Fluke - please coat the circuit board with varnish, bedding compound, etc. to protect it fro battery leakage. I've had several die because a AA cell leaked only a little.

I'm an Electrician and I carry this around with me everyday for work. Fluke makes the best voltage testers hands down. I personally love that the tone is loud enough I can walk to the other side of the house to find the right breaker its on.

Very easy to use. I am in the middle of rewiring my barn and needed to trace circuits and determine which wire was hot. This Fluke, like my meter, worked flawlessly.

I've had a few of these over the years. My last one lasted 3 years of heavy use in an industrial environment. Keep an eye on the batteries and replace as needed. If they leak, the acid ruins the circuitry. The 1AC II has the best range for the most common applications, 90v-600v. I wouldn't trust your life with it, but it's a good tool for quick troubleshooting. For actual electrical work, use a meter, wear PPE and always follow LOTO procedures.
This is my third of fourth Fluke non contact tester. I spent many years in factories and industrial settings of all kinds dealing with machinery. The tester is well designed and you know when you are around electricity with visual and audible alarms. Having been zapped a fair number of times, I always reach for my Fluke even when I know the circuit is "not active."
I've had this tester for 4 years and have tried to take good care of it. I use it within its designed purpose and it hasn't failed me yet with false negatives like other testers may. Finally a few months ago the clilp broke on it in the winter, I believe because it became brittle from the cold. Other reviewers mention the tip breaking off. I have been careful of this but I have seen others with the same tester have it happen.I won't use a different tester though, this one is in my opinion the best, functionally.
I use a Fluke meter at work to diagnose electrical systems on power equipment. One thing I've always loved and hated about fluke's is that they're very sensitive. This voltage detector is just like the rest of Fluke's line, and will definitely tell you if there's voltage ANY where near it. I was hoping to be able to use it to find a blown bulb on a small Christmas tree with pre-strung lights, but after an hour of trying different techniques just couldn't pinpoint the break. It will work as intended, to find out if you have hot wires in the wall or if you opened the correct breaker. But it's too sensitive to pinpoint a problem when all the wires are wrapped around a metal rod and the field is generating everywhere. Know what your looking to do and you application.
A strange operating system, but reliable. The continuous flashing when switched on and not in use (it has an auto timeout on this feature) is a bit disconcerting. However it becomes a steady light with a bleep when identifying a live power source. Previous other brands I have used only light up the 'pen' tip when sensing live power. Fine once you realise how the 'Fluke' works- and it appears not to give false indications.
I have tried many voltage detection tools over the 18 years of my career as an electrician (residential, industrial, commercial, maintenance), but Fluke makes the most accurate and durable one that I've ever used and I'll be sticking with it, since I bought my first one (earlier Fluke model) about 15 years ago. Many others are too sensitive and will light up as soon as it's inside of a junction box of live wires. With the Fluke 1AC, one can identify each live source with no problem; of course as voltage goes up, sensitivity does as well, but so it goes with any such tool. Some people complain about the tips breaking, but this has not been my experience, as I've dropped mine several times from about 3 feet, which has broken every other brand that I've bought.Being ... The light flashes in intervals when not near a live source to let you that it's working, which is quite handy; however, always test on a known live source first. This IS NOT A LIFE SAFETY TOOL, this is a great TROUBLESHOOTING TOOL. If you are looking to save time and be more efficient before using your meter, I would recommend the Fluke 1AC to do so. Just avoid hard impacts and change the batteries regularly and you'll have this tool for quite some time.
I do not know what the other reviewers problem was with this device but as an Electrician for over 25 years....I have owned the Same model and device for over 8 years....and it still works great. Might not beep as loud as it did from when it was new but it still does it's job.My advice is this...Testing 101 Check on a known live source (Say an outlet with a table lamp plugged in and on), check the circuit you are working on, then check the known source againOh and FYI...Many homes use low bid contractors who do not properly label Line Voltage conductors and on many times a switch leg could use a White (Neutral) to carry power and if it is not properly labeled, one might assume it is a Neutral. So test every single wire....White, Red, Black, Blue, Green....who ...
