I purchased this light and a PD36r on a whim after someone told me about Fenix flshlights. I will admit after receiving i am very impressed. This light is a powerhouse of light. It is very simple to use and seems like very high quality, When i 1st attempted to try it out i went outside and lit up the flood light. I immediately had to turn it back off cause i was afraid i was going to wake up surrounding neighbors with the amount of light being thrown (it was like 1 am ). I took it into work the next night and played with it all over the place. The spot light was able to light up the top of an 800' stack while i was probably close to 1000' from the base. I was also able to light up the inside of the boiler brighter than 2- large LED pineapple lights and a few 13w led ... MoreI purchased this light and a PD36r on a whim after someone told me about Fenix flshlights. Overall i am 99% happy with this not so cheap flashlight. Now the things i dont like about this light. The first thing i found after purchasing that kinda upset me was the holster. It works great for a rent a cop that just stands around or casually walks an area, but if you are active, work where you may bend over or something of the sorts it is horrible. I had this light fall out of its holster 3 times on the first night before i realized its uselessness. I would have paid more for a poly holster similar to a pistol that can be carried horizontally or vertically with a positive retention lock since carrying it vertically causes the bigger head of the light to kinda press into your side. The 2nd thing i found is the batteries, It claims that in emergencies 1-4 18650's can be used. Well, that may be true if you have a certain type of 18650. I have no less than 40- 18650 batteries ranging from Nitecore, Efest, a few Samsung, and various others. All but 2 of my batteries (which were 2 from some ebay headlamp) are unable to create a connection so the light will power up( you can her them rattle inside). It seems you need 18650's with the button tops on the positive side and for 99% of my applications for 18650's i have not needed, It would be great for Fenix to make a sled that will hold 1-4 standard 18650's that we could use in place of the battery pack, or make a battery pack that can be charged externally,The 3rd thing is just kind of my opinion. I think there should be a lower setting on both the spot and the flood. I say this for 2 reasons. The first is that if i am in my tent or just need lighting enough to read and such the flood and spot are both too bright in their lowest settings. The second reason would be just to preserve battery life when you dont need more than say 5-10 lumens of light.I have no regrets for the most part since this is a great light. Just a few suggestions to Fenix to make this light MUCH more appealing for everyone.

I have needed a bright flashlight for some time. I wanted to use it to illuminate unlit mooring buoys, crab pots, fishing nets and docks when I take my boat out at night. In spotlight mode, this flashlight throws light very well and can illuminates distant hazards very well (out to several hundred feet). The flashlight is compact and most importantly remains at the highest brightness levels for 45 or more minutes. The The build quality is fantastic and the controls are very intuitive. So it has fit my needs perfectly. Also it has an IP68 waterproof rating. It probably wouldn't survive being dropped overboard, but I don't have to worry about it dying after being splashed or rained on.There are brighter flashlights on the market, but I didn't choose to buy them ... MoreI have needed a bright flashlight for some time. All in all I am very pleased with my Fenix.
I have had this light for almost two years now. It is the best and by far brightest flashlight I have ever owned. I have used this light on the job, on hunts, camping, and in the home for when we had rolling blackouts last year during the week long ice storm here in Texas. I have charged the light about 4 times since i got it.i let the power drain almost completely before I charge. I mostly use low setting to conserve on battery life. Best rechargeable light I have ever owned. I recommend fenix to anyone who depends on a flashlight on a regular basis for anything.
This is an amazing light! Fenix has consistently produced outstanding lights of all kinds that are tough enough for professional use, and are elegant in design. Having the option to go to flood, spot, or both is the best of both worlds. The flood light fills up everything in front of you like it's daylight, even the spotlight has a large spill that further lights up the area around you. It's also not as heavy as I thought it would be, and it feels good in the hand. I hope Fenix gives an option for battery upgrades in the future so that the light can be kept for many, many, years. I have a Fenix P3D from more than 22 years ago and it still works perfect, and I expect the same performance from this light, so please offer future upgrades.
I purchased the Fenix LR40R flashlight for tracking at night time. This light far surpasses anything I’ve had before. The spotlight and floodlight function adds versatility for nighttime tracking dogs. The discharge function is a great added feature when you’re not near a power source.Would definitely recommend to others to purchase.
Tried this light in several situations and it worked very well, very bright.I was mainly impressed by the flood, which was amazing but the spot or throw was pretty dam good. I did burn holes in two pockets but that was my fault, do be careful. I would say this is not an everyday carrying light for everyone but if you don't mind the bit of weight, an excellent carry light. Would recommend to everyone.
