Explore subterranean labyrinths! Plunder hoards of treasure! Battle legendary monsters! The Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set is your gateway to action-packed stories of the imagination. This box contains the essential rules of the game plus everything you need to play heroic characters on perilous adventures in worlds of fantasy.Ideal for a group of 4 – 6, the Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set includes a 64-page adventure book with everything the Dungeon Master needs to get started, a 32-page rulebook for playing characters level 1 – 5, 5 pregenerated characters, each with a character sheet and supporting reference material, and 6 dice. Editorial Review The Escapist Products are hard—they have to straddle quality, price, fidelity, and approachability. They need to remain true to the rules while being easy to learn. They need to provide a good representation of what the product line is like while remaining an impulse buy. The D&D Starter Set does this well, with rules that can be grasped quickly balanced by a price that's hard to argue with.

A cleaner, tighter, more useable presentation of 5e D&D than the PHB, DMG, and MM

Of all the published 5e adventures, the Lost Mine of Phandelver and the Dragon of Icespire Peak are the best. They give you a world to explore and quest in, whereas the other 5e adventures give a railroad style campaign narrative or an overwhelming poorly organized jumble (Curse of Strahd is an exception - Curse of Strahd is great too). For character creation, the Essentials Kit rules are great, especially for beginners or rules-light folks (like me!) - they give you the essential D&D character races, classes, backgrounds and spells, rather than the analysis-paralysis-inducing glut of character and spell options in the Player's Handbook. Likewise, the monsters in the Lost Mine of Phandelver and Dragon of Icespire Peak appendices are the quintessential D&D monsters - goblins, orcs, dragons, ogres, owlbears, centaurs, undead, cultists, mimics, stirges, with a smattering of exotic pretties like the doppleganger and nothic - you can run a lot of awesome D&D adventures with them alone, sans Monster Manual! The MM does have all those cool, adventure-inspiring monster write-ups, but I actually prefer the brief monster descriptions in these adventure books - the details aren't necessary when the monsters are already placed in an adventure, and I prefer to imagine up my own monster personalities/descriptions. (Although when it comes to moster tactics, there's no beating The Monsters Know What They're Doing - an essential book for any 5e DM). For any DM who wants to really study the game and learn it, these are the products to do it: with a tight set of familiar spell, monster, magic item, and character archetypes and the core mechanics of the system, without the dizzying fluff of the DMG, MM, and PHB.

I ran it for a group and we all loved it. There is a good amount of content in the adventure. Players have a main plot they can follow, but there are multiple paths the players can take to complete it. It is built in a way that as the adventure proceeds, more of the rules are slowly implemented. It is great for any group that is new to Dungeons and Dragons, or any group who is new to the 5th Edition mechanics and would like to ease into them. The adventure even contains several side quests (smaller adventures that are not necessary to the central plot), so there is plenty of content to keep groups going for several sessions. The premade characters contain personal quests that tie them into the story. The art is all really great. There are maps of all major locations that are beautifully done. I thought the dice were of nice quality and was happy to add them to my collection. What it is not:The rule book included in this set teaches the game, but it’s not a complete Players Handbook (another product that greatly expands upon the rules contained in this kit). Character creation is not covered in the included rule book. However, if your players want to create their own characters rather than use the pregenerated ones included, you have options. If you do not want to purchase the Player’s Handbook until you’ve tested the game out, or are gaming on a budget, Wizards of the Coast provides a free rulebook file on their website that provides character creation rules for the 4 classic classes (Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, and Wizard). The set only includes 1 dice set. It could be tricky or time consuming to run a game with only one set, so I personally suggest having a few more dice to prevent the game from getting bogged down. While all major locations contain maps, minor locations doIn conclusion, I found this to be an excellent value. I am a veteran gamer and dungeon master, and felt this product basically sold me on the new 5th edition system and revived my interest in Dungeons and Dragons. Any of its short comings can easily be overcome for free through wizard’s website, or through purchasing the Player’s Handbook (which I recommend because it’s also a Grade-A product). For the listed price, my friend and I got more entertainment out of it than I could have hoped for.

