A very Capable Device

I bought a Netgear Nighthawk CAX80 (Combo, I review it here as well) that gives my whole house Wi-Fi 6 (Not as good as I thought). In my situation, I needed a cheap device that provided Wi-Fi 6E for my office second floor garage to avoid congestion, I have an Alienware M15 R7 and I need it work reliably fast. This is what I did:I plugged to power the device, then I used a cat8 cable from my gateway combo to the eero following the instructions, the setup though the app was very easy and fast. I didn't have to do AP mode or anything else, my Netgear kept working as a router and the eero got online like another router with the SSID I set up. You have to give it some time to work properly and connect all the devices you want in the right frequency, it is all auto detect and auto setup, and this is where my problems started, I did not see 2.4Ghz or 5GHz or 6GHz, only one SSID. I had to restart my laptop like 3 times, had to call eero support, they did a few things but....I want my devices connected to the band I want, not to the band the device think is the best for my equipment. I know this is a feature most mesh system have but I also think this is a feature all Wi-Fi systems should have: Separate the bands, please!!!So, I tested one device only and this is my opinion:Pros:The setup is easy, the app is easy to use, the range I dare to say that was better than my Netgear seriously, when I was close to the eero the speed was the same than a wired connection. If you need two or more of this device use wired backhaul, you will get great speeds.Cons:This device does not separate the Wi-Fi bands, that's my only concern and why I had to return it.

I purchased this product in hopes of increasing my wifi speeds in my home and it did not. It is a good product that produces fast wifi speeds but not any better than my xfinity gateway and netgear extender. In the same room as my gateway, speeds range from 800-850mbps from my xfinity gateway. The eero produced speeds of 750-800mbps so not better and just a bit slower.Downstairs from my gateway and next to the mesh eero unit, i would get very similar test speeds from 350-450mbps and received no improvement even though the eero 2nd and 3rd satellite units were just 2-3 feet away from me.The Eero app is far advanced vs the nighthawk app. It is extremely easy to setup and use. Being able to edit and name each device connected to the unit was very nice. The one extreme negative I thought is that no one at Eero support (I talked to 3 different people) could tell me exactly what speed each frequency runs at. So the unit is sold & marketed as AX5400 but what is the speed of each frequency? Like netgear/linksys/asus tell you that 2.4ghz runs up to 600mbps or 1.2gbps and 5ghz runs up to 2.4gbps or 3.6gpbs, whatever the rating may be, well eero only states that you receive 1.3gbps at wireless speeds and no one at support can tell you any better. Well how do you know you are getting the 5400? I find that strange that no one knows how fast each frequency is running.Overall, good product that produces good speeds but just did not improve my speeds as I had hoped so decided to just not spend the extra money and stay with the xfinity gateway.

