(1,973 reviews)

The Nitro Blade is a robust high performance coffee hand grinder with advanced burr design. The grinder offers wide range of adjustments, stable operation and refined design with top-quality materials. The MK4 is the new version which has several updates: New engine frame shape and material More robust, with larger capacity and no more trapped beans Each grinder comes with two jars - brown glass and clear polymer-glass Reworked packaging with improved protection The burr design is a result of dedicated research and development at Comandante’s onsite coffee lab. It is made of high-alloyed, high-nitrogen stainless steel with a fine martensitic micro-crystal matrix. The material is difficult to work with but when finished, it is tough and has a high degree of edge retention. Also the body, axle, crank and micro ball bearings are made from stainless steel. Comandante click system gives you full control for any brewing method and locks your preferred grind setting into place, helping you get the very best out of your roasted coffee and repeat the same results. Each grinder comes with one brown glass and one clear polymer-glass bean jar. Both are easy to clean and hold around 40 g of roasted coffee beans. Weighing in at just over 600 g, the C40’s compact size means that whether you’re at home or off on an adventure, this grinder is your loyal companion.

It operates better than any other hand grinder I have previously owned, and the ability to change grind settings, or even simply to clean the device, is quickly and easily learned. Unlike other grinders, I feel very little resistance when grinding, and so the whole operation feels very easy and smooth. It must be noted that this is a step grinder with defined steps in the settings. If you wish finer steps, this requires the purchase of an upgrade to the device. I find that the basic steps are sufficient for my needs. I am even impressed that this comes with two receptacles for the ground coffee and a lid so that one may grind some ... MoreThis coffee hand grinder is a little more than I wanted to pay for such a device, but in the end I believe it is well worth the money. I bought the Commandante C40 MK4 to improve the quality of my daily coffee and am very happy I did. The C40 feels solid in my hands, the bearings make the operation very smooth and the grind has a minimal amount of fine dust generated.Setting the size of the grind is very easy and repeatable. I change between a bialetti and a French press quite often and always get exactly the grind I want. For a 32oz press pot, the collection jar is exactly the right size for the proper amount of coffee. And it takes about a minute and a half to grind it.If I we’re making espresso or finer grinds, it might take longer. One thing I don’t know yet is if the internal plastic parts will hold onto the old coffee oils as I use it more. I was curious about this grinder for a while. I read some reviews on this site, One of which said “ Going from my old Hario ceramic grinder to this was like going from a 15 year old Hyundai to a brand new Lexus”. Honestly they were not wrong. I was also using a hario ceramic hand grinder for years, Which was a good little grinder and certainly got the job done, But this commandante is better in every way, Much smoother operation no jamming or popping back ( All those folks using hario grinders for years know what I’m talking about, beans flyin’ everywhere). Far better grind size adjustability and just overall smoother easier operation, easier to turn. The burr doesn’t heat up with intense grinding as it would with hario. Like going from the Stone Age (ceramic burr) to the industrial age (high nitrogen steel burr). The only drawback compared to the hario is that the hario universally fits onto any regular size mason jar, whereas the commandante can only be used with its own jars. This being said in the commandante jars are very reasonably priced and readily available. Very happy with this purchase and would certainly recommend it to anyone interested in a premium hand grinder.

I bought this Comandante C40 MK4 Grinder in Burgundy colour almost over a year. The build quality is great. Just a little bit big and heavy. The grind is so consistent not like my old hario skerton. I have using on my pour over at my v60 or sometime use it on my espresso receipt at my espresso machine . Honestly the C40 could not give a good flow rate in espresso. one click bigger is make the flow rate too fast or one click smaller is will make the flow rate is to slow. If someone looking for espresso grinder, you may need to choose another stepless grinder or buy their separate burr otherwise the espresso will come out to fast or too slow in 25 to 30 second range . Love it

I am in love with my C40Mk4, I am predominantly a v60 filter brewer who dabbles in Aeropress and Chemex. When I had initially gotten more serious about coffee I bought myself a Baratza Encore grinder that has served me well for the last 5 years. But in looking to upgrade and reduce fines I purchased a C40MK4. A brew that used to clog at a medium/medium fine grind now flowed beutifully through my V60. I actually found I was able to take it much finer and get better extraction as I wasn't worrying about a dreaded clogged 4 minute drain. Over the holidays I was gifted a Flair Neo with an upgraded bottomless basket and this has made me love my C40MK4 even more as I can go from pulling great shots at a 7-8 to making a v60 at a 20. Overall I was definitely a little scared ... MoreI am in love with my C40Mk4, I am predominantly a v60 filter brewer who dabbles in Aeropress and Chemex. The golden standard

