Focus quickly and quietly for sharp shots and clear audio The RF 24mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM’s quiet STM (Stepping Motor) locks onto your subject and focuses quickly, even when shooting fast-moving subjects. Get close-up, and show the whole scene A minimum focusing distance of 14cm (0.5x magnification or half life-size) is a real advantage for creative wide-angle and lets you get extra close, showing your subject within its environment. Intuitive control at your fingertips The RF 24mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM has a customisable Lens Control Ring that allows fine tuning of ISO, aperture or changing AF method as well as a dedicated focus ring for precise manual focusing.

I picked up this lens to replace my EF 24mm f/2.8 (gradually going from EF to RF lenses). Comparing them side by side on my R6 for the same scene, they are optically very close, which is to say very good. The EF lens is very sharp of course across the fame, down to the corners. Comparing them at f/2.8, the same is true for the RF lens. At f/1.8, the corners are slightly soft, but I'm not planning to put my subject in the corner when shooting at f/1.8. The center and mid portions of the frame are very sharp side open, so this lens will work well for environmental portraits and such. And for landscapes, I stop down anyway. I own the EF 24mm f/1.4 II and was looking for a fast similar lens for my R5's. This really fit nicely into my travel pack. While it is not an L lens the price is great. The difference between f/1.4 and f/1.8 in my opinion is negligible and the weight difference is about 50% of that of the EF lens. This is a sharp fast lens.

Great street photography lens
11 January 2023

The 24mm ficak length has long been a favorite, whether Nikon, Leica or in this case Canon. The EF 24mm L USM is a fantastic lens for which the RF 24mm f/1.8 is our only mirrorless option. Although not an L the RF holds its own as a tack sharp super fast street lens. Plenty of foreground. Great story telling potential. I only wish there was an RF L version which I hear may be in the works for late 2023. As of now this RF 24mmwill have to do. Did I mention it's an IS! Indeed an image stabilized 24mm with a superfastf/1.8 speed is not just the only option in town but a very GOOD option for the mirrorless line. At $600 it's well worth it till the L shows up later this year.

My favorite focal length
31 August 2022

Of course, I'm referring to the equivalent focal length on my new Canon R7 body, which is 38.4 mm because it has an APS-C size sensor. An ideal general purpose focal length. Sharp and Fast, and a very good match to the properties of the R7.

Nice Astro and low light lens
30 October 2022

My first foray into astrophotography went surprisingly well. Paired with an R6 body, I had very good results. It's also very handy in dark interiors when flash can't be used. Light weight and small size make if easy to stash in a corner of your camera bag. Love that it can be switched to manual focus without going into the camera menu. Lots to love here!

RF lenses are pretty great
30 January 2023

I'm actually really impressed with the RF line of non-professional lenses. I've purchased a few of them now (16mm, 24mm, 35mm and 50mm). I'm impressed with the 24mm and 35mm that they offer macro and in-lens stabilization. These are small and light weight but well built and feel solid. My plan is to use them mainly for gimbal work, video and hiking and backpacking. I'm somewhat tempted to bring them to a wedding reception- especially the 16mm and 24mm for fun dance floor photos.

Shallow DOF and Macro too!
23 November 2022

On my Canon R7 this lens performs excellent. Bokeh is quite nice at 1.8. Macro gets down to 1:2 which is perfect for everything except maybe small insects. Super light making my R7 a great walk around camera.

So far so good
7 October 2022

I like this lens. Build quality is the same as the 35mm. Its priced higher for some reason but i do like this focal length. Images shot from my EOS RP in 1.8. Images look sharp despite me being an enthusiast at best. Happy with my purchase. Its extremely lightweight which is why i wanted this lens. Is it the same quality as an L series lens? No but for my level of experience it works just fine.

Surprisingly nice
23 November 2022

I'm used to non-L Canon lens coming with some serious trade-offs, but this one is really great, about the same league as 50/1.8. It's sharp, it's remarkably lightweight and compact, it focuses reasonably quickly, and while it's not a real macro, it lets you get pretty close.
