This review is specifically for their Blue Apatite Genuine (BAG) color and, subsequently, their customer service. I bought BAG based on swatches using the 138 color dot card on Canson Heritage, Fabriano Artistico, Saunders Waterford, Arches, and Hahnemuhle, all 140lb NOT. However, what I received recently in the 15ml tube is neither the same hue nor similar in characteristic. The hue is far bluer, very close to Mayan Blue Genuine, and does not granulate nearly as much. I tried on all the same papers and the result was consistent across all. I realize this pigment is somewhat affected by the fact it is composed of a natural pigment with minor variations, but what I experienced here is rather extreme.I would not be so disappointed if this weren't a series 4 paint, ... MoreThis review is specifically for their Blue Apatite Genuine (BAG) color and, subsequently, their customer service. Additionally, I've reached out to Daniel Smith (DS) and have yet to receive a response. Generally, DS paints are my go-to, but that may change if I can't rely on what I'm getting.

I am relatively new to watercolor, and I agonized over what brand of paints to buy. Watches tons of videos, read tons of articles. I knew I wanted artist grade, not student grade, and I narrowed it down to Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith. I got the huge dot card sets each of them offer. I ended up buying about 15 of the smallest tubes of each brand. The DS paints to have MUCH more pigment. The depth of color of the DS paints MAKES me want to paint. The WN is nice, but nothing to write home about. If you are trying to decide between the two, I would go DS in the 5ml tubes where possible.

I under appreciated this set until I went back to doing multipe color swatches of mixes of greens. I recommend doing as many color swatch sheets as you can to appreciate the range of greens possible. I would suggest adding Hansa Yellow Medium to any artist who is mixing landscape greens. There is lots to learn about mixing colors. I might suggest adding Mars Black by Winsor Newton but it isn't necessary. Have fun with this set!

I have a small but functional collection of Daniel Smith watercolors. An upcoming watercolor class recommended a neutral dark, and specifically mentioned Daniel Smith's Neutral Tint, so I've added it to my palette and have begun experimenting with it, so it won't be new to me when participating in the class. It seems like a convenience mix, for somewhat more consistent darkening of values. So far, it has been useful for muting more vibrant pigments, and for use in urban landscapes or with dimly lit still life. I don't have to mix my own darks completely from scratch, then struggle to match it if I miscalculate and run out. Instead, a little of this neutral tint with one or two other pigments provides darks that are quicker to replicate later, if needed.
This is my first purchase of a Daniel Smith wc paint. Needed to get a purple, something other than Windsor Purple or a diazo, a pigment that would play well with ultramarine blue, manganese blue, cerulean and umbers, siennas and ochres.I would recommend this. Good consistency, good value with the 15ml tubes. It granulates, but not as much cerulean. It works well with other paints both in consistency and pigment strength.
Daniel Smith's paints are an excellent choice, they mix well, have brilliant coloring and great consistency. Lavender has an opacity to it, but is great for creating atmospheric distance in landscapes, and cool shades in still-life compositions. Sorry it took me #sweepstakes to leave a review! This is my 3 or 4th time replacing this, so I definitely love it! I have introduced my mother to watercolor painting so this time I was replacing to refill her palette.
Here is another addition to my pallet. I bought this to try as and under paint for backgrounds. Was not disappointed. Used Hansa yellow as undercoating when dry then Ihdanthrone Blue, a light green background with yellow under glow. Or New Gamboge undercoat and Ihdanthrone Blue on top, Olive Green with pale yellow glow. Or Quin Red-Orange and Ihdanthrone Blue on top, medium green with orange glow underneath. Need a deep velvety black for a background. Try Ihdanthrone Blue with Black on top. Find your own. There are endless variations to discover your own mixes.
Top quality, but I recently bought Indanthrone Blue and Mayan Blue Dark, and a couple other blues, and the color out of the tube is different from what's on the web site. DS's web site has two or three places where you can see a swatch, and now that I look further at these two colors, the swatches as quite different. Mayan Blue Dark shows ais a true blue in one swatch and definitelly greenish in another. Indanthrone is very purply in one swatch and a deep blue in another swatch (side by side one) on the same web page. These tubes aren't cheap and I don't like getting different colors from what's shown. Is somebody not paying attention over there at DS?
I was looking for something to fill the sky blue spot in my 12 color watercolor palette. My first attempt was DS Cerulean Blue (PB35), but it's VERY granulating and quite dull compared to the rest of my colors. I replaced it with Cerulean Blue Chromium (PB36), and it hits the spot! Still granulating but, I feel it just paints out better/more smoothly, and it's a more intense color when it dries. Rewets very easily after drying in the travel pan. Great straight for skies and blended for spring flowers.
The color image of this gorgeous paint doesn't do it justice - at all! It's not a color you can make for yourself out of RGB or CMYK. It's not a color you will use very often in a painting, unless you use it in a diluted wash. But for times when you want a little unusual accent or a gorgeous reddish sienna or ochre, it's unbeatable and irreplaceable. Do you get the idea that I love this color? Well then, get some and try it yourself.
