I played some links courses this summer, and the flagfinder feature was very nice. One quirk: it is hard to wake the device at times from sleep mode. This is coupled with the fact that the blue indicator light on the rear of the device is hard to see in sunlight, and with sunglasses on. The result is that, for the first few times I had trouble waking the device, I thought the battery had died. If the device doesn't wake up on the first try, hold as instructed by the manual, but then dip it down to your waist and bring it back up. That should wake the device up. I hope a future update from Garmin fixes this, because the product is getting a bad rep.All in all, I look forward to using the device for years to come.

I bought this a month ago. The initial charge did not go properly. A solid blue light was on with no flashing red light. The unit got very warm and would not turn on. I unplugged it and tried again the next day and then it worked. All seemed to be working well as I used it for 3 rounds. I recharged it and the battery went dead during the next round. I contacted the seller, but the 7 day return policy had expired. The seller has a 3 month warranty and said he would exchange it if he could find anything wrong. After charging again, it worked for 2 more rounds and on the 3rd, it went dead again. It has an intermittent problem and I'm sure that when the seller checks it, it will be working. It doesn't automatically pick up the back nine course as you would think that the gps would pick up where you are.

I have had this device about 2 weeks now. I was shooting in the mid 80’s using my Garmin Approach G8. Since I purchased the Z80 I have won the Club Championship and have 4 scores in the 70’s. It is because this device is so accurate that I can take dead aim at the flag. My only gripe is that my Z80 gets locked up in the stand by mode. When it locks up it takes about 5 minuets to get the device back to the current hole. I am lucky I did not get rid of my G8 when this happens. I have concerns that this issue of the Z80 locks up in the stand by mode that it could be a bigger issue with the device. I play golf every day and I need my equipment to perform as advertised. I have over 300 rounds played on my Garmin Approach G8 and it has never failed me but I needed a ... MoreI have had this device about 2 weeks now. So Garmin get the issue solved with the stand by mode fixed or replace my current Z80. Like I said I play every day and I play with different members every day so there is a HUGE potential sales for the Z80 if it performs as advertised. I brag about the accuracy of the Z80 and there is a huge audience of potential buyers at my golf club.

Prior to my purchase, I read quite a few reviews complaining about the battery life on the Z80. However, after doing tons of research I decided to purchase one and find out for myself. I have played two rounds so far and absolutely love this thing. I’ve used the playslike and pin pointer features and they are amazing and easy to access. I checked the battery life after the first round and still had 88% left. I charged it and used it the second time and had 83% left after that round. On the second round, I did use the Z80 much more utilizing the playslike and pin pointer during that round, which only used 5% more of the battery life. While I haven’t tested it yet for 36 holes, I would be surprised if the second round would use 83% or 88% of the remaining battery ... MorePrior to my purchase, I read quite a few reviews complaining about the battery life on the Z80. Yes, it’s expensive but well worth it.
I previously owned a Bushnell Pro XE (before I left it on a cart), so I figured I'd give some input on the devices. Addressing some of the concerns that I've most noted in reviews:Battery Life - has not been an issue for me, I've used the device up to three rounds between charging. I do keep the device up to date (Garmin Express Updates).Locking on Pin - Not as easy as the Bushnell devices, but not a big problem.Time to wake from standby mode - This takes 2-3 seconds, but you get used to it. I usually hit the button when I reach for the device. By the time I'm ready to shoot the pin, the device is ready.Optics - Compared to the Bushnell, the optics are very poor. In my opinion, this is the major trade-off for the GPS overlay. This unit gives much more info ... MoreI previously owned a Bushnell Pro XE (before I left it on a cart), so I figured I'd give some input on the devices. In my opinion, this is the major trade-off for the GPS overlay. This unit gives much more info than a traditional range finder and the GPS overlay is great. I'm happy with the device, but it's not for everyone. It's not difficult to use, but it's also not as easy as point and shoot when you get to the course. You must power on the device and select the course. I think the major decision point for most should be the optics. If optics is of most importance, this is not for you. If you can tolerate the optics in exchange for the great amount of info this device provides, then go for it!
I love the product once it's out of the protective pouch - it's easy to use, has great visual clarity and shows all the information I need to make informed decision on the golf course - even if I've never played the course before. The visual overlay of the map of the hole with distances to bunkers etc. is incredibly useful when playing courses your not intimately familiar with. But there are two items that could be improved, the first is the protective pouch and the second has to do with target acquisition.1) The pouch feels very sturdy and seems to provide a great level of protection, but it lacks indents to make it easy to remove the device from it. My hope is that it will loosen a little over time, but if not it just needs a bit of a redesign.2) The device ... MoreI love the product once it's out of the protective pouch - it's easy to use, has great visual clarity and shows all the information I need to make informed decision on the golf course - even if I've never played the course before. My hope is that it will loosen a little over time, but if not it just needs a bit of a redesign.2) The device lacks either some sort of tactile response when a look of the PIN has been acquired or needs some optical image stabilization. I've got a bit of a shaky hand when it comes to range finders and either option would make it easier on me to be confident that the right target has been selected.
Pros- Easy to use, very accurate and the combination of gps, picture of hole lay out and exact distance to flag make it a fantastic piece of kit. Battery life seems pretty good and it charges quite quickly. Easy to update courses with the Garmin app. Cons- If you don't use it for a couple of holes (I also use a gps watch at the moment) it turns itself off and takes a few seconds to switch back on.
I had a problem at first. The unit would work on the first hole and then I could not get it to turn on. Called customer service. Rep had a Z80 of his own and had the same issue. Unbeknownst to me (an I read the instructions, kinda) the "update" that the device does when you first turn it on is not a full and complete update. YOU MUST CONNECT THE UNIT TO A COMPUTER TO GET THE FULL UPDATE. The rep walked me through the process and answered all my questions. After the small bump in the road, I can say without any reservation that I am THRILLED with my purchase. I was debating between a GPS device or a laser yardage finder. The Z80 combines the best of both worlds with accuracy, easy operation without compromise. It is so nice to know the precise distance to the pin as ... MoreI had a problem at first. It is so nice to know the precise distance to the pin as well as where the front and the back of the green are. Confidence in golf is so important. Having accurate data points really helps with confidence and club selection. You will learn very quickly how far you hit each club and which club to use. Well done Garmin, you have set the bar for golf tech.
I have been using the Approach Z80 for 6 weeks. I LOVE the features. Having the hole layout with GPS distances from where I'm standing to various hazards and traps as well as distances to the front and back of the green to augment the super accurate laser range finding to the flag is the ultimate. BUT - the battery has been going out after 6 holes or 8 holes. When I first bought it, I was able to finish an 18 hole round, but after that it won't make it past the front nine without running out of battery. I understand the standby feature - battery saver - recently received two software updates that are suppose to improve battery life. I just installed both updates. I will comment after playing my next round in a few days. I gave the Z80 four stars because of the ... MoreI have been using the Approach Z80 for 6 weeks. I LOVE the features. Unmatched technology with GPS and on screen course graphics working hand in hand to give you unmatched technology and information all in one. It really is a game changer. I have had it for a year now and love it. The challenge lies in poor software management of the device. Mine contantly shuts down if you leave it in the sun for just a few minutes. I play in California where it can be warm but, the shut downs are very frustrating and unpredictable. The second problem the Z80 has is waking up from its sleep mode that a recent software update hopefully fixes. The Z80 is like having a Ferrari in your garage and not starting when you have the most important date of your life. Dependability is a question you have to ask yourself of a $599 now $499 range finder.
