Evolvs best-selling shoe for even more crushing. Defy everything The Defy one of Evolvs best-selling climbing shoes and a great all-rounder. It has gone through several technical upgrades over time making it an even greater choice for beginners all the way to advanced climbers. An anatomical design provides great out-of-the-box fit and comfort. A synthetic upper will keep the shoe from overly stretching and a nice padded and breathable tongue adds a functional and comfortable surface for the two velcro tabs to wrap around. Evolv have also built in an anti-microbial mesh material known as Agion to eliminate odour and bacteria build-up. The Defy retains Evolvs VTR Variable Thickness Rand technology. VTR makes the toe rand in differing thicknesses. Basically, high-wear zones are thicker and more durable than other areas. This enhances the toe box structure and prevents toe bulge. It also means that there less waste during the manufacturing process so its better for the environmentThe Defy technical enough to smear along slabby terrain or grip an overhang, and comfortable enough for a day climbing indoors, or a multi-pitch epic. Overall, a great shoe that will stay comfortable from the first time you put them on but still let you climb hard.

Awesome for smearing. But STINK!

As an intermediate climber I can say these are some of my favorite shoes. Fit: I wear a size 9 - 9.5 running shoe in Asics, Brooks or Nike and the size 9 in these is perfect. It fits a little tight until the material breaks in and then it's a glove for your foot. That is how climbing shoes should fit. PROS: I like to smear a lot even in places where other climbers think you can't. These are the absolute best for that. As an intro shoe they are comfortable and can be worn all day. The rubber is super soft so it gets really good grip on any surfaces. These shoe stick to the wall better than some of my $200 shoes. Because they are flat instead of cambered you can use the ball of your foot or switch to inside of toe really easily instead of just toe poking the wall all ... MoreAs an intermediate climber I can say these are some of my favorite shoes. CONS: The soft rubber also means that i wear these out after about a year and the soft rubber means edging is harder to do. Not impossible but not what the shoe is best at. The Stink! These shoes smell bad. They call the line anti odor but that is the worst misnomer in history. The liner traps in sweat. None of my other shoes smell like this. I have to spray them with disinfectant after every climb.

Comfortable Gym Shoe

I bought this pair of shoes in the search for gym shoes that didn't leave my feet feeling crippled by the end of a session. The Defy's fit nicely and are especially kind to my wider feet. The toe box is exceptionally comfortable. I wear roughly a 10.5 to 11 in street shoes, and I went with an 11.5 for these shoes (I was wearing a pair of older Geshidos, also Evolv, at 11.5 and they were a bit aggressive on the fit) and they seem to be perfect. They may not be the highest performing shoe out there, but they do seem to toe and heel hook just fine, though when your feet start sweating they may get a bit loose and require a bit more tightening (for which the velcro works great). Overall, these are a decent shoe at a great price!

Great grip! Pointed, flat bottom toe makes it easy to get into crevices. Heel is great, can easily hang from most holds. Used on indoor bouldering mostly.

Good for skinny feet, better for big feet.
12 February 2020

Me and my friend both bought this shoe. He’s a 13 im climbing shoe with a long skinny foot. He loves the shoes cause the tight around his foot way better than others without to much bubble-ing cause he had a skinny foot. The only thing that gets in his way is the excess. This is why I like my foot is “bigger,” my foot fits really snug in this shoe toe to heel. The heel rubber make it very comfortable to heel hook and the soles edge is thick and sharp, while still being flexible with a break-in.Over all out of the 3 neutral climbing shoes I bought, this one is very comfortable For me along side the lace tarantulas. Which I would also highly recommend.

Great beginner climbing shoe
31 March 2022

I bought this instead of using gym rentals and been hitting the gym with them regularly for a few months. I have not used outside yet but seem like they will be fine there as well. A great shoe that didn't break the budget. I'm sure it's possible to outgrow the capabilities of this shoe skill wise, but I'm not even close yet so I keep rocking them. I can even smear this on the wall and get enough traction to get my next hold in difficult stretches.