First step was to download the eero app and set up an account. I needed to set up the eero mesh system in 'bridge' mode, because the router provided by AT&T also controls our U-Verse box, so I couldn't do away with the AT&T router altogether. To do so, you plug in your first eero box (any of them can be used as a gateway). You can go into the settings and chose to switch it to Bridge mode with a check box. From there, the set up instructions are really simple, step by step in the eero app. Once the first eero box is set up (give it a name/location etc) you can either continue to connect devices to it, or you can go and set up your next box. Each box did need to have a software update, and unfortunately, when it's updating, the app almost looks like it's frozen, which concerned me. However after a few minutes, the images on the screen updated to show the new software version. With the 3 eero boxes, you can cover up to 6,000 sqft, which is plenty of coverage for my home. I have an AT&T GigaPower plan and the eero Pro 6e system is rated for network speeds up to 2.3 Gbps when using both wired (up to 1 Gbps) and wireless (up to 1.3 Gbps) client devices, so again, excuse the pun, there's plenty of 'bandwidth' with this system to be able to upgrade the data speeds in the future! Alternatively you can get speeds as has high as 2.5 Gbps when using a dedicated 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port.Once set up, the first thing I did was check the speed of the eero Pro 6e mesh system, I connected my phone to the system and also set up a guest network. I've included a screen shot from the eero app and it's showing 946 Mbps download and 317 Mbps upload speed. Prior to having the eero mesh system installed I was getting speeds that were about 1/3 of that - maybe 320 Mbps upload and 105 Mbps download, so already there has been a huge improvement in speed/connectivity. Content on my phone is loading instantly, I am a YouTuber and record and upload/download in 4K directly from my phone and the difference is fantastic!Setting up devices in the app is very easy, and you end up having a fully working ecosystem in just a few minutes. I have over 90 devices connected to my network at any time (this system supports 100+ according to the box), including lights, thermostats, computers, phones and other smart devices. And interestingly enough, newer Amazon Echo products also have the eero ability contained within them, which allows them to act like wifi range extenders themselves. We have Echo devices in almost every room, so we should have pretty much a seamless mesh now!Having the eero Pro 6e set up in 'bridge' mode does limit a few of the advanced features of the system, a little frustrating, but that was the only way I could set up and use eero and keep my U-Verse up and running (yeah, I know, I should really just ditch it!). You can pay a $99/yr subscription to a paid version of the eero app that includes ad blocking software, online security and advanced parental controls, but for what I need at this time, the basic version of the app is just fine. However, I did find that each time I was in the app, the prompt to upgrade to the $99/yr subscription was fairly constant, which was a little annoying. The eero Pro 6e is a Tri-Band system, meaning that it will take care of all of your older 2.4 GHz devices, work with your newer 5 Ghz devices and then seamlessly integrate with 6 GHz devices as more and more of them become available. Makes me feel like I don't have something that will become outdated really quickly like so many tech gadgets can these days.Due to the nature of some of my smart devices and their position in the home, I use a couple of additional ethernet switches. It's a shame that there are only two ports on the back of these eero boxes, one in and one out. More options for connectivity would be useful. Another thing I have noticed after a few days using the eero system is that each of the white eero boxes does get quite warm. And as you can see from my attached pictures, one in the dining room and one in a bedroom, it's not as if they don't have adequate space/ventilation around them. Not sure what keeps them so warm.Overall, I was really impressed with the speeds displayed on my network after installing the mesh system, my dining room was notoriously a bad area in the house, so setting up one box in there was a must. And the second box up in the furthest area away from my main router has really opened up that area of the house as well. The ease of set up is worth the price of entry alone, being as this is definitely not the cheapest system out there, it is a very robust and simple to use solution.I've looked into getting a mesh system for a few years now, and after my experience with the eero Pro 6e - I am both wishing I had of taken the plunge a lot sooner, but also glad I didn't, so I could experience everything that this eero Pro 6e system has to offer!

Fast Stable System

My internet provider recently upgraded my internet speed to a new 1 Gigabit service (actually 940/880 Mbps), and I also got this eero Pro 6E to upgrade the mesh system. Installation: Using the eero app, the installation was quick and easy. The app gives step-by-step instructions. Disconnect power to your service provider router, connect one eero mesh device (that will be the main one) to the router, connect power to the router, and then the main eero. After, place the other eero mesh and connect wirelessly using the app to the main eero. Each device has USB-C power and a power plug, which is excellent since USB-C is becoming standard. The product states that it covers up to 6,000 square feet. This signal must be good because I did not get enough signal in other systems since my outside walls are heavily insulated. Each eero has two Ethernet ports, one 2.5 G and one 1G bit speed. The speed was similar using a combination of different mobile phones, desktops, and tablets. The average download was 829 Mbps, and the upload was 726 Mbps. Currently, I don’t need it, but it is good to know that eero offers parental controls and online security with a subscription to “eero Plus,” which costs $99.99/ year. With this, you get parental controls (block ads, filter content, limit access to specific sites and applications), track data usage over time, and additional protections (1Password, Malwarebytes, and Encrypt.me). Overall, this is an excellent stable system.

