Focal Clear MG Professional Open Back Headphones

Every so often I'm called to do a master while I'm away from the studio- I don't love being away from my room so I shot out a series of top of the line headphones to see where I could get consistent results- the Pro MG's were the clear winner! Great headphones

Awesome sound, but needed to return =(

I had 3 days since new and the left driver started to make very loud crackling metallic noises when volume 50% and above. Something very stange happened to that driver, I suppose it was a defective unit. I'm in the middle of the return/exchange process, I hope the second unit comes better (perfect, I would assume for this price)... Very unlucky....

Exceeded my expectations

Overall:When I purchase $1500 headphones I have extremely high expectations. Let me say that my expectations have been more than surpassed. I have only owned these headphones for a short time but here are my thoughts on them so far. Packaging - I love packaging. I mean I LOVE it. I have so many retail boxes stacked around my room it's insane. This packaging is fantastic. Every bit of it feels premium. Build Quality - I was very pleased when I took these out of the case. They feel very solid and well made. The metal is well machined. The leather (Pleather) feels super soft. The padding on the headband and ear pads is spongey yet firm which makes it very comfortable. Finding headphones that fit and are comfortable is extremely difficult. These fit my head like a glove. They are large enough and don't clamp my head like a vise. The earpads are large enough to accommodate large ears and don't get hot. Sound Quality - Let's face it this is why you spend this kind of money on headphones. It's all about the sound. Everything can almost be overlooked if they sound good enough and these do.I am not an audiophile. I lack the technical knowledge and vocabulary to convey the sound that comes out of these headphones but I'll do my best to give it a shot. Treble - The treble is detailed and articulate without being piercing or fatiguing. On 'So What' by Miles Davis the trumpet sounds like it's right next to you but it doesn't make your ears bleed or turn the volume down. Mids - The mids really shine on these headphones. They are warm and present without having to look for them. In 'Baby Plays Around' by Anne Sofie von Otter it sounds like she is singing in the room with you. It's breathtaking! Bass - For an open-back magnesium driver I was surprised how punchy the bass is. It's plenty for me anyway. On 'The Outsider' by A Perfect Circle, the electric bass is distinct and forward without overpowering the track. The bass drum is deep and rumbly. Accuracy - I feel like I can hear it all. In 'Waltz From Swan Lake' by Tchaikovsky the subtle strings are crystal clear and the whole orchestra feels fast and real. It's pretty magical. Dynamic Range - I feel like this puts it all together. In 'Tabula Rasa' by Arvo Pärt it just nails it on all fronts. The dynamics are just sensational. Conclusion - I think the highest praise I can give these headphones is they are worth every cent. I haven't regretted my purchase for a second. I have zero buyers remorse and I just want to have everyone listen to them so they can experience the same joy that I have! If you have the means to purchase these pricey headphones and may be on the fence, rest assured, these are on a whole different level. They are a game-changer, one you hear them you will have a hard time going back.

Excellent professional headphones for studio work

Solid, incredible sounding headphones. Excellent for mixing, tracking, mastering, without distortion. These can get loud without artifacts. Highly recommended - would purchase again.

Fabulous Focals

After using Sennheisers for the past 15 years or so, I wanted a change. Reviews on these monitors are very positive and I know Focal’s monitor speakers are held in very high regard. These are fabulous. Super transparent sound with a nice flat and balanced response. Build quality is excellent; they feel substantial and very comfortable. Would definitely recommend. The hard case they come with is also very welcome and should keep the ‘phones safe in transit or when they’re not in use.

Great cans

Definitely the best pair of headphones I've ever owned. The detail and clarity is pretty amazing. I'm not in a great room acoustically. After getting these I don't even use my monitors anymore, hardly for any critical decisions. They just give me such a better representation of what's really happening. So far so good the mixes are translating perfectly with only a very subtle "headphone mix thing" thats just inevitable. That being said you would probably never know after handing it off to mastering. Good stuff.

Lacks Upper Extension

Compared to the HD800S this headphone has a greater emphasis on bass and goes deeper. The mids are not very different. The treble however lack the same amount of air the HD800S produces. It's less harsh, but with the closed off sound stage it's really disappointing. I wasn't expecting it to come to the level of the HD800S, but still leaves a lot to be desired.The construction overall is premium, opulent even. Though less comfortable then the HD800S. If you're looking for maximum comfort the HD800S is also better. However I preferred the materials used in its cushioning and overall construction was much better.

Wow ... what can I say

If you want to mix in an untreated room, this is the way to go. Even just listening music is a total experience with these, you can hear multiple levels and where they are supposed to be, real nice. For the price they are worth it over treating a room, especially if you are modular with your studio.