I am dnot a professional flashlight person. I do like flashlights and have a number of them about the house and on my person that might put me in the class of a collector. When I do a review I do not waste space listing lumens, an international standards. You can get all that from the dealers web page. I prefer to simply tell people what I think of the light and how it fits in my life. This LR40R was bought for a once in a lifetime combination of features most of which I will toss in at the bottom.. First there was me. I only have one light that even comes close to this thing in brightness and I wanted a solid well built high power light. This light is all those things. By now you are wondering why I only gave it 4 stars. I’ll come back to that.I have never been ... MoreI am dnot a professional flashlight person. First there was me. I only have one light that even comes close to this thing in brightness and I wanted a solid well built high power light. This light is all those things. By now you are wondering why I only gave it 4 stars. I’ll come back to that.I have never been disappointed by a Fenix product, and this one is no different in that respect. It has a nice clean design. It has a short “chubby” look being nominally 2 1/8” in diameter across the handle and right at 3 1/8” across the reflector, while being only about 6” long. I like those dimensions very much. When held in the hand it is not oppressively heavy, but it does have the feel of something solid and unbreakable. That is a nice feature since this is designed to be at your side under dangerous conditions. Having such a device in hand at those times relieves any concern that the equipment could fail when needed most. One of the reasons i chose this light over the LR50R was its power sources. The “power pack” for the LR40 is made out of 4 18650 li-ion batteries, but in time of need the light can be powered by 1-4 18650 batteries. I have not tested the light using anything other then the included power pack but it will be interested to see if the claim that it can run on a single 18650 battery is true. But my point is simply this. I have a ton of 18650 batteries. I did not want to get a light that could only use a custom power pack. This light fits well in the mix around here. I do like not having to disassemble the light to charge the batteries. The Fenix solution for this is a usb “C” port under a rubber cover on the light opposite the control switchs. There is also a standard USB port that serves as a power output for charging other devices you may have when an emergency hits. After all it won’t do any good to find victims of a tragedy if your cell phone is dead when you try to call for help. But for me that brings up another issue that I will describe when I get back to that missing star. This light very much like every flashlight out there these days in terms of “modes”. What is unique is that it is effectively two flashlights in a single housing. Looking at the reflector it is instantly obvious this is a different animal. There is a single deep cone shaped reflector I. The center with a single LED emitter. Placed in a ring around the outer edge of the reflector are another 18 emitters. The light has two switchs that control the light and modes. The one on the right controls that single emitter in the center, the switch on the left control the 18 around the outside. The center led is designed to provide a spot beam with good throw and the outer ring of leds provided a flood light function. Used together these produce a blinding light. In fact one learns very quickly not to turn up the heat on this light in small rooms indoors. Speaking of that this light will throttle back the intensity if it gets close to an object or it starts to get hot. As to that be careful this can get hot.So back to that missing star. I am not a fan of lights that must be disassembled for charging. But I have an equal distance for having holes with rubber seals cut into an otherwise leak proof light body. I am a big fan of magnetic chargers. Either inductive ones like cell phone chargers or and actual magnetic usb cord head to works through a port on the outside of the light. Since inductive charging has not shown up on flashlights in the general market I have come to look for magnetic usb charging. Now to be fair, Fenix has built an outstanding light here with outstanding features. Those features require lots of power. To charge these batteries one wants to be able to put as much power in the batteries in as short of time as possible. Usb “C” does that but it requires that hole in the flashlight body in mentioned I do not like. But that is not the only thing that stole a star from this light for me.There is a ton of hype surrounding this light. Mush of it is not put out there by Fenix, but that have done little to inject more realistic information into the mix. As a result, the expectation for this light is that it can throw a beam off that center emitter that can make a man cry out to around 400-500 meters. That kind of reporting g from reviewers and others can leave people with, the wrong impression as to how that translates to actual use. All of that is a blabby way of saying, this may not be as bright as you might expect. It certainly did not have the brightness I was lead to expect. Still very bright though and in The end there are not many places I need to throw light farther than 300 meters anyway. So for the combination of cutting a hole in my flashlight body and not have a center emitter that meets expectations built from the hype around the light, together these equal a star for my comments. The reason I finally decided to take the plunge on one of these serious and expensive lights it very simple. This particular light was listed in the Fenix “refurbished” section. So it started at a solid price reduction. I had just gotten a discount coupon from Fenix for a further 20% off. Then while I was deciding if I was going to pull the trigger, Fenix sent me mother coupon with another 15% off. All that plus free shipping. Clearly they had been watching me long enough to figure out what it would, take. I bought the light and have not looked back. But for anyone this light is a can do flashlight and I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow insanely bright light and super clean design with intuitive button layout. Also love the USB outbound charging for my other devices. This new addition is my third Fenix product in 2 years and every one has proven to be beautifully designed, machined, and absolutely bullet proof. I spend a lot of time outdoors off the grid and really depend on my lights and can’t afford any malfunctions which is why I selected this light. It literally turns the night into day. I have already turned two friends onto Fenix.