With so much of a household running on wireless these days, having a system that just works and doesn’t require continual tinkering is more important than ever. With many players in the market, eero, an Amazon company, has updated their lineup with the latest Wifi standard, 6E, in the new eero Pro 6E system.Mesh systems allow for multiple wireless nodes to work seamlessly with your devices, effectively extending wireless coverage throughout your space and balancing how many of your devices are connected to a single node. They automatically adjust things like radio frequency to avoid interference and try to keep everything running smoothly. Most systems allow for either a wired connection between the nodes or for the nodes to connect wirelessly. When using wireless connections for the mesh nodes, the nodes will use the same radio frequencies as your devices, so a system with 3 or even 4 radios (bands) is preferred if you have a busy network with a lot of devices that need a bunch of bandwidth. The new eero Pro 6E has 3 radios across 3 bands – the classic (and crowded) 2.4ghz, 5ghz, and the newly unlocked 6ghz range (Wifi 6E). This allows the system to balance your devices across these bands and find enough “clean air” for the mesh system operate without dragging down your network performance. The 6ghz band is new and not many wireless systems use it yet, so the mesh can use this space for the backhaul connection, or it can be used with the few 6E devices on the market. In the box is a simple set of instructions, the 3 eero nodes, power supplies, and a single ethernet cable. The nodes are slightly larger and taller than the previous wifi 5 pro nodes and are heavier, likely the shell is hiding larger antennas in a more optimal coverage configuration then the previous system. Each node has 2 ethernet ports, one of which is a 2.5gbps port, and the other is limited to 1gbps. This is something of a curious configuration – on the “gateway” node, the 2.5gbps port is likely to be used to connect to your internet provider’s equipment, especially if you have multi-gigabit service, leaving the 1gbps connection for connecting the mesh together if you are using a wired backhaul. This means all of the nodes connected to any other eero mesh nodes wirelessly or wired and all wired clients are limited to a maximum of 1gpbs internet, which considering the wireless speeds this system can create, is an odd limitation. It also means that in order to connect multiple nodes together with a wire, you would need a switch or to “daisy chain” the nodes, which is not how homes are typically wired. It’s pretty clear to me that the ethernet ports are to be used for a switch to connect your wired devices to or to connect wired devices on the nodes (which is a handy feature, the ports can be used on the nodes by any ethernet device, which is useful for those things that don’t have wireless or have trouble with it), while leaving the mesh nodes to connect to each other wirelessly. As an existing eero user, setup was pretty straightforward. Just open the app, click the + button, go to replace an existing eero device, and follow the two prompts to swap out a node with another node. The most tricky node was the gateway node connected to my cable modem – I did have to reboot the cable modem to get the new eero to connect to the internet and go. For new users, set up is also simple – just download the app, create an account, and follow the on-screen instructions to set up your new network. One quirk with eero is that the setup and configuration is entirely done through the app, so you must have an internet connection and a smartphone in order to create and connect your network. There is no browser-based setup that can be reached from a laptop or mobile device. You can plug in the eero to an existing router and keep your phone on your older wireless network during setup, and then swap out the older device if you have no cell coverage at all, but in the event something goes wrong with the eero network you would have no way to diagnose or troubleshoot it.My previous eero system was the Pro model based on wifi 5. It was solid, but not fast, especially at any distance from the nodes. Speeds of 200 or so mbps would be typical, and frequently even lower. This new system screams in comparison, with a Wifi 6 Surface Pro getting receive speeds of over 2gbps (2000mbps), and transmit in the 1.4gbps ranges in adjacent rooms. I was pulling down a game download at the full speed of my internet connection, at a little bit over 800mbps (a blazing 100 megabytes per second). An 8GB game download took under 2 minutes. By using 160mhz wide bands and Wifi 6, speeds are much higher than the previous systems and it can support a huge number of devices. I have a very busy network, with multiple smart home devices, gaming consoles, work and personal computers, etc. and it handles all of the needs of the home with ease. The interface itself is fairly easy to use, with devices grouped by type. Additionally, you can group devices into profiles and assign things like parental controls to the kids’ devices etc. You can also see utilization and activity on your network, which is helpful if you have a metered connection or just want to see what activity is going on. Devices can be “paused”, preventing them from going through the gateway to the Internet, which can be handy if it’s time for the kids to stop using a device or if something is acting fishy on your network. You can create custom names for things, as sometimes devices appear with strange names and you want to give them a more friendly one. These names are cosmetic only, and not an actual DNS entry, and there are no features like VPN, dynamic DNS, etc. It is very much a consumer-oriented system with only a few extra features like port forwarding included. One nice feature is the ability to have multiple admins on a network. This allows control and troubleshooting to be shared with someone else, which is great for families where the system may be installed in a home with less technical people who may need help from time to time, or if it is installed in a shared living space.eero has a premium subscription service to add additional features such as content filtering (parental controls), ad blocking, and threat prevention. It works fairly well, but doesn’t tell you exactly what it is blocking, so it is hard to tell what value you are getting out of it. The ad blocker can also lead to massive frustration, as it has a tendency to block the sponsored links in search engines, which are often what you are looking for and the first link that comes up. It also never blocks Amazon ads, which while not surprising, is a smack in the face for a service you pay extra for. Since this is an Amazon device, it is important to pay attention to “new features” that Amazon keeps wrapping into their product ecosystem. One of the latest is the ability for the newest Echo devices to be eero extenders. I would not recommend this for eero Pro users, as the radios in the Echo are not going to be as capable as the Pro series, unless you really had a coverage gap at a corner of a home or outside and only the Echo could cover it.Overall, the eero pro 6E delivers on its promise of a set it and forget it wireless mesh system with much improved performance than the wifi 5 based eero systems and should meet the needs of just about any household. While it may not have all of the power user knobs to turn like some systems, it’s good performance and rock solid connections make it the perfect solution for home settings.

