A desktop docking solution, but not easy to install and check the power requirements first.

The product certainly does what it offers. I am using it as a desktop hub with 3 monitors attached to a Dell XPS 15. Almost every port on the hub is in use and it is operating very well. My only issue is about the power delivery. The Dell XPS comes with a 130w power supply and I had assumed that this hub would deliver sufficient power because it also comes with a 130w power supply. However, it is only delivering 60w of power to the laptop. Thus the laptop permanently raises a warning that it is attached to an under-powered supply and the battery occasionally drains if there is a big demand for something. Not really an issue with the Hub, but they might help by listing the power output as something to check. Again, a Dell issue which was quite surprising, considering that they are both Dell products. The whole process took most of a day, so not a plug and play solution! PS. The power warning on the XPS can be switched off by going into the BIOS.

All around good docking station. Works well with multiple monitors, charges my laptop, connects many devices flawlessly. One caveat to be aware of if your laptop has 4k screen and monitors connected to dock are not, you need to log out and log back in for resolution to work properly. This is nothing to do with docking station, but windows. Definitely recommend. I'm using it with precision 5200

The idea is good. The specs are good but in practice, I'd steer clear of this device. Why? 1. XPS devices have their thunderbolt port on the LHS. Given that the hub only has 50cm thunderbolt cable you'd think Dell would put the cable coming out of the RHS of the hub. Sadly, not! This means you either have to build something to use the hub on its side or accept that there will be many wires going over yoru desk still. 2. USB C seems robust but becuase of the short hub thunderbolt wire and the long plug housing, the slightest movement of laptop or hub causes a lever effect that over time damages the USB C port on the laptop or the thunderbold cable. XPS laptops have the USB C hardwired into the motherboard, meaning replacement of a cheap component would cost hunderds. ... MoreThe idea is good. Even with Dell only products and the latest firmware and drivers, the hub is flakey. For example, wireless keybaords and mice, no matter how expensive, will periodically stutter with no explaination. 4. The XPS 15 draws 130 Watts. A hub with 240 Watt power supply will still have the XPS 15 complaining that it has an underpowered supply.

PROPRIETARY cable was REQUIRED
14 August 2018

The product is described as needing a USB-C cable and a power adapter. I have both of those and yet the dock will not and cannot work because it requires a proprietary USB-C cable and an unknown connector at the other end. If I had known that a PROPRIETARY cable was REQUIRED I would not have bought the dock. I suspect almost no one would. This is useless unless you spend more money, potentially a lot more money on the PROPRIETARY cable this is REQUIRED.

Some problems, but got it (mostly) working.
9 April 2020

Get it if you need it. Dell bungled the last two docking stations for the Precision and other series. Several negative reviews, some from obvious corporate reviewers with multiple units. Be aware that you could get one with problems. I assume that later updates and FW updates have helped. Dell no longer lists the TB16 on their website for updates. I bought two used units, both claimed to be tested and working. Had problems with both. Seems that power quality could be an issue. One unit would not supply an evident 130w (Bios complained about insufficient power to the laptop), but at work, seems to work fine. Can successfully drive two high res Samsung UE590 4K displays along with a 4K laptop(Dell 5520), but sometimes have to bring monitors up one at a time, especially after docking and undocking. Power sequencing both on startup and shutdown could also be an issue. Earlier reviews talk about the PowerShare USB 3.0 feature on the front port needing to be shut off. The TB16 has the most ports(2 DP, 1HDMI, 1 VGA w/several USB 2.0/3.0), but keep in mind potential problems.

This product has limited functionality
1 November 2021

This product has limited functionality, unless you own a Dell laptop that is specifically designed to work with this docking station. I found that in an enterprise environment, the utility of this DS was hit or miss; having many of them returned for non-functionality. Flaky USB and Network connections were chief among concerns. I am not using this one with a HP laptop, but only for power through USB and multiple displays. Network and USB would cycle off and on.

Very good docking station from Dell. Make sure you have the drivers first!
20 November 2018

Works very well for me. This is a genuine Dell docking station (TB16). Make sure you download Dell Command Update first, and run it. This tool will check your machine and see if you need any additional drivers or driver updates in order to run the TB16 correctly. Just make sure you check the box for TB16 when Command Update asks you what to download. Once you have all the drivers, restart your machine. Then connect this docking station using the included USB-C cable. It should run smoothly.

Works fairly well on an HP machine
11 May 2021

I bought it to try on an HP Spectre because of the freaky high prices for powered HP docks.. It does work, but it has some quirks after the computer sleeps. You basically just have to restart it. I have found that the best course of action is to turn the computer off when you need to walk away for more than 15 minutes. The computer is blazing fast so it starts in about 15 seconds. If you do this, it works perfectly all the time, every time. Also, the power button on the dock won't control the power of the computer. That feature is reserved for Dell laptops only. This forces me to leave the laptop lid open all the time because HP laptops will not power up with the lid shut. As a plug and play, one cable system, this does work. All in all, this $43 solution is much better than a $300 dock from HP that has problems of its own.

I have several of these Dell TB16 thunderbolt docks. I think they are the best on the market in terms of performance and available connections. This product was in excellent condition and worked right out of the box without updates or patching. It was as close to brand new as i can imagine and at a fraction of the price.
