Derwent Coloursoft Pencils are known for their soft velvety strip and rich vibrant colours. These coloured pencils have a round 8mm diameter barrel and a 4mm wide strip. Derwent Coloursoft is an exciting range of highly versatile 72 coloured pencils. The soft, velvety strip allows you to quickly add lots of bold, vibrant colour to your drawing and they're great for colouring in! The core of the Coloursoft range is soft and incredibly creamy, resulting in an overall consistent coverage. Due to the soft nature of the pencil, dry blending is easy, allowing the mixing of colours effortlessly. The Coloursoft is a wax based pencil and so therefore layering can only be applied a limit number of times before a wax build up prevents further layering. However, this can easily be remedied with the application of a solvent based liquid to thin out any buildup. They are best used with mixed media and watercolour paper, but are also suitable for drawing on coloured paper (including black). In comparison to Derwent’s other ranges, Coloursoft is Derwent’s softest colouring pencil.

One caveat about this review: I like fine detailing, so take what I say with a grain of salt.I wanted to love Coloursofts, but, alas, I cannot even like them.Pros: They ARE soft. Most of the colors are permanent to light. They do layer well. Many of the colors are looking to be unique. If you like texturing instead of smoothness, these are fine.Cons: They crumble too easily. Just use them to make the points crumble, as even light pressure causes point failure. (Best used, IMO, with broad points, to glaze/layer.) Prisma Premiers are far better at keeping their points! Any coloring pencil crumbles a bit when sharp. Some brands, like Polychromos, Verithins, Pablos, and Luminances have very little crumbling, scarcely an issue at all. By the way, many of these colors dissolve in water, like a watercolor pencil. And drawing on wet paper makes for some good effects, well worth trying for those who like this kind of pencil. The laydown, for me, is a failure. These pencils are clumpy on every kind of paper I've used. Even Crayolas, Cra-Z-Arts, and Rosearts have a smoother laydown than Coloursofts. For those willing to overlook these faults, this brand has some unique, very useful properties.

I have used these myself and I prefer them over Prisma colors. I bought several of them to replace the prima colors for my classes as they are break resistant and need to be sharpened less. Well, in theory anyway.

Just tried these out breifly...really impressed. I got the skintone package in Derwent and sepia in Tombow, and I like the Derwent a little better. I found the Derwent to be a tad less waxy/Crayola brand-like than the Tombow. I love that they came in a metal case, because I'm a pretty rough and tumble gal as far as my art supplies go, and the case will come in handy when transporting supplies to do portraits. When it's time to get another color family, I'll definately check out what Derwent has to offer first!

I really like these colored pencils. They blend nicely and the colors are very nice. They really look nice when using 2 or 3 different colors to make a variegated flower. So pretty. I've used them on the last 2 pictures I've colored and am happy with them so far. They seem to sharpen easily and I haven't had any breakage yet. Just wish I'd have waited as I noticed they now are less expensive than when I ordered mine a couple weeks ago. If I didn't already have so many different types of colored pencils I would buy them again right now, but I'm running out of storage space.
I have had a couple of days to use these colored pencils and I love them. They are smooth and creamy with really good pigment. The colors are vivid and beautiful. They also work great with the Derwent Procolour and Chromoflow colored pencils. I only color as a hobby, I am NOT a professional artist, not by a long shot, but these pencils are really nice. Amazingly, they work very well with Prismacolor colored pencils too! Yes, I will buy them again, and I would highly recommend them to others.
I am sorry that I am unable to give a good review. I received these individual color pencils with the barcode stickers up by the point you would sharpen. It was awful they would not come off. Trying to sharpen would gum my sharpener. Each pencil the lead would break as if they were dropped many times. I have never had such bad products from you before.
First real exposure to colored pencils, so I am still learning and exploring all the possibilities. I'm looking forward to even more colors in the future. Blending without solvents and filling in those pits in the paper are still tricky, but lightyears ahead of what I expected.
I recently decided to test this product as i am building a set of exclusively lightfast pencils and wanted to see how these performed.I was very pleasantly surprised! They blend beautifully, sharpen well and hold their point. In terms of performance, they reminded me of the Luminance. They have some pigments ranges I've not found in other brands which also make them a valuable addition to my lightfast case.I will be purchasing more of these.
I had bought some prismacolor pencils but found some colors were not as lightfast as I need since I sell some of my work. I am newish to colored pencils but have used other media wanted a media with no fumes. These pencils are similar to prismacolor pencils but have better lightfast. So a bought some to replace some of the prismacolor colors they work well together. Rich and creamy blendable. Feel fantastic in the hand. A beautiful pencil good price for a true artist grade pencil. Thought of other brands but after some research found these the best for the money spent.
I'm an amateur and no artist, but I love to color with these high quality pencils. They definitely take well to a light touch, which is a good thing for me as I've got rather severe arthritis. I've also got a large box of FC Prismacolor pencils and love those too, especially for more detailed work when I need a nice sharp pencil and finer lines. Comparing the two is difficult, kind of apples to oranges, and based highly on personal tastes and needs of the artist. Both are excellent and I'm so glad that I have them, I wouldn't want to pick one. Best way to know, I was told, is to buy about 10 of each, in colors you use a lot, or a small box set.
