I put these heads on my Tama Starclassic B/B drums before I really knew what sound I was going for and they immediately replaced the factory G1 clears that were on the bottom. Now, as a great standard reso head, the G1 is already the go to head for many, including me. But I've found with this head on my toms, sized 8", 10", 12" and 16" diameters, they all speak clearly and with an open tone and get out of the way. This innovation reminds me of comparing a fast crash to a standard crash. You still get the initial attack, power and a pure tone when you hit it, but the fast aspect creates a sooner decay like a smoothly tapered studio gate. And it's not a dead shortened ring like the hydraulics create on some toms. For me these heads are great and I've got nothing but ... For me these heads are great and I've got nothing but compliments on my drum's tuning and the sound of these in recordings is amazing, just controlled enough to require little editing. Lastly, batter heads are an important factor so I will mention that mine are UV1s, a great combo with these resos and while I did first miss some of the open depth of my stock G2s over G1s, I feel the warmth and controlled sustain brings the best out of my drums in a way that those original clear heads, muffled or not, can't. Bottom line, this is another excellent Evan's product worth a try, with the proper tuning you won't be disappointed.

Who would think a coated 14mil head would be a good reso? These were designed as batters, and they're great for sound and durability, but the thickness also allows them to resonate longer. The coating tames the tone a bit, so it's a mellow resonance, not boingy. I'm using a clear EC2 as the batter on a thinnish shell (maple/cherry Neusonic) and the combination of those 'heavy' heads is just right!

I've used Remos my whole life, but tried Evans heads for the first time last Feb when I treated myself to a new drum kit. Evans is all I'll consider now.The Level 360 technology really makes a huge difference. With Remos or Aquarians (which sound great too), I always have a wrinkled area by a lug, and tuning takes a long time. The Evans are simple: 1) Seat, 2) finger tighten and (for toms) 3) turn each lug half a turn beyond finger tight - the drum is in perfect tune with itself; 4) tweak up to suit. The coating on these heads is something else. The Remo coatings wear through and you have a clear spot in the head within a couple of weeks. I play these drums with the G12s nearly every day, and have had the heads on for seven months. Though there is a dirty spot in the center of them, all of the coating remains intact. The G12 is 12 mils thick as opposed to the G1, which is 10 mils thick. This slightly lowers the fundamental tone, but still gives the characteristics of a thin, single ply head. These heads sound low, full (they have great sustain - I've got Gauger RIMS on the mounted, and isolation feet on the floor, not muffling to get the most out of the sustain), warm, and "round" with just the right amount of attack for smaller venues. One thing I've learned over the years is that the heads used must be determined in large part by the sticks used. These heads require light sticks. 7As are about the upper limit for them, with Vic Firth 5AJs and Regal Tip Combos making them sound really sweet. If you use a 5A or larger you probably want to look at the G2s. If you use something with a "B" in it, you probably want to look at the Evans EC2s.Over the years, I have come to realize that you can overdrive a head with too-heavy-a-stick, much as you can overdrive a woofer with too-powerful-an-amp.If you need to keep the volume under control, and you use or are willing to switch to light sticks, these heads will make your drums sound amazing when you tune 'em to the sweet spot. The head/stick combo works for everything from Steely Dan to Dixieland, to Deep Purple (played at a volume that leaves your hearing intact).

I had seen many drummers using these heads and loved the way they sounded. But all heads can sound good under perfect conditions and state of the art recording gear, so I thought I would try them. They sound great to my ears! The drums opened up and have a great tone and sustain. Tuned up very easily and also have a range of tuning that many heads can't achieve. I have them at a medium tension for a rock/funk/country sound. A half or three quarter turn on each lug gives the perfect jazz tuning. These are single ply heads, so my only concern is durability. I have only had them on for a few weeks and so far no pitting or dents. Time will tell. I'm very happy with the sound as they are probably the most musical sounding heads I have ever played. You get maximum volume, punch, overtones, etc. I have changed all batter heads to the UV1. I love it for the versatility, You have several easy things you can do for overtones and all other adjectives. You have a variety of things you can quickly do to alter for the room, mood your in. With a pillow, moon gel, wash cloth...you name it. If you like the booming Bonham sound, heavy muffling is not what you want. If you like the Bonham sound, use muffling sparingly. And if you use it, make sure it is easily changed or removed. We make alot about adjusting to the room and environment but the reality is your mood is probably the biggest variable. Give your self room to adjust. The UV1 gives you the best versatility using all of the tools in your tool box.
Great durable head. Even though this head is thick, it still plays and sounds like it is a thinner head. The sound has higher overtones than what I anticipated, not as muffled as expected. Overall great sound, but did not have as low of a tone, fat, or low- end rumble as I believed it would have initially. Little too pingy for my taste when it comes to a floor tom, but once again, a really good product.
56 year veteran drummer, retired but still playing at home. The big pro is the coating that shows no marking after several hours of play and will last who knows how long. Note that the part of the head that contacts the bearing edge under tension is clear. The most immediate cons are (1) the exorbitant price and (2) how thick they feel and sound, more like at least a G2 coated with G1 clear resonant heads on my DWs. I realize I'm probably out of touch with what's the "in" thing nowadays. I never had close-field miking even in large venues and never spent hours upon hours recording on my computer, etc. With my experience, I would only possibly recommend these for recording. Yes I've been on quite a few.
Great heads. Provides just the right amount of fat, wet sound while preserving a degree of attack and tuneabiliy for rebound to still be able to execute fast precision fills and beats. Fantastically amazing on both my my Tama Superstars! Also, don't forget to tune up your kit every 6 months depending on wear and replace heads-it's like washing a filthy dirty bug encrusted windshield...it gives you a whole new and improved outlook on your drums and life.
I bought this head for a 6.5 x 14 black beauty. I had used a Remo Emperor X on it, mostly for a fat rock backbeat. These heads (Emperor X and heavyweight) are thick, so your articulation for double strokes and things are affected somewhat. I liked the Emperor X, but I was intrigued about the Evans equivalent after reading somewhere that the Evans head sounded less "throaty" than an Emperor X. I know what the person was talking about with the "throaty" description. Both heads are very similar in sound, but the Evans does sound ( to me ) more like a 2 ply head with less of that mid-rangey, throaty tonality. Please be aware that thicker heads like these don't really come alive until the head is tightened up in the mid to high mid range. It will sound tubby and kind of ... Please be aware that thicker heads like these don't really come alive until the head is tightened up in the mid to high mid range. It will sound tubby and kind of flat at lower tunings. For a powerful, fat backbeat, I think this head sounds a little better than an Emperor X and closer to the sound of a coated 2 ply head. The durability is great and the coating lasts longer than Remo's. This head sounds great on my brass shell black beauty and there is no need to muffle it. It leaves just enough of the resonance of the shell to sound powerful and pop. I can only speak of how this drum works on a brass shell. I'm not sure I would use it on a wooden shell or on a snare drum that wasn't very resonant. Anyway, it works well for me and I'll probably lean toward this head over an Emperor X in the future.
I've been using Evans heads for many years now and love them. I've also used Sam Ash for several orders and had no issues, until now. This particular Evans 8" batter head was streaked/smeared. It was just a hair shy of being "scored" w/ some of the white coating almost removed. I'm not sure how it got into this shape. Possibly during shipping by the courier? Or maybe at Evans (hopefully not) or at Sam Ash while packing/shipping. The head is still functional, it is just not aesthetically pleasing.
