I absolutely LOVE this product! My hair came out EXACTLY as I wanted and expected it to. 100% spot-on what I was going for. I hope the awesome metallic shine is obvious in the pictures. There was no smell, before during or after, and it washed right off my skin, ears, neck, etc. Notes: If you wear glasses, memorize the instructions and preset your timer or use a sand timer to determine when the 20 minutes processing time is up. Also, it took a SUPER SUPER long time to rinse out all of the coloring stuff, even under my high-pressure kitchen sink faucet—unexpectedly long time. Oh: I used my own gloves, so I don’t know how good the ones are that come with this product. Next time, I’d recommend having a friend help with this—who can see/wear glasses. So happy with this! ... MoreI absolutely LOVE this product! My hair came out EXACTLY as I wanted and expected it to. 100% spot-on what I was going for. Really impressed with this. I bought 7 Dark Blonde after a particularly bad 'balayage' job (mostly awful white/yellow highlights) and the colour has come out exactly as it's shown on the box. I still had my natural light brown roots and this has blended really well after being on for 20 minutes. It's obviously not the colour I wanted when I set out trying to be lighter with the initial balayage attempt, but it has rescued my hair from that disaster, and at least I can leave the house again without a hat! It's in no way very dark, and as it's a semi dye it will fade and the lighter colours will come through again a bit more in time. If you're despairing about a terrible blonde dye job and want to get back to a dark blonde/lighter brown then this is for you. I did ... MoreReally impressed with this. I did use a purple shampoo on my hair a few days before I used the dye, although I'm not sure how much difference it made to this outcome. This dye seems to have redder tones to it after application which might freak you out initially, but it settles and blends. It does give good coverage, and the blonde comes through with subtle tones, so don't use it if you want to still be mainly a light blonde colour, you will most likely be the colour on the box. If you're looking for something to just tone down yellow brassiness then I don't think this will be for you, as I think it will initially cover your blonde. As ever, it's good to do a patch test if you're not sure you'll like the final results.

I have been using this brand haircolor for years, trying different shades. I recently went through chemo therapy and lost all my hair. Since it’s grown back in its come in with a lot of grey. I have naturally medium brown hair. It is in excellent condition and thought I would color it with this new formula. So many reviews state the new formula is not as good as the old, I love the new formula. No burning on application, no hot roots, more even coverage. Many reviews also stated that the sheets are much darker than reflected on the box. For this reason I purchased suede light brown. It is so dark! Thankfully I don’t mind dark hair on myself. This is the only negative. My hair feels so soft and fluffy. And it was great at covering my greys! Pros: Does not seem to damage hair or cause hair shedding! Huge! Cons: Lightens natural color slightly. Brassy! 5g mostly but not fully covered gray. TBD: How long the gray coverage lasts. Decided to try this to blend the gray at my roots. I have prob ~20% gray (among my natural brown-black) that I like to tint light/med brown as a way of adding highlights to my hair. Typically use a beauty store brand demi permanent color with 10 volume developer and that works great - it actually permanently stains my gray so that I only have to to recolor my roots every 4-6 weeks, and my lengths never look over-saturated. However it consistently makes my hair fall out like CRAZY whenever I use it so decided to try Natural Instincts 5g in looking for an alternative. However it consistently makes my hair fall out like CRAZY whenever I use it so decided to try Natural Instincts 5g in looking for an alternative. I used this only on a couple inches of my roots on virgin hair - it was quick to apply since it wasn't to thick and didnt cause ANY additional hair loss or scalp irritation, yay! BUT, I'm not liking the result. It gave me hot roots - the dark hair at my roots is now lighter than the dark hair that wasn't colored. That should never be the case with a demi perm color. Instead of having tinted gray, the result is muddy, and not a color I like either - the 5 "golden brown" is a bit too green for my pref. It only very slightly lightened my natural dark color, but I didn't want it lightened at all esp considering I only do my roots. The hunt for an alternative continues. If I ever tried this again I would try a redder or cooler brown vs golden (though I like golden in other brands) and perhaps go darker in hopes the gray would fade to a lighter color adter a few washed and my natural dark wouldn't be affected.
My hair is naturally a medium brown, but I prefer it darker. Unfortunately, even permanent color fades after about a month of washing, so I figured this would be a gentler alternative. I will say it smells much better than other dyes I've used. It has a pleasant fruity-floral aroma. If you're sensitive to scent, be aware that this scent lingers on your hair after rinsing. I bought shade 3 Ebony Mocha Brown Black, which I don't see here, but it's the shade just before soft black. It does the job. This color had red undertones on me, so keep that in mind. Indoors it appears almost black, but in natural sunlight you can see it's brown. However, that could just be how it came out on me based on the color I started with. My hair feels a little bit dry, but not terrible. ... MoreMy hair is naturally a medium brown, but I prefer it darker. Overall, it's not the best dye I've ever used, but if you're looking for a non permanent option and don't want to lighten your hair, I'd say go for it.
