The drywall cut out tool was not initially easy to use. The instruction manual lacked instruction for how to secure or lock the bit in place. Unfortunately it was not intuitive how to do this. I have never used one of these type tools before so I had previous experience to compare it to. I laid out my piece of drywall to be trimmed and found the tool effortless to use. Back to the drywall cut out tool - I liked the variable depth gauge that may be changed on the fly. The 1 Led bright Light kept the work area well lit without the need for additional lighting. The kit I received had 2 batteries which is always helpful to be able to keep on working without stopping for a recharge. The charger went from 1 to 3 bars for both batteries in about an hour very quick! What I found myself wanting was an additional hand hold to help guide the unit for more fine cuts. The other it that I found myself wanting a an attachment for a straight edge cut like for an electrical box cut out or other. Yet even without these the unit is impressive to use!

WOW! If you had the previous generation that was great, you’ll be extremely impressed with this upgrade. The biggest, in my opinion, change was for pure comfort and that is the barrel or grip area. Far more slim and easier to grip providing much more control. I really like the ease of the chuck and also greatly appreciate the 1/8” collet included along with the 1/1 6”. Now the on/off button has been relocated to the top for easy thumb activation. The kit does include a belt clip, belt clip screw, 1/8” collet, 1/16” collet, two 1/16” bits, charger, 2 amp hour battery, carry bag and the tool itself. The 1st test for my new tool was on fiberglass. I repaired a fiberglass trailer fender and needed to cut a 6” x 2-1/2” hole for a tail light. With an 1/8” bit she cut it ... MoreWOW! The final cuts were a lot cleaner cutting down on patching and painting times. I even got very good at free handing circle cuts for recess lighting installs.Although I don’t need to change the bit too often, its incredibly easy with the quick change head. No wrenches to loose. The bits are durable and leave a glean accurate cut.The added benefit of using the same batteries as all my other DeWalt tools is incredibly helpful. No need for a special charging station and I always have a spare battery laying around. And if you ever used the slim 20v batteries you know how lightweight they are. I have nothing but Dewalt tools. So, am dedicated to them. Not having a variable speed on this really bothers me on the function. There are many circumstances where full speed isn't just needed and slow and steady performs the best. I hate having to pull out my Dremel to do the job instead. AT least Milwaukee has a version that has a variable speed option. Seems Dewalt is always a step behind. I have way too many Dewalt tools and batteries just to switch over at this point. It works and does the job. Just not an all-around tool like i would hope.

This Brushless Drywall Cut-out tool kit has just about everything you need to get started with right out of the box. Very cool that it includes (2) 2 Ah Lithium batteries. That's a big plus for me as most kits only include one. It's got both a 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch collet in the kit and two different 1/8 inch cut-out bits included to get you going. I kind of wish the dust shroud was included, but will definitely be picking that up soon. This tool has some good weight to it. It weighs 2 pounds 9.5 ounces with the battery and bit. To me that's a good weight , and it feels good in my grip. The cutting depth guide is easy to adjust, lock down, and remove when needed. The collet lock down will take some getting used to, but it is nice you don't need a tool to replace bits... though it looks like you can still get a wrench on it if desired. It's got a nice soft start and when it ramps up to full speed it is not loud at all. 20,000 rpms to cut into the drywall like butter. I have never been a fan of the lights that keep getting put on power tools, and really wish there was an on/ off switch for it and that really is my only dislike for the tool. I may be the only one to think a bubble level could be useful on it, but I got to say it. All in all, if you are a professional drywaller or even a DIYer this cut-out tool is definitely a must have for your tool box, bag, or belt.

This DCE555 Drywall Cut-Out Tool is a must for anyone. I am a DIY to semi professional when it comes to household repairs, electrical, plumbing and in this case, drywall. We recently added a 200 sq ft outbuilding and insulated it with drywall. I wanted power in all areas so this meant having to cut several outlet boxes. After cutting the first one with a regular pull saw, I saw this advertised and decided I have to try it. I have 12 outlets all together. The two on the ceiling were worth every penny of this unit because having to pull saw on a ladder isn't my idea of fun. Make sure you are to the side when using this above your head because the dust is an issue, I didn't see any shop vac adapters for this. Probably because the drywall would clog the filters but it would still be a nice accessory. How to use this unit is easy. I used a scratch awl to make a hole in the drywall then popped the bit in, turned it on and routed my lines. Its stupid easy to use and very comfortable in your hand no matter how you cut the hole. Balanced with the battery on the back and doesn't feel like it's out of control at any point. Buy an extra bit so you have it if incase you aren't paying attention and you find a drywall screw. Bit change is really easy though and I think this collet system should be used on more things like routers. All in all it's worth the price even if it's for one project because now I have a quick and easy way to make new outlets in my wall paneling when that's next on the honey do list.

