I started my "grandfather" shaving experience with a less expensive double-edge safety razor and blades -- it was a good experience, but I was still prone to a lot more nicking and not quite as close a shave as I wanted. Then I heard about the Feather equipment, saw it, and decided to try it out. The difference was amazing! The Feather razor and Feather blades made for a much smoother shave, faster, with less nicks. I've been using this daily for months and still I am very happy, overall. There is a minor bit of rusting occurring inside where the blade sits, which is less than ideal, but otherwise I couldn't be happier. Definitely pair it with Feather blades as well --- they last a day longer than the cheaper brands and lead to a better shave overall, while still ... MoreI started my "grandfather" shaving experience with a less expensive double-edge safety razor and blades -- it was a good experience, but I was still prone to a lot more nicking and not quite as close a shave as I wanted. To finish, the L'Occitane Cade balm. The ultimate grandfather shaving experience short of going to a straightedge!

About a year ago I purchased a Feather AS-D2 on a drop and have used it since. I am normally a frugal guy but don't regret the purchase. I used a straight razor for a decade, but the AS-D2 is smooth and nick free like a Gillette Fusion at a fraction of the cost and I can get a very close shave almost like a straight razor at a fraction of the cost. I like the Kai blades. They are similar to the Feather blades but last longer and are a bit smoother with less nicks. As far as value goes, yes their are other great razors. I have an Edwin Jagger. It never gets used. Compared with the reusable plastic double edge razors made by Gillette and Lord that I used in the Philippines the Edwin Jagger is very expensive. They also work great when paired with a decent blade. They cost about 35 or 40 cents including a blade. The bonus is they are super fast to change the blade or clean. If ultimate frugal is your goal they can't be beat. If a fabulous piece of kit that gives smooth, close shaves (for many people) the Feather AS-D2 is tough to beat. For me the improvement in shave quality from the plastic Gillette to the Edwin Jagger is not as great as from the Edwin Jagger to the Feather AS-D2.

Love the AS-D2. The shaves are silky smooth, not super aggressive, but I have light beard growth, so it works well for me. Weight is good, build quality is fantastic. I combine it with Gilette 7 o'clock Green blades, and Rocky Mountain Barber Company Sandalwood shave cream, and Nivea Sensitive aftershave balm. Very happy with the purchase - Thank you Kent of Inglewood👍😁

Amazing Razor
30 July 2021

I've had a couple of decent quality DE safety razors from Edwin Jagger. The threads on the top piece of one of them recently wore out. It's actually the second time that they wore out, the first time it was replaced under Edwin Jaggers warranty. Researching for a replacement I noticed that many of the 'high end' razors are made of a chrome plated metal combination called ZAMAK (Zirconium, Aluminum, Magnesium, and Copper spelled in a German way with a K). ZAMAK is decent when well plated but it is not nearly as indestructible as stainless steel, not to mention the surgical grade of stainless steel (316) like the Feather AS-D2. ZAMAK is decent when well plated but it is not nearly as indestructible as stainless steel, not to mention the surgical grade of stainless steel (316) like the Feather AS-D2. The metal quality was the first drawing card. Second, for years I have preferred Feather blades, I have fairly sensitive skin and found that my face reacted to many of the other blades I tried. I thought, if Feather makes such good blades, I'm sure their razor will be great quality too. It really is. It is very nicely balanced, holds the blade more securely than any other razor I've seen. It is a very fine feeling and looking tool. But even better is the way that it works. I honestly couldn't believe my first shave with this razor. It is very, very smooth. It is extremely 'mild' as the reviewers often point out. I get a close shave but I almost have to remind myself that I am. Sometimes initially, I had to check that the hair was really gone. I have a few extra sensitive areas where I could never shave against the grain (which I like to do for my final pass). I actually resorted to plucking the area beside my lips where some men might grow a handlebar mustache because I was constantly getting little bleeding nicks there. A few weeks in and I haven't had one cut there. I can shave against the grain with no problem (on my third pass of course). It almost feels like I couldn't cut myself with this razor if I tried. I found it took a little bit of practice to find the right angle and the right amount of pressure to use. But once I figured that out I was good to go. I am thrilled with this razor and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to invest in a DE razor. I would rather buy and use one of these for 30–40 years that buy and use 4 or 5 Edwin Jagger or Merkur over the same period. Hope that helps.