If you are a novice and want an inexpensive 6e router and are not concerned about your personal data, then this is not a bad option. If you want more control over your network security and desire more transparency, try a device like Linksys Atlas AXE8400. That is what I am replacing this with.

It’s simply not necessary.I decided to go ahead with the recommendations to name the Wifi the same as my previous one such that all the devices would simply connect to the new eero system. I have a smart home setup with over 60 connected devices and all of them connected flawlessly. While there are not many products out there that support 6e technology yet, they will likely come fast and furious as the tech standard evolves so this will be future proof for some time to come. Now to the fun part – the speeds on the system are simply phenomenal. I have G-fiber gigabit speed to the house and I have now doubled my download and upload speeds – download went from 450 to 900 and upload went from 260 to 550. My home is roughly 3000sq ft and there is not one dead spot. I can connect to this system from the end of my cul de sac which is about a football field length away. Simply stellar product! The only negative to this – and this is just personal choice – I wish it was sold in black as the white units simply don’t blend with anything you put them on – very few people have white furniture.I cannot recommend this system highly enough!

For the amount of money this cost, I wanted to be able to micro-manage every detail, but this is not the case. Even if there were the option to, they'd probably charge a subscription fee for it.- Starting in April 2023 I started seeing random drops on certain devices - noticeable especially when downloading, where I would see "network failure" and pressing "resume" would continue the download, until it failed again - rinse and repeat until the download actually finished. On my PS5 I am seeing my network status sometimes show as "Unknown" and logging out/back in again sometimes fixes it, but usually does not. I have to restart the router and then it will work correctly, for under a day - so it is a daily routine.- Switching back to my old, Google mesh wifi system immediately resolved my issues mentioned above

The Perfect Setup for 1+Gb Internet Speed
29 October 2022

The Eero Pro 6e is the perfect mesh system for high end internet speeds of 1+ gigs and anyone looking for a user friendly Wifi setup. This is my first time using an Eero product and I’ve been very impressed. I’ve always used Linksys routers in the past and had a mesh system with them in place before I received the Eero Pro 6e system. The Linksys system was always bit of a pain to setup, the steps seemed easy enough but sometimes it would take multiple attempts for the different nodes to connect to the system. With the Eero I didn’t have any of those problems whatsoever. Setup took less then 15 minutes and was so simple I believe my 70 year old mother could have been able to setup this product and she’s SUPER tech challenged. Setup took less then 15 minutes and was so simple I believe my 70 year old mother could have been able to setup this product and she’s SUPER tech challenged. The Eero’s came packaged in a sleek box and the nodes themselves are small, compact and sleek looking. Each unit has 2 ethernet connections so if you have devices that you want to hard wire in that is possible. Initial speed tests showed me getting over 900mbps throughout my entire home which is a huge upgrade considering my last system was only getting about 500-600 even though we have 1 gigabit AT&T fiber. I was able to even get those speeds sitting outside my home which is very useful if we want to maybe stream to devices outside when we have people over to watch football games. The Eero app is user friendly and has a host of cool features but unfortunately some of them are only accessible through the $99 dollar subscription program they have. With Eero Plus You can create profiles if you want to control what kind of sites or apps your children are able to access. You can see historical data and use DDNS features as well as Ad blocking and VIP support. One free feature that I found very useful is being able to dim or completely turn off the status light on the Nodes themselves. I know it sounds silly but my TV sits across from our bed in our master bedroom and there’s a small white light similar to the Eero status lights that I cover up almost every night so its not beaming at me like a headlight. There are some more advanced features that are free like Port Forwarding and DHCP & NAT. But I admittedly probably won't use those features very much, but I'm glad they're available.Overall I am very happy with the Eero 6e Pro system. It finally allows us to hit gigabit speeds throughout the home while being user friendly and super easy to setup. I highly recommend it.

