Best litter my cat has used!

I have a very finicky cat who shows his displeasure by using the floor nearby instead of his litter tray. So when Oz Pet was unavailable a few months ago I was forced to find a substitute. I chose Catmate because it resembled the litter my cat used. I fully expected him to refuse to use the tray but he accepted it and has not once used the floor since. I find the smell non-offensive , it's easy to clean the tray and lasts well. The 15kg bag is too heavy for me to lift but my husband kindly takes care of that. I won't complain about the size because it works out fairly economical and it may not for a smaller bag.

When there absolute favourite litter suddenly wasn’t made & was replaced by a ‘new improved’ version it was a total failure. The new one disintegrates and they track it everywhere and most of all they hated it! I tried many others and this is the best I’ve found as a replacement. It’s very similar to their old favourite and my two have accepted it, like it and there’s no mess with Catmate. Such a relief to find it. It’s not quite as good as the old one but very close!! This is our favourite!

Disgusting, overwhelming chemical odour.

Last time I bought CatMate, 2-3 years ago, it was very pleasant to use. I used it for several years with great success. This time the CHEMICAL smell is SOOOO BAD I was overwhelmed and struggled to breath. I couldnt leave it in the house. It even stunk out my open back verandah as well. Of course the cats are not going to go near it and I cannot possibly have it in the house anyway. The 1 star is for delivery. I want my money back.

Game changer
31 October 2022

I'm gonna write the review I wish i had seen about this before buying it. This litter absolutely changed my life and is easily the best thing out there. I'm mad that I didn't try it out sooner. To explain how it works: the wood is shaped in big smooth pellets. When they absorb moisture, they disintegrate into tiny sawdust pieces. Because of this, it's flushable in small quantities. I bought the catmate sifting tray as well and it is absolutely essential. All you need to do is shake the tray and the clean litter stays at the top while the used sawdust sifts to the bottom. Here's an honest review -Pros:- Smells woody! I love this smell. It smells so fresh. Not a sickening or artificial smell.- Covers the cat pee smell 100%. I live in a small apartment with a stinker of a cat so this is incredible. Cat poop smell is in my con's list below.- My cat is a kicker. With every single other litter I've used, half of it ends up on the floor around the litter box and I can't buy a bigger litter box because my cat has three legs and can't climb into it. These pellets are big and I only find the occasional one or two lying around- Not messy. I thought the soggy sawdust particles would cause disgusting havoc, but the sawdust looks and feels dry even when it's used- Cost effective. when i tell you the 15kg bag will last, i mean it. One of these has already lasted me longer than 2 of the 23 litre recycled paper litters. plus, you really don't have to change it that frequently. Just shake down the used sawdust (takes about 15 seconds to do it fully) i to the sifting tray and you're good to go- Cat took to it right away. I have a picky cat and he used it immediately.Cons:- the 15kg bag is heavy (this was obvious to everyone except me when i was trying to drag it to my apartment)- it doesn't 100% cover poop smell, but it's still a lot better than everything else I've used. I'd say it covers poop smell 75% because of the fresh wood smell. But I've learned to sprinkle with a bit of cat litter deodoriser and have a fragrance diffuser nearby and this helps.- Can be annoying to clean if you spill the used sawdust. During a deep clean, I spilled some of the used sawdust, and because it feels dry it doesn't have any hold to it. Had to get the vacuum out, but it was an easy fix and a fast lesson.I've had many cats and have tried many different litters, and was at my wits end contemplating whether or not i could keep my cat. This litter is a game changer and I could not be more impressed. Love this stuff.

Good Eco Option - Not so great overall
20 April 2023

I bought this because it was cheap and you can just chuck it in the green bin instead of putting it to landfill. I'm finding that it does indeed just turn to sawdust when urinated on - but it traps that odour very well and just smells like sawdust. You do need litter track mats to grab onto those little sawdust pieces - otherwise it does track pretty badly. But with my mats, it doesn't go further than that. The pieces are very large and don't go through a regular scooper, so this litter would ideally go in one of those sifter boxes, where you could sift out all the sawdust and leave the pellets.I haven't decided if I'm going to order this litter again, but it's okay so far.