As a general contractor and home builder, I don't install drywall every day personally. However, there are enough times when I need to cut out a door opening, outlet box, or anything else that this comes in very handy. It's quite small, uses the same 20v batteries as all my other tools, and does not have a cord to drag around. In the past, I have used a corded cut-out tool when installing drywall in an entire house but the cord always got caught on the scraps. This is incredibly convenient when needed and small enough to throw into one of my main tool boxes. My only complaint would be the 1/8" bits that come with the kit are too thin to use effectively on any standard job. I managed to break both bits when trying to cut out both sides of a door opening. I took the Dewalt cut out tool to a basement repair job. Where I had to remove and replace water damaged sheetrock in a basement. It came with two bits, I used both on this job. I used the pilot bit to find and follow the stud down to remove the damaged sheet rock and leave a clean edge. Then using the standard point to cut off half the edge of the sheetrock on top of the stud, giving me an edge to nail the new rock to. There were not any electrical boxes in this wall but I am sure it will do that job too.I like the size and the ergonomics of the handle. Any bigger and you would lose the finesse and control you need for a clean precise cut. Any bigger and you would lose the finesse and control you need for a clean precise cut. When I was cutting off the sheetrock on top of the stud I used two hands one held the tool and my second hand I held against the stud like an edge guide (maybe Dewalt could develop an edge guide to fit into the depth guide bracket). The 2Ah battery gives the tool a good balance. I put a 5Hh battery on it and it was to heavy on the backside.Very bright light which is nice. The collect lock button is a pain to use, in fact I hate it. I ended up fighting the depth gage (and removing it) just to get the bit tight and it does not give you leverage to tighten the collet nut. The nut is smooth and slippery and all the edges are rounded and you have to press the lock button very deep for the nut to engage, then turn the nut and dodge the depth gage. I ended up putting some rubber grip tape on it. I would prefer a wrench (in fact that’s what I end up using) over this very cumbersome set up.The power and balance of the tool is great, it has one hole drilled for a right-handed belt clip. I’m left handed and hung it on my left side, so every time I hung it or reached to use it I had to turn it around or use it up side down.I fits into the cadre of Dewalt tools that I have and is build with the strength and durability I have come to expect from Dewalt. It is a solid tool that will speed up my work, saving time and money.

[Rewarded Review] Sheet rock cutter DCE555

The length of this tool with the bit inserted is about 12.5" which makes it very usable in tight spaces. The feel is nice in the hand and is equally comfortable in either R or L hand. I will note that the provided belt clip will only mount to one side of the tool and seems to be oriented for right handed people but wasn't any trouble to use from the left side with just a simple half twist. The tools free bit change is nice but I wasn't able to change the bits comfortably or with any efficiency, without removing the depth gauge first. This is not a hard process as it is held on the tool by spring loaded arms that turn out at the ends to help remove the gauge and reinstall it on the tool. The way the tool stays on without holding the button was very useful for ... MoreThe length of this tool with the bit inserted is about 12.5" which makes it very usable in tight spaces. This is not a hard process as it is held on the tool by spring loaded arms that turn out at the ends to help remove the gauge and reinstall it on the tool. The way the tool stays on without holding the button was very useful for changing hands and gives multiple ways of holding it while lets just say not in the most comfortable positions or in hard to reach ceilings. The light is very helpful for seeing any line you wish to stay on but I would recommend to cut upwards as the shadow from the bit may hinder a very precise cut. This is not a bad shadow but was something I wanted to mention. The depth gauge was easy to adjust and had a clear view of the cutting area. Battery life seems to be pretty good as it came with 2x 2ah batteries and I didn't use the first one to failure. Over all I would recommend this tool to any one remodeling a home or hanging sheet rock professionally. Its simple design makes it easy to use for beginners and I can see a lot of potential for the professional to speed up their process with this tool.

[Rewarded Review] Top notch improvements!!
7 July 2023

So let start off with this tool is nice! I wasn’t expecting much as far as improvement but was blown away after I had used the updated model. The shaft you hold is reduced so it’s very comfortable in the hand, the power button is super accessible and right by your thumb making it very easy to power on and off. The light seems to be brighter those who do top out in commercial buildings know the need of a light, the light also stays on for about 10 seconds after power down. Also the slow ramp up is a nice added feature instead of the instant 100% on, it also ramps down when shut off. I’m definitely happy with the slight but beneficial changes with the xrp brushless design. This tool will do the job and do it well!! Don’t hesitate to grab one