With 3 units, everything is packaged very neatly inside the box so you can grab one at a time and go through the setup process with each. The first step is getting the app and setting up an Eero account. Then follow directions for adding a router to your home network. It’ll guide you through the steps of disconnecting your old router and connecting your new one to your modem. Once complete, you can then use the app to set up additional units providing a wide range of wifi coverage across your home or property. My modem fairly centered to the living room but I wanted to expand wifi out to my front yard and garage. When adding the additional access points, I didn’t have any connection problems and was able to get good signal putting one in my bedroom (using only wireless internet connections and a power cable) and another in my garage. I didn’t want to fall back on my wireless connection while looking up how-to videos in my garage, so this was ideal. This is what I call an “app managed” router. This seems to be a more popular approach, but it simplifies the setup and management process for those who are not quite as savvy with adjusting technical settings of their home network. This is a plus and a minus in my book. On one hand, it makes things much easier for the majority of people, on the other hand, it also restricts you from fine tuning your network to your liking or wireless environment. With that being said, it’s very easy to see what is connected to your router as well as the ability to group different items to make parental controls and monitoring a walk in the park.I made a completely new network with the setup of this router so I could add each item one by one and group them based on function or type. For example, smart home devices, PCs, and personal devices (phones, tablets, watches) all got grouped in their respective categories. Although I do not have kids, I could see where this would be useful if you wanted to create groups for individual children for game consoles or phones to limit screen time.As for customization, it doesn’t leave you completely in the dark. You can still do, what I now consider a standard features, port forwarding and DHCP reservations. You can also adjust your DNS server, turn on or off your UPnP, as well as a feature called client steering which makes sure you’re on the router with the strongest signal and therefore likely the fastest connection. There’s also “Thread”, which is a low power wireless standard that devices can connect to. The device also has Zigbee built in so if you’re Smart home is built on this standard, you can use the eero as a hub.Performance seems right in line with what I expect with a clean 6ghz wireless signal. My PC which is one of my few 6e devices, negotiates at 2.1 gbps at the highest, but averages around 1.2 to 1.4 gbps. This is, on paper, FASTER than a wired connection. The reality is, depending on if your device is WiFi 6e capable and distance to your router, you may or may not see those speeds. BUT I will say, using fast.com to test my speeds, under the best conditions, I was hitting my advertised speeds (1 Gig Fiber) from my ISP which is very impressive considering I’ve only seen these speeds under wired connection (940 download and 800 upload on Eero wireless router). As for local network file transfers, well I have a windows PC as a server, and lets say SMB isn’t the fastest file transfer protocol, but I transferred a file across the network at 74 MB/s average. This was from a NVMe drive to a HDD, which is a common setup for network file backup.Another added bonus is if you want to wire your devices to the access points, each one comes with 2 ethernet ports. If you have a device that’s ethernet only or want to spread out wired devices so it doesn’t crowd the desk, this makes that convenient. The biggest downfall of this router is the subscription based parental controls and monitoring. Instead of building these into the product like other routers, eero has opted to get a few more bucks out of you by charging $99.99/year for these features. You don’t have to make the purchase, and the router works fine without them, but there are routers available that include this in their purchase price without a subscription.Another thing I would have liked to have seen would have been a QoS feature where I can prioritize traffic on the network by device. This is great for streaming or gaming devices where it’s network traffic is important to be prioritized to sustain the quality of picture and latency. It’s hard to see this labeled as “Pro” and not have some of these features. Hopefully this can be added in the future with a firmware update. All things said, I’m happy with this product, but there’s room for improvement. I have no complaints about the setup process, performance, or coverage. If you don’t have a technical savvy person in your home but need the coverage, you’ll find this is easy to setup, deploy and enjoy.