Love this litter
17 September 2022

the pellets are a little big so the cats weren't sure at first, you also may be throwing away a few pellets when scooping poos as they won't fall through the scoop. i have tried crystals, standard litter, recycled paper, activated charcoal, clumping litter, crystals were always my favourite for the odour but can be pretty expensive and they don't come in big bags but this is by far my favourite. 10/10 for the pee smell you can?t smell a thing and the pellets turning to dust is a bonus because it gives them more to dig other than pellets. it isn't as great at masking the poo smell when i go scoop it in the morning but i find all litter to be that way anyway and it may just be harder for them to cover up with the pellets. definitely my favourite litter by a mile and ... Morethe pellets are a little big so the cats weren't sure at first, you also may be throwing away a few pellets when scooping poos as they won't fall through the scoop. i have tried crystals, standard litter, recycled paper, activated charcoal, clumping litter, crystals were always my favourite for the odour but can be pretty expensive and they don't come in big bags but this is by far my favourite. 10/10 for the pee smell you can?t smell a thing and the pellets turning to dust is a bonus because it gives them more to dig other than pellets. it isn't as great at masking the poo smell when i go scoop it in the morning but i find all litter to be that way anyway and it may just be harder for them to cover up with the pellets. definitely my favourite litter by a mile and so sutainable!

My cats hated this, and I don't blame them
18 April 2023

These pellets are big and hard - a few cm long, around 1cm in diameter, and they have sharpish so edges. Yes, they break down with urine, but first you need the cats to stand on them. My guys wouldn't. They seemed very uncomfortable, and unsure when the pellets moved and they sank. I even upped their old litter to about 90% with some of these through it and they avoided them. I was expecting something totally different to this as the pellet type just makes no sense. If your cats use it kudos to them, but we are staying away.

Stands out overall
22 March 2023

I've tried a number of types of cat litters. This one so far is the best overall. It's more economical than Tofu and clay litter, less odour, more absorbent and convenient than recycled paper litter. It makes no dust and less mess than any other litters. My cats and I also liked Tofu litter as it clumps, flushable and gentle on paws but it's more expensive. The small bag doesn't last long at all. This wood pallet last quite long. I'm very happy with it overall.

Tried the rest ... staying with the best.

We have two young indoor cats and have tried all sorts of litter but they have all fallen short for one reason or another. Recycled paper was not good at odour absorption, was not very good as garden mulch and had to be replaced often in the litter trays.Clumping and non-clumping clays had little odour absorbtion, had to be replaced often and were useless as garden mulch and the wet clay always stuck to the bottom of the tray.Crystals had great odour and liquid absorption but were expensive and useless as garden mulch. We were very pleasantly surprised by the odour and liquid absorption properties of the Catmate recycled timber pellets, the way they breakdown when wet (though they never appear soggy) and can easily be separated from the clean pellets using sifting ... MoreWe have two young indoor cats and have tried all sorts of litter but they have all fallen short for one reason or another. They have good longevity in the litter trays and make excellent garden mulch once they are finished with. With other types of litter, once a portion of the material was used, we had to throw it all out and start again. With the Catmate pellets, it is just a matter of replenishing the material which has broken down and been sifted out.We are very impressed with this product. It is: cost effective; long lasting; easy to use; is a sustainable product which can be re-recycled as mulch; virtually no tracking (if broken down material is sifted out); and possibly best of all we don't need to use deodourisers any more around the litter trays.

Wood Pellets are the best cat litter
7 August 2022

This litter is a complete game changer. I am mad I didn't know about it 20 years ago. Forget clay, paper, tofu, and crystals, wood pellets are the answer.Pros:1. The litter pellets are significantly larger than average, meaning they don't get stuck in paws, and they don't easily flick out of the tray and track through the house.2. Absorption is FAST any pellets that are soaked in urine quickly absorb the urine and turn to sawdust.3. Daily maintenance is easy, with a couple of shakes the sawdust[urine] is quickly moved to the bottom tray. Scoop poop as per usual.4. No smell!! None! Just a very subtle natural pine scent. It's truly mind-blowing.5. My cat prefers it. I offered a tray of clay litter alongside the new pellets for a day, but she immediately ... MoreThis litter is a complete game changer. If used with a sifter tray, you can go longer between complete tray changes and use less litter overall. The lower tray of soiled litter can be removed and emptied, whilst keeping the upper tray full.7. No dust, I was worried the daily shaking would make a mess and I'd be inhaling urine-soaked dust, not the case. Phew!Bonus: It's environmentally friendly!Cons:1. For best results, you will need a litter tray with a sifter.
