I still love this guitar, it has great tone, and the Fender designed bevels in the body make any Strat much more comfortable than many guitars out there. Included with that advantage is a lighter weight than a Gibson Les Paul. I used to use the heavy strings like SRV, but age, stiffness and less frequent guitar playing pushed me to go to lighter gauges. Still, you can't beat the Texas Special pickups tone with heavier strings, but it still sounds great with lighter gauges. I still want to play it, but for the reasons stated have been playing bass instead as it is easier on the hands. That's not the guitar's fault. I own a Mexican made Strat with an HSS pickup arrangement that I like for different reasons, but although it's action is lower, it doesn't have that SRV ... I only play with a band once weekly, so the durability isn't in question, although my SRV strat has held up just fine. As for the vintage style string tuners, they aren't too much of a challenge once you know how to do a string change. There is a good video on YouTube if you search out "How to Restring Fender Vintage Tuners". It's not rocket science, but a few details help a lot. Another slight annoyance is the truss rod adjustment. It's done vintage style also, so you have to remove the neck to get to it, a very inconvenient situation. However, if you get the guitar set up done by a good guitar tech, you shouldn't have to deal with it once it's set to your liking. I really want to play this guitar more even after all these years. I'm looking to learn fingerstyle picking. I just love finding a video or concert on Sattelite TV and playing along. To me, Strats are king.

Absolutely beautiful guitar and looked flawless.... but center pickup was not working and the selector switch was very loose. I just had to send it back. Musicians Friend support was awesome and understanding why I wanted to just send it back. I wish this had worked out as I had gotten a great deal on this.

I lucked into mine, was actually looking for a Jimmy Vaughan Strat when this beauty fell into my lap. Technically mine is a partscaster (a 97 body with an 01 neck) though I can't imagine that makes any difference. The neck is fantastic, I have medium to small hands and my thumb gets over just fine. Very fast and comfortable. I love the large frets, the flat radius, the pao ferro, it's all just perfect together. To my ear, this guitar has the best tone and sustain of any Strat I've ever played. The fit and finish is custom shop worthy, definitely a cut above your run of the mill American standard. The Texas specials are great but I threw in some muy grandes from rio vista and couldn't be happier (they're very similar to the ts' just wound a bit hotter). I also ... I also swapped out all the white plastic for black and ditched the garish srv pickgaurd for a regular black 3 ply but to each his own. The only thing I'm not too crazy about is the trem bar, for me its right where my palm wants to rest but I can live with it. My next and last Fender will be a custom shop piece exactly like this one except with a righty tremelo and a custom paint job. Buy it now...

I got this guitar in a very timely manner by Musician's Friend, and at first I was really let down. The reason being, I had never had a guitar with 8 screws so my pickguard was "lipped" up off the guitar on almost all the ends, but I contacted Musician's Friend and they're sending me a new pickguard so I'm not so upset about that. The setup was absolutely vital in order for this guitar to work for me, which prior to, had a high end, ugly, undefined sound that reminded me nothing of SRV. So, firstly I put in raw vintage springs and put the bridge back on the body. I had fiddled with the pickups and tried to get a good sound but was kind of unhappy, I felt like there was no body to speak of in the sound, but still better than when the bridge was not tightened against ... I had fiddled with the pickups and tried to get a good sound but was kind of unhappy, I felt like there was no body to speak of in the sound, but still better than when the bridge was not tightened against the body. So I ended up checking the string height and saw that the strings were not to spec (4/64) in a couple of odd places like the A-B strings, which were higher than both e strings. So I lowered those middle strings to be to spec, and to my utter surprise, that was what helped more than anything. The frequencies felt like they had "rested" and the guitar was noticeably darker, while at the same time having much better harmonic content. Now that I could feel and hear the frequencies naturally sounding in place, I was able to find a sweet spot with the pickup height. Without hardly trying the guitar would absolutely scream when popping the strings, but were mellow enough now to sound pleasing clean, in fact I quite like the clean sound now. That said, the guitar is inherently very defined and articulate, so hot pickups like texas specials in this guitar could be a recipe for disaster if not setup right, it's important to know what you want the guitar to sound like and to not be afraid to measure and put to fender spec, if that's your preference. In my case it worked out extremely favorably. I was extremely upset at first when I got this guitar, but with some love I found the guitar sings beautifully.
The 1994 SRV Strat I had was so good, I traded it for a new one. This 2016 one has a bridge too wide for the neck. So after playing it for a few hours, the bottom string won't stay on the fret board. You cannot play it. and the luthier can't fix it! And Fender says its just fine! Well, FENDER, its under warranty and they better replace it or fix it or FENDER just soiled their BRAND. I'll be back after I talk to FENDER myself and advise how they handled such a disaster. Lets hope they live up to their obligations.
I probably have one of the first SRVs since I bought it back in germany right after it came out. This must be at least 15 years ago or so. There's not much more to say than I still love this guitar better than any otehr else. During the last 6-7 years I can honestly say it even gets better every year - probably due to the fine wood selection. I really like evrything about it - although I have replaced the bridge pickup to have a less brighter sound for distortion rhythm stuff. It's not that I didn't like the Texas Special on the bridge - it just didn't match very well with the cover band I have been playing some harder rock stuff. This way I coud use this guitar for everything. The neck pickup blows you away even with high gain settings. The best lead sound you can ... Forget all this crappy modern strat stuff. this is the real satisfaction. It's not true that you MUST have this guitar to get an SRV sound since Stevie sounded outstanding with every guitar. It's just a wonderful instrument and it reminds me of one of my all time heroes every time I look at it.
I've had my SRV Strat for a couple of years now, and I am not unhappy. This is an outstanding instrument that delivers a lot of tone. I've never been on a Stevie Ray tone search - I just want the tones that work for me. Boy does this deliver. The oval neck w/ vintage frets is comfortable, and allows you to really dig in and bend those strings. The overwound Texas Special pickups have a nice burn that can go directly to screaming, and back to mellow, while still maintaining it's general character. The lefty tremolo arm is easy to adjust to, and it is possible to palm mute, despite the position of the trem arm. Between this lovely, and my ash AST, I can get any sound I want. This guitar is worth every penny. 5 stars, easily.
I bought an open box for a nice discount. I was slightly underwhelmed. I did not like the reverse placement of the tremelo at all. The neck shape was very nice. The fit and finish was very nice. However, the high E string set on the very edge of the frets, so when you attempt to hold the string down it slips right off the fret. I sent the guitar back and got an American Professional Strat, which I am very happy with
Nothing bad to say at all. SRV is a legend that changed music for everybody. This strat is an excellent instrument that celebrates that. The Texas special pick ups can growl bright ear bleeding tones as well as the sweet tone of "Lenny". Beautiful finish. The neck takes a few minutes to get use to, but then it's on! Had mine since 2007. I love it and will pass it down to my son.
I've had my SRV for a week now. Found it at the GCtr in Tallahassee. Only 2nd one I've seen here. If you're into higher end strats, try this one. The jumbo frets are comfortable, the texas specials are bold, drive hard. Great coil tap. Beautiful wood and hardware. The trem system is great, nice return with a 10 gauge set up. The braz rosewood fingerboard lends to easier string bending. The vintage case is stunning tweed and orange interior. If you locate one try it my friends, you'll see.
