF. But... is it worth the upgrade from the EF?? well, I have another camera which I'm happy to put the EF on, 1DX III, So I don't mind having two of the essentially same lens - but I'd say the upgrade isn't big enough to justify it if it wasn't my main and favorite lens.I'm happy I have it though. Excited to work with it more!

Great Lens. However, it's an unnecessary upgrade, IMO.

It's very easy for the switches to click on/off. I primarily photograph weddings and I have to turn the IS switch back on about 20 times throughout any given wedding, which is SUPER frustrating, considering I purchased the lens for it's Image Stabilization.I'm still pretty happy with my EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II (which works perfectly with the R6). Insanely powerful camera for both
2 November 2022

Insanely powerful camera for both the MSRP and rental price. I was blown away by the video (I'm a C300mkiii user 95% of the time) After previously owning 5DmkIV's and a 1DXmkii, the R5 blows both of them out of the water as a small run and gun rig.I heard rumors about overheating, but our team didn't experience that at all. Even after the R5 being put through it's paces recording long clipsOnly thing that one of our guys complained about was switching modes. The Canon cinema line and DSLR's do have better button layouts and slightly better menus. That's the only minor thing , but to be honest, it doesn't even matter with how well this thing performs.

It's a standard for a reason.
2 September 2022

It's a standard for a reason. Not as bokelicious as the 28-70, but better close focus, stabilized, which is great for video, reasonable filter size, very sharp, and still decent bokeh. Also the extra 4mm on the wide end is significant. My wife photographs as well, and even though I own the 28-70, we own two of these 24-70's because of their versatility. That should say something. Only minus is price, but if you are looking at this, you should be making money with it, and that's made back with a lens that does the job. Recommended.

Spicy price but is so nice
6 July 2022

The speed of the RF focus system lenses to bodies is awesome. The sharpness and quality of the lenses are amazing but the price is eye watering. If you do professional work and will make the money back. I can highly recommend this. If you do professional work but don't have the money to throw around quite yet on lenses. Go for a Sigma 24-70 2.8 + the Canon EF-RF adapter. You cannot go wrong with that combo. Especially if you use the Canon EF-RF with the drop in filter adapter!Otherwise this is an amazing lens.

Superb lens for newer stabilized Canon RF bodies
20 January 2023

With my Canon R5, I compared photos taken with the new RF 24-70 2.8 L to the EF 24-70 2.8 L II lens. With the R5 the difference in these lenses is quite small. The in body R5 stabilization is excellent with the older EF lens and for me the RF lens based stabilization did not support slower hand held shutter speeds. This may be different for you. Both lenses were very sharp and comparable in the corners. The RF lens does allow you to get a bit closer to the subject, but for me this is not that important. If you are using a non stabilized RF body ( original R or RP ) I would recommended buying the new RF lens as the built in stabilization is very handy. Both the EF and RF lenses are impressively good. In closing, if you have a stabilized body and own the EF 2.8 24-70mm II lens, I would find it hard to justify an upgrade.

The perfect canon lens but....
8 December 2022

The star attraction to this L series (Luxury) Canon lens is photo detail clarity which is amazing! This 24-70mm is an EF lens series meant for full frame bodies. I am using it on a cropped frame Canon EFS series so that gives me an effective 38-112mm lens which works great. The automatic focus is fast and nimble, and the barrel action is tight giving testimony to high quality seals. The deal breaker for some is the lack of IS or image stabilization. If you have shaky hands, consider a different lens with the IS feature. It may also be a good lens for fast action shots using a higher ISO and shutter speed. I only use this lens on a tripod to photograph artifacts and for that purpose, I could not find a better lens. I primarily shoot events and weddings. I have been on the RF mount system for nearly 3 years and mostly with adapted lenses. I have been shooting with wide open primes most of my photo life. Why? Because we are told this is how you get the best results. Hence I have always gotten great results that way. This Canon RF 24-70mm challenges that thinking. It's Stabilized. 2.8 is decently fast. Supreme build quality. Sniper-like autofocus on the R6.This produces images as sharp and at times sharper than my primes. It's a cheat code for shooting fast moving events and occasions. I have used other 24-70mm standard zooms. To my eye this is a step better. Yes it is expensive. For my workflow using one lens for 80% of the day is worth it. Worth the money
22 November 2022

I've been shooting on a t6i for the past 6 years or so. I recently upgraded to an R6 with this lens. I didn't have the budget to buy a bunch of different prime lenses, and needed to get one good lens to start me off. I picked this one and don't regret my decision at all! I currently shoot a lot of automotive photography but I eventually want to get into wedding photography. The photos are sharp! IS Works great. The only thing is the lens doesn't fit in my old camera bag, so I have to buy a bigger bag now. You can't go wrong with this lens.