Perfect for what they are.
26 November 2023

I use them nearly daily at the gym and on longer easy routes. They are not techy but they are precise for a comfortable shoe and I’ve been through about 5 pairs in my life. Several have been resoled and given me a few years before they died. I have other shoes for hard sport routes or thin cracks but if you want to hang out and crag all day on moderates these are perfect for what they are.

Quick Guide To Find Size For You
3 July 2023

First timer buying climbing shoes and well I learned a quick lesson after ordering my first pair, they run small (very small) and each brand is very different. So please NOTE * I did not use this pair to climb in but only to find a pair that fit. Needless to say, I wear a size 8 in women's consistently and ordered a half size up (8.5) which is a 7.5 in mens and it was still too snug. I'd recommend ordering 1 full size up. A size 9 in women's would have probably been ideal. On backcountry's site this is considered a "unisex" shoe which uses men's sizing. I hope this helps.

Shoes are fine, Sizing is off
23 June 2022

These shoes perform absolutely fine given their intended use/demographic, but it seems to me that Evolv is dealing with some sizing discrepancies that I would like to see sorted out.The TL;DR here: I wear a Men's 11 in virtually all street shoes, but in this shoe I wear a size Men's 13 (out of the box, toes touching the ends but not quite curled over). If you are looking for shoes that fit similarly, my suggestions are as follows:For your size in Women's street shoes, go with the same size or 1/2 a size up from what is listed as the Men's size on the Evolv Defy. For your size in Men's street shoes, go 1.5 to 2 sizes bigger than what is listed as the Men's size on the Evolv Defy.COMPLETELY ignore the EU and UK sizes.Compared to the Evolv Titan, this shoe is ... MoreThese shoes perform absolutely fine given their intended use/demographic, but it seems to me that Evolv is dealing with some sizing discrepancies that I would like to see sorted out.The TL;DR here: I wear a Men's 11 in virtually all street shoes, but in this shoe I wear a size Men's 13 (out of the box, toes touching the ends but not quite curled over). It seems to me that what's listed on this shoe as the men's size should actually be the Women's size, and that the true Men's size is actually 1.5 sizes larger. Personally, I size up by 0.5 from my street shoe in the Evolv Titan, so I had to up 2 full sizes in the Defy.Evolv, please fix your sizing! Try these shoes on and give us some logical numbers to go off of!

Sticky rubber, works on real rock
12 April 2022

Really good. Sticky rubber, very sticky. Heel is locked in there. Toe box is kind of tall so if you went small you could get some toe bend to make these kind of downturn-ey, but overall really good.I climbed on sandstone, limestone, and basalt on these and they work pretty well.Much better than La Sportiva Oxygyms which were my old shoe. I prefer these much more.'I got these true-to-size 9.5 and they felt pretty darn snug, given that my left foot is like 0.2 inches longer than my right ugh

Versatile, beginner and intermediate friendly, comfortable
7 July 2024

I bought this shoe a year ago. This was my very first pair of climbing shoes when I got into climbing. They’re a great beginner and intermediate level shoe and fairly priced. They’re comfortable, moderately stiff on the midsole but do bend easily around the toe box. I would say evolv has strange sizing. I’m a size 10US street size and for these I had to get an 11US (Note: I was a brand new climber and the size 10 felt far to uncomfortable at that time. size 11 allowed my toes to touch the end without curling too much). If I had the knowledge about climbing shoes that I do now I would match my street size of 10US and just wait out the discomfort until the shoe stretched a bit (stretches about a half size up). Once you break them in they’re very comfortable and they have kind of a slipper feel to them.I would say this is a great pair of versatile climbing shoes. They’re pretty decent on volumes though I do slip and slide at times. They’re also descent on edges however they do sometimes struggle on VERY small edges. Toe hooking has been difficult in these because there is no toe patch but heel hooking has been pretty good. it’s a decent all around shoe. They got me to climb my first v4-v5 boulder and 5.11 top rope climb and have done me well. You can definetly use these outdoors if you needed too and i’ve completed some urban traversals on them (Thicker brick wall traversal). After the year of use they are showing slight wear but honestly not much. I would most likely resole these and keep them as warmup shoes or days when i’m not tackling any hard problems. All in all, great beginner to intermediate shoe if you are starting out and still learning.
