Expensive for what it is and can do.

Bare-bones lens for $1200 does some ok things at 2.8, but not as sexy as the previous 3 models for the EOS system with an adapter. Quicker autofocus, yes. Lighter, yes. Good all-around results, so overall, pretty nice shots, but does not have pro feel. I’d wait for the off-brands to put out their models on the RF system.

Used L-series lenses on my new EOS R for many months with a 24-105mm lens used the most. This new 28-70mm makes my unit significantly lighter & from what I can tell, this is as sharp or sharper that my previous one...typical of Canon lenses. Looking forward for a lot more use soon.

I've been a hobbyist for many years. I have both the L version and now been a week of using this lens. Cant really tell much of a diff so far. This lens is really compact and light for my travel coming soon. I'll review this lens further after the trip.
For this crazy price, you're better off getting a used (like new) EF L lens like the Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8 II L. Whoever gave the green light to price this at over $1K should be fired.
This lens bridges the gap between entry level and kit lenses, to the high dollar L series or professional series lens. My only drawback to this particular lens, is that it retracts to a store position and you have to extend it to the 28mm focal length to shoot with. Also wish it was a touch wider closer to the 20mm length, but beggars can't be choosers.
This camera is very compact and light compare to 24-70 F2.8 IS L USM. Randomly picture gets extemly dark and it doesnt happen with other lens on the same setting. Overall good but needs time for Canon to figure out glitch.
I purchased primarily for family events but was impressed with performance indoors and also with build quality (no wobbling of lens tube, smooth zoom and focus speed). However my copy was decentered with noticeably blurry edges on the left side at F2.8 when focused at infinity from around 35mm through 70mm. 28mm was ok and all focal lengths were good at f4. Surprising wide open performance as I own several other rf lenses and all are well centered. I suspect that most other copies will be ok but I would advise checking your copy carefully. I returned mine. Grateful for the very generous and smooth return process at B&H.
Great lens. The bokeh is enough for a beginning photographer. Wide enough for most shots and zoomed enough for all shots!
This is a nice short telephoto for people, landscapes and even astrophotography. Image quality is good considering the price and that it is not an L lens. It is surprisingly light when paired with my R6mkII. Shooting HD (1920x1080) video is great, and with digital zoom I can get extra reach to over 100mm effective focal length with high image quality. I often forget to twist the lens to the 28mm position from fully closed, but that's a minor annoyance.