Best Razor on the Market

Wow, this razor is absolutely worth every penny! I consistently get an amazing shave that’s effective, and aggressive enough without being too harsh. It’s designed to be paired with a Feather blade, which uses the sharpness of the blade to its advantage but providing a bit more protection in the razor. Some claim it’s a mild razor, however I would have to argue it’s more medium, when used with a Feather blade. The quality of the craftsmanship it’s utterly flawless. It’s made with 316 stainless steel so it’ll absolutely last a lifetime. This razor is the last razor you’ll need to purchase. Great for heavy beard growth or even everyday shaving!

Fantastic razor!

I never write reviews, but this time I had to take a moment because I spent so much time reading everyone else’s reviews and unsure whether I should spent this much money on a DE razor. I have plenty of others, most of the time with the Merkur 34c, or my Supply 2.0 single edge, both of which I really like. But this Feather AS-D2 is in another league altogether. I’m using Feather blades and barely even can detect the blade as it glides so smoothly in this razor, the closest shave I’ve ever experienced. The first try, no weepers, no cuts, no irritation of any kind. Even though we are talking about only 3 pieces of steal here…the way it is engineered and made so precisely is what makes it extremely efficient. I always did 3 passes, but 1 pass is pretty much all I need for a daily morning shave (I’ll still do 2 passes, no need to waste the lather). I see people saying it is mild, yes that’s true but it is very efficient, really the easiest DE safety razor I’ve used with the closest shave and the highest quality. If I grow my short beard back, I’ll probably use the Supply single edge with the aggressive plate when I cut it off, but other than that all my razors are under the sink and this Feather is my every day razor. Yes its expensive, but worth it if you want high quality, long lasting, super close shave, and no irritation.

My last razor
10 June 2021

After years of trying different razors, I have now settled on the Feather AS-D2 for good. I shave daily and prefer a mild razor. This is by far the best I have ever encountered. There are many small nice details to the razor: The vents in the head allow shaving cream to push through, the blade is held by securely so it stays parallel to the comb and the design tends to protect the blade from scraping your skin. I also very much like the stand which holds the razor upright. So far, I have tried it with feather and persona blades, both of which work well.

My number one safety razor

I absolutely love this razor. It did take me a couple of weeks to really get use to it but once I did I have had a super smooth shave each time. The AS-D2 has relegated my Henson AL13 to a shelf under the bathroom sink (The Henson is still an amazing safety razor in my opinion). I do find that the Feather razor works best with Feather blades, but my Astra blades do a very good job as well.

The Feather AS-D2 is the best double edge razor (Or any type razor) I have ever used. I’m 64 and shave 5 days a week...2 passes each time. This razor with the feather blade using quality pre shave...shave soap...and after-shave stand at the pinnacle of shaving. I’m In Pittsburgh and have a deep appreciation of metals...this stainless steel razor is quality craftsmanship with superb balance and weight. The aggressiveness is spot on for daily shavers...and the cap and head conceal the blade entirely (corners) to prevent nicks from various angles. Bottom line: I wanted a one and done razor. Mission accomplished. If I would lose this razor I would order another one the next day. Do yourself a favor and get this razor (And Simpson Chubby) and never look back..you will ... MoreThe Feather AS-D2 is the best double edge razor (Or any type razor) I have ever used. Superb craftsmanship and a clean gentle shave.

I'm very impressed with the machining, fit and finish of the razor. It feels great in the hand, and after two months of regular use it still looks like it did straight out of the box. Definitely worth getting the edition that includes the stand. The shave quality is also great. Compared to my more generic butterfly safety razor I feel less of the blade but it is capable of a much closer shave. I have to be pretty careless to cut myself with the razor, and absentmindedness is actually more likely to result in a pass of the blade that doesn't cut anything, and because the feeling is so gentle it won't feel obvious that I missed. I got this razor because I've been using Feather blades for 10+ years. It holds them perfectly and I think this is the key to being able to get a close shave even as the razor feels like it's gliding across your skin. My only gripe is that it's a little harder to get to the area right under my nose than it was with my other razor.
