I have three different Derwent color pencil sets, in fact I have two full sets of the Procolours alone, they are that good. But I believe a problem Derwent pencils have is that their wood quality is so-so, and it shows in their thinner water color pencils. A few in my set were actually split due to glueing failure. When sharpening you can not use a sharpener that has seen average use with other pencils. That type blade sharpness tears their thin wood barrel, i e the sharpener I typically use on my Faber or Caran's will splinter or split the Derwent watercolor pencil. The remedy is easy, keep and use a razor sharp new sharpener dedicated to the Derwent watercolor pencils only, and sharpen slowly for best results.I typically use my (now four sets) watercolor ... MoreI have three different Derwent color pencil sets, in fact I have two full sets of the Procolours alone, they are that good. But I believe a problem Derwent pencils have is that their wood quality is so-so, and it shows in their thinner water color pencils. They keep a good point and so far are not prone to points breaking off. And, I do like feel of a thinner pencil.

I love Derwent's watercolor pencils. They've got a great texture dry, versatile, colors are excellent. Some good transparencies as well as opaque colors. They dissolve well and re-dissolve as I expect from a watercolor pencil. If you want them to dry water resistant or waterproof, get Derwent Inktense or some other brand, I think the Albrecht Durer ones are more like Inktense. But Derwent's are proper watercolor pencils - the resulting watercolor effect can be lifted, lightened, re-wetted to charge in more color, edges softened and of course, can be used dry into wet for strong effects. Easy to handle. Not that prone to internal breakage, no worse than regular pencils on that. Derwent's website is good for listing lightfastness of specific colors, which is useful ... MoreI love Derwent's watercolor pencils. They've got a great texture dry, versatile, colors are excellent. Derwent's website is good for listing lightfastness of specific colors, which is useful depending on what you want them for. They also have good tutorials. Wonderful portable water media, I keep finding more and more use for them. Excellent for plein air or any kind of sketching on the go, a small palette gives the blendability of watercolor, but a large set in an elastic-band case is still fairly compact and allows all the dry-medium precision of hues. Very good in watercolor painting to either pull from tip or dissolve tip, or just scribble patches to use for a mini-palette in a travel journal or sketchbook.

I admit to not having tried many other pencil brands, but have been using Derwent for years. They provide good pigments, and I'm a big fan of watercolor pencils. Always a bit challenging to sharpen the pencils when you order online as the barcode stickers are on individual pencils (if not ordering in a tin pack - not barcode issues here). I've lost quite a bit of pencil trying to get the barcode sticker off. All and all, I would recommend Derwent and find them to be affordable for the quality that is offered. I do love Blick's option to buy pencils individually so that you can have a selection of colors of your choosing.

I love the watercolor pencils and how they behave. The tin leaves much to be admired. I purchased another set from another company, a set of 48 and they used a layering system in their tin. I appreciated the size of that tin.
Other artists may be fussy when it comes to pencil breakage and/or wood casings. I am not quite that when it comes to watercolor pencils. Instead, I look for strong pigments and fluid blending properties. My first Derwent colored pencil set was a set from their Inktense series. Up until then, I had only really used Faber-Castell's "Aquarelle" series so it might be unfair in comparing the Derwent Artist grade against a [more or less] student grade series. I found I really loved the Inktense pencils - but then needed more skin tone colors for the work I do. Already impressed by Derwent's [non-soluble] colored pencils, I am now building - pencil by pencil - more natural and mid-range tones from their watercolor pencil line. I found this color shopping for another color I needed, as the watercolor pencil set my Mother got me was unfortunately missing it's Vermilion color. But I found this beautiful yellow-green, perfect for the nature art pieces I like to make. I got two other colors as well, I used them in a mini painting I made, I think It came out pretty nice for a young armature artist! The color's are great and the quality is better than my other set, I'll buy from here again when I'm able to!#sweepstakes
I purchased these watercolor pencils for my first attempt at branching out into other mediums. I was thinking I'd just get a little color into a sketch I'd done, and be finished. But these pencils are everything I didn't know I needed. They lay down nice rich color, when working with them as pencils. Then when adding a little water with the brush to blend - wow! Nice smooth color, and when the paper is just slightly damp, they give an even richer distinct color, for adding details that you don't want blended in. I am completely happy with this product! And the nice tin they come in is perfect to protect them when taking them with you from place to place. Just throw it in your bag and go! No worries about broken points or even broken or lost pencils. I actually have ... MoreI purchased these watercolor pencils for my first attempt at branching out into other mediums. I have a couple of derwent WC pencils and the quality of this line is very good. They are almost as nice as CdA's $$$ Museum line. The deep chrome color is a great shade to use drawing hair. Very versatile. It's very misnamed though. It's more of muted orange with a lot of brown-- the color of a lot of red-heads hair. In general I have found Derwent's color names to be misleading. They don't use the same names that we expect from the world of watercolor painting. That's my only critique though. It just makes shopping a little more confusing. #sweepstakes
Derwent has always made top-notch products. I first bought the smaller watercolor pencil set, and finally decided to expand my choice of colors. Good color and deep pigments for your watercolor needs.
I knew it would be pale but its really chalky. Might as well be cream. Other derwents are better. I think it's hard to get this sort of tone right. #Sweepstakes