I have this grinder along with the Kinu m47 simplicity, the 1zpresso jmax (my newest grinder), the porlex mini and hario slim (my first two hand grinders). As for electric, I have a fellow ode, baratza sette 270, the baratza encore, and a mazzer mini. I've also used the Weber workshops eg-1 and key grinders quite extensively, since my job involves coffee and tea. This is still the grinder I end up using for most things aside from my morning espresso! Especially at work or on the go. It's just got that magic to it. Yes it's high quality, and will take your coffee game to the next level, but it's also a standard in the coffee world, which is great when you want to share recipes for brewing methods. Yes it's high quality, and will take your coffee game to the next level, but it's also a standard in the coffee world, which is great when you want to share recipes for brewing methods. The engineering tolerance is very tight, and I've ground Turkish style coffee and Tea powder before with ease. Check out my photo and video of the burrs at 1 click. The only thing I would change is to make the clicks easier to identify, like on the Jmax, but this still makes a better cup and you get used to finding your setting quickly. It's also way better to travel with (and easier to take apart) compared to the Kinu m47, and it actually feels higher quality (because the simplicity has a plastic cup and handle). If you're a coffee (-making) fanatic like me, I highly suggest adding this to your collection, and if you are new to coffee and want the best grind for your money, this is probably it. (Unless you solely want it for espresso, then The Kinu is a little faster, and the best option to completely replace an electric espresso grinder.) Save the money by not buying a motor, haha. I have not tried the red clix mod yet, but I'm excited to get one. It might give it a closer edge on the Kinu. If you're thinking about it, just buy one and start brewing, you won't be disappointed!! Oh, and I've been using it almost every day for 5 months!

You Get What You Pay For

After researching grinder options for more time than I would like to admit, I am extremely happy with the MK4.Feel of the C40:My previous hand grinder was my first hand grinder purchase 6 years ago, the Hario Skerton Pro. In my smaller than average hands, the Skerton Pro was not exactly "comfortable" when grinding since that grinder is about as wide as you can get. This was a concern for me when learning that the C40 had a wider body than other grinder options in this category. However, once in my hand, I found that C40 was actually very comfortable. Also, I would add that the rubber band that is included with the grinder can help with the grip when grinding smaller beans at a finer grind setting. Also, I would add that the rubber band that is included with the grinder can help with the grip when grinding smaller beans at a finer grind setting. I own a wood version of the C40, but the non-wood options may provide more grip based on feedback that I ran across. You can feel the quality of the grinder with its solid build and parts. I appreciate that it is simple to disassemble and clean and personally find the plastic components that some do not appreciate for a grinder of this price is not a concern for me. I appreciate that the design choice helps reduce weight while not impacting the longevity.Grinding Experience with Different Coffee Beans:I also understand that the C40 is not the fastest hand grinder compared to other options available in the market now, but I find that the C40 “cuts” through the beans when grinding vs using more power to grind. When paired with the larger wooden knob on the handle, I find the overall effort expended to crank a C40 to be less taxing than I was used to. For example, when grinding larger size Arabica beans (ex. Illy Classic Medium roast) at 20 clicks, it was not difficult task at all
it like cutting through butter with little resistance on the turns. When grinding light roasted, smaller beans (like Ethopian Chelbesa), it does take more torque, but not enough that my heart rate jumped/I dread the thought of grinding a 2nd batch of 30g.Overall, the grinds produced are incredibly consistent and none of my V60s have stalled since switching to the C40 and the flavors you are able to access with this grinder are the best so far in a 10 yr journey with coffee.Hack to Adjust the Grind Setting:After I watched the C40 cleaning video on the Comandante website and saw how you can hold the grind adjustment dial while turning the handle. 1 rotation of the handle equals 12 clicks. Now, I find it simple to go from 0-24 clicks in no time/no tedious click counting required. I simply line the handle to the Comandante logo on the side of the grinder to benchmark one rotation. I start a new bag of coffee for a James Hoffman style V60 pour over method at 25 clicks and adjust 1-2 clicks finer until to find the best result.C40 Community:One last benefit of buying a Comandante is the community available. I enjoy being able to easily find recipes based on C40 clicks to start dialing in recipes on pour overs.Summary:Overall, I was hesitant paying a significant premium vs other high-quality grinder available. The C40, in my opinion, falls into the "you get what you pay for" category and I have zero regrets after a month of daily grinding.

Yes, you could be perfectly happy with a cheaper grinder. But I bought this as a treat for myself, and I am absolutely loving it. It's a bit slow, but it's well-made and super consistent. As happy as I am, I do see two flaws (possibly) - One thing I genuinely dislike is that there's no effort made to help you remember what grind setting you last used. You can get around this if you notice where your three-legged clicker 'points' (use the small gear decal to orient yourself, e.g.) when you're at your zero point or preferred setting (mine points to the O of "Nitro" when I'm at 20, but yours may point somewhere else). It's easier to calculate where you are this way, instead of going back down to your zero point and counting upwards. The second thing is that I find it ... MoreYes, you could be perfectly happy with a cheaper grinder. It has steel balls that click into indentations, and I believe these steel balls also provide pressure and help stabilize the inner burr. The indentations can get filled with coffee fines, though, so I wonder if this could contribute to more difficult adjustment or slightly eccentric rotation of the burr over time. I do tend to trust Comandante, though, as they seem pretty open and good to work with if anything does go wrong. I partially chose this over a Kinu because Kinu never responded to a request I sent them!