The "books" are not very substantial and made out of very flimsy STAPLED paper, not like a paperback book. The staples are photoshopped out of the box images. The space for 1/2 of the box is taken up with a cardboard lift and the box is less than 1/2 full. The kids were disappointed with this and we do not recommend. Purchase an actual book, and dice separately. I am going to ask for their money back. I am REALLY glad I got this on sale because it is not worth the sale price, so full price would have been SUPER irritating if they can not refund the kids' money. The dice are good quality, and outer box looks neat, (Although misleading), plus color photos in the pamphlets, so 2 stars for that.(Notice I don't call them books🤪)

The adventure alone could be considered worth that price. Fun to Have
3 February 2023

My significant other really likes stuff like this. We don't play, but we have been really interested in occasionally playing with friends that do. It was exciting to open and look at everything, all the detailed art and cards. Great for fans of fantasy and role playing and to have on your bookshelf. A really good gift.

If you're reading this you're probably thinking that you want to start playing drunk Dungeons and Dragons, and you can do that with this kit. Buy this and read the campaign throughly because you will need to at least be a decent dungeon master. You can somewhat wing it as a dungeon master but you need to know the way around the campaign and the game mechanics. You need to be able to improvise on the fly, and you can't do thatSo much as the dungeon master if you don't know the mechanics and campaign. They have made this alot easier to grasp in edition 5. Seriously, just grab this and jump in, be the dungeon master, scrub up, post on Facebook "who wants to eat pizza, drink and play d&d" and curious people will say yes. Loads of fun. Why not-

PERFECT for trying out GMing
21 June 2022

I looked into how to start GMing. I've always been a PC, so thinking about being a GM was a bit overwhelming- this set comes with EVERYTHING I need to start out. I've gone from mostly nervous, to mostly excited. And everything in here is an easy read, even if you've never been a PC or are mostly unfamiliar, the starter set is awesome. It's a randomly selected adventure as far as I can tell, but it gives you everything you need to get started and makes it super easy. Highly recommend, it because the only way to get over the nerves and the feeling of needing to plan for EVERY single scenario as a new GM, is to actually just do it! Dive in, get used to improv, and have fun!

Some good points, but complicated for beginners
29 December 2017

This starter set has a lot of positives, including a detailed adventure designed to take the characters from level 1 to about level 5, with good notes to help the Dungeon Master run the adventure well. My main complaint is that for a starter set, the rules are too complex, and not explained well enough. I used to play AD&D first edition and second edition years ago, so I have a good idea of how role-playing games work, and I'm familiar with the character classes and races in D&D. The version of the rules used in this starter set is improved in many ways from the versions that I played, but the rules are also considerably more complex than they need to be (in my opinion), especially for beginners. I had to spend a lot of time reading and re-reading the rule book to get to the point where I felt that I was ready to run the adventure, and then I had to stop and look up rules quite often while playing. This complexity turned me off from the game, and I imagine that it would be even more frustrating for someone who is truly a beginner and who has never played a role-playing game before.I would recommend that they simplify the rules, provide some more examples of how the rules work, and move some of the less important rules into an "optional rules" appendix.

Story is Great…the Set is Disappointing
7 April 2022

I was mainly ordering this for a copy of the adventure module to get more practice DMing. I had heard great things about the story so I bought the set, and I have to say that comparing it to The Dragon of Icespire Peak, I do favor this module over Icespire. While Icespire has a good story and plays pretty well, it could have been a bit better and required a little tweaking along the way, Both are in the same town setting of Phandolin, but Lost Mines has better backstory and setup for you to fully know what’s been going on, what types of motivations and goals different key NPCs have, and various adventure hooks to draw interest from your players. It’s all just stapled together. It doesn’t even have a proper front and a back to it, your “cover” is the table of contents and your “back” is your index, so I’m just tucking it in a notebook to prevent peeking. Everything else is stripped down to bare bones as well with this set, and I wouldn’t really call it everything you need to start playing D

Very Good for the First Time Dungeon Master, Just OK for the New D&D Player Only
6 October 2021

A good starting point if one wants to try out D&D AND be a/the Dungeon Master for your group. The premade character sheets and adventure book facilitate being a Dungeon Master for the first time. While the Starter Set is a good value for what one gets, if one is only interested in being a player then The Starter Set is likely not that great of a value for you. Reading the adventure book will ruin the surprises and the Dungeon Master running the Starter Adventure will provide the premade character sheets, so that leaves the dice, which are fine, and the printed Starter Rules which are available as a PDF. For what you get it is a good value, especially at Target’s price. How good of a value it is for you depends on whether you want to be the Dungeon Master or be a Player.
