The CineStill Film 400Dynamic Color Negative Film (120 film size) is a fine grain film that delivers a soft color palette with natural saturated color and rich, warm skin tones. The film has a wide dynamic range, with a base sensitivity of ISO 400 but can be rated from 200 to 800, and it can be pushed up to 3200. This makes the film highly versatile, suitable for any lighting condition, any event, and can be used either outdoors or in the studio. 400D was specifically designed for still photography, to be processed in C-41 chemistry by any photo lab or at home. In addition, it also features a process-surviving anti-static lubricant coating that will make it an ideal film for both manual SLRs and automatic winding cameras. This new film will continue CineStill’s ongoing tradition of motion picture film emulsions made for still photographers, so that they can maximize their creativity and produce remarkable images that express who they are as a photographer. ISO 400 daylight balanced 120 colour negative film Safe for C-41 processing at photo labs Process-surviving anti-static lubricant coating Factory spooled, 36 exposure DX-coded cassettes Wide exposure latitude Can be push-processed up to 3 stops Halation can occur at in-focus, overexposed highlights Images shot by Michael Thomas (@mthomdotcom) on Cinestill 400D 120 / Mamiya 7 and scanned with Noritsu HS-1800.

A new film from Cinestill that feels very different

I've shot a lot of Cinestill 800T and 50D, so I was excited to try their new 400D offering, which could fill the gap between the two very different speeds and styles of the existing formats. I shot this roll in a mixture of indoor, outdoor, daylight and night-time settings and and was very surprised by the saturation and contrast I was able to achieve. To my eyes the results are very dramatic, with strong/bold colours that are similar to Fuji Velvia, and equally strong contrast. I probably wouldn't recommend this film for general holiday snaps or quaint countryside landscapes, but I already love it for portraits and urban scenes. It's unmistakably Cinestill - the red halation effect is still there, but it's definitely amped up in a way that makes photos really ... MoreI've shot a lot of Cinestill 800T and 50D, so I was excited to try their new 400D offering, which could fill the gap between the two very different speeds and styles of the existing formats. Really good film for shooting cinematic looking shots as it still has the cinestill halation effect on highlights as well as the Vision3 film look.

This film produces very natural colors, slightly muted tones, & had a very fine grain. A great film for any category.

Excellent for wet landscapes
31 March 2023

These were taken on a wet day in the Yorkshire Dales. Cinestill 400D has wonderful range and is one of the most versatile films I've used. In 35mm for example I've used at 800 iso for gigs with no loss of quality. I think it comes into its own for moody skies and seems well suited for wet UK landscapes.

Great Vibrancy, Beautiful Colours
12 January 2023

I was initially worried that shooting Cinestill 400D in the daylight might produce too much halation or too many colour casts that it would look like a novelty stock. However, it was quite the contrast. The halation in the highlights were subtle where they appeared, but the cinematic charm of Cinestill wasn't lost on the tones. The vibrancy was perfect for my use and I also found that the colours and skin tones were rendered with great accuracy.

I love this film stock.
19 May 2023

I love this film stock. I mainly shoot Portra for my portfolio work but Cinestill 400D has found its way into my workflow. I love the look of this film in harsh/midday light. I don't usually shoot in midday light but I have been pleased with the results of this film during those lighting situations. This film stock is also versatile and looks great over exposed!!

Nice
8 July 2023

Got some nice results, but a bit expensive for me as I haven't figured out how to use the camera yet!! I would think this would be very good for doing close portraits.

I liked the contrast and saturation. Shadow recovery is good and I can live with the slight halation.
