I was overwhelmed when I first started looking into rods and reels 4 years ago. They make it seem like you need a specific rod and reel for every kind of fish and lure. Eventually, I bought an earlier model of this Daiwa for $20 just to get out on the water. Since then I have caught hundreds of fish on poppers, jigs, spinners, worms, etc. in shallow water, weeds, around trees, and off of docks. You really don't need anything special if you're just heading out for a good time and you can still catch some good ones on this. I am actually only buying this newer model because last Sunday I snapped the end of the rod pulling in a 21.5 inch smallmouth right after nailing a 14 and a 17 (don't worry, he flopped into the boat!). I bought this to use with the lighter weight lures. all my other ones are medium, medium-heavy, or heavy. I only used it once so far, casting from the dock. Casts well and reel is smooth. Haven't hooked anything larger than a perch yet.

I purchased this combo specifically for targeting bass in impoundments. Great casting action for light hardbody lures as well as soft plastics with a variety of jigheads while also providing plenty of feedback around structures, on the bottom and when struck at by fish. Also a very comfortable rod for the price. Reel has a nice, smooth feel to it and is seems robust due to use of quality materials. Spooled with high quality mono.
Awesome rod and reel. Super strong and reel is smooth even after a couple chinook salmon. Biggest was close to 15 pounds. Really recommend!

This a great combo for $30. The reel is a 2 bearing spinning reel that does not come with line, you need to add either 8 or 10 lbs, I went with 8lbs fluoro and it casts very well. The rod is fiberglass and perfectly matched to the reel, it appears to be medium power and moderate fast strength. Don't let the lack of tip stiffness deter you, this is a tough rod that allowed me to land a 3 lbs bass with no issues (using a 3" Creme Lures white swimbait). The sensitivity is great for feedback if I'm bottom dragging and I can throw 1/8 ounce lures with no issues. I wouldn't go higher than 3/4 ounce for this combo. I really appreciate the foam grips, especially ahead of the reel, it has a nice diameter and gives you great control. The large stainless steel guides will last ... MoreThis a great combo for $30. I catch all kinds of fish with this guy. I've had him to Chincoteague and caught some croaker on the pier and more than a few bass back here in PA. It is a long, slow action rod and the reel isn't going to win awards for quietest reel but it gets the job done. Bail snaps shut, drag is smooth and easily adjusted. Simple and effective. It is not heavy, the rod breaks down into two pieces for easy transport and doesn't complain as my wife and I cut our fishing teeth on it. Sorry, would like to give a positive review but in this case I cannot. Handle broke on second cast. Should have known, the reel is terrible, youd expect more from Diawa. I wouldn't even buy this for a child. Dont waste your time & money on this combo. Thankfully Annaconda gave me a full refund, no questions asked
I've had this rod for half a year now and am more than pleased with it. I have used this rod for grunter, bream, moses, trevally, and more. I left the rod unattended for a bit and the 2 piece is now a 1 piece. It can still some off if you need it to but I don't want it to and its perfect! The rod even bends past where the second parts comes off and nothing bad has happened yet! I replaced the line with braid and went a bit over kill with 30lb but it hasn't failed me yet, despite all my friends telling me my braid is too heavy. It is an amazing budget rod and would highly recommend, reel also works well despite the low price of the combo. Will soon be upgrading but i can always trust this rod to be a cheap backup and I'm definitely using Daiwa again!