I am a very "young" 73! Ever since I reached my mid-30's I've used two well-known brands of permanent hair-colour in shades of browns from golden to dark, without any problems whatsoever. However on my last two sessions of needing to cover the in-coming grey roots and to brighten up my whole hair on both occasions I experienced the most strong stinging sensation within seconds of application. It didn't wear off until a good couple of hours after rinsing the dye off.Happily there were no further detrimental effects but nonetheless it then made me rather afraid of doing my hair again but so dismayed at the thought of having to accept the idea of letting my hair go grey, the very last thing I want!I searched for reasons why I might be getting the stinging and ... MoreI am a very "young" 73! I used to color my hair with Clairol Natural Instincts about 10 years ago and never had an issue. With a special event coming up I decided to freshen my hair up with some color. Upon reading the instructions it seemed as if the product had improved since I last used it. I bought two packages, but one bottle covered my shoulder-length hair just fine. However, after applying and rinsing out the product as instructed, I noticed that my hair didn't feel very good. Back in the day it used to leave my hair super silky and soft, like a model in a shampoo commercial. But the real horror happened after I dried my hair and realized that the color I got was NOT the color on the box! I selected #4 dark brown to get a Hersheys dark chocolate color. But the real horror happened after I dried my hair and realized that the color I got was NOT the color on the box! I selected #4 dark brown to get a Hersheys dark chocolate color. Instead my hair came out looking like kona coffee grounds in water (aka, almost black). It looks completely unnatural and now I'm trying to desperately get it to wash out early. (In the shower for the first wash since coloring, my hair felt like even more of a bird's nest than when I rinsed the dye out. Bleh!) I have now sworn off hair dye for the rest of my life. Hopefully by the time I get to the special event this weekend some of it will have washed out.
I have naturally almost black hair and tried to have some dark brown highlights put in, something subtle just to lighten it up a bit. They turned out to be brassy red-orange. The stylist toned the highlights and they looked better at first but it washed right out. So I used the 6A light cool brown to tone them again and I was hoping to tone but not completely cover them so they would still be visible but more of a dark brown vs orange. I put it on for the full 20 minutes and it turned out perfectly. It’s hard to see in the photo but in person you can see the highlights, they just look more natural now. I don’t know if it will completely wash out eventually or not but I’m glad I found something that worked. I recommend if you’re doing something similar to go lighter ... MoreI have naturally almost black hair and tried to have some dark brown highlights put in, something subtle just to lighten it up a bit. I recommend if you’re doing something similar to go lighter than your intended result because cool/ash tones do cancel out brassiness but they tend to also come out darker than the warmer or neutral colors do. I was hoping to have level 4 or 5 brown highlights so I used 6 ash and it turned out perfect. So for under $10 it’s worth a shot
This is beautiful hair dye! I haven't dyed my hair/had it highlighted for 2 years, since I had my baby, and I wanted to do something new but wasn't wanting to spend $200 anymore to get my hair highlighted and lowlighted. I was hesitant with this dye because some reviews said it didn't cover their old dye, or bleached ends, that they turned green, etc. But I decided to try it considering it's demi-permanent dye! I absolutely love it! I had bleached and toned highlights that had grown out for 2 years at the bottom 6 inches of length on my hair. I used the 6N light natural Suede Brown color. I used a red tinted shampoo just on my ends to "fill" the hair before the coloring to hopefully negate any green tones that could come out of the old bleach. I used a red tinted shampoo just on my ends to "fill" the hair before the coloring to hopefully negate any green tones that could come out of the old bleach. It has a beautiful rich tone and isn't 1 dimensional. I still have some nice golden tones and highlights in my hair and it blended my bleached bottom highlights beautifully. I love it! The smell isn't bad or overwhelming. The included conditioner is nice and my hair is soft! I personally think this is a wonderful substitute to going to the salon, and I had no issues with the dye, application or results! The only thing I would say, is I could have done with 2 boxes over just 1. My hair is VERY thick, naturally curly and long! So to be on the safe side I would buy 2 boxes, I will next time! I also would section your hair and apply instead of just covering the head for a better saturation and to make sure you get an even and non-patchy result! I love it!
This worked really well for me! I have medium brown hair with dark blond balayage that had gotten really brassy and I was sick of trying to keep it toned. I applied 5A (medium cool brown) to the bleached ends and 4 (dark brown) to my natural roots and ended up with a really natural-looking dark brown that still has a little bit of dimension on the ends. I also have a few grays and it covered those fully. My hair is extremely thick, and 2 bottles saturated it fully at this length. (I applied it to dry unwashed hair per package directions.) The before and after pics were a few days before and about a week after…I tried to get similar lighting but the “after” does look a bit darker in person. In that time, I’ve fully shampooed it twice (sulfate-free), applied a little bit of shampoo around my hairline 2 or 3 more times, and wet/conditioned it daily. It has faded a little (as expected) but nothing crazy, like it doesn’t just wash out right away or anything. It did not dry my hair out and my waves have actually looked really nice every day since I’ve used it. It irritated my scalp a little bit, but I have very sensitive skin so that’s to be expected, and it’s definitely not among the worst offenders out of the dyes I’ve used, like it didn’t break me out elsewhere on my face/body and it didn’t smell notably bad either. I will absolutely repurchase this and I may try a dark cool blonde on the ends next time to see how that looks.
