Garmin Approach Z82 Rangefinder & GPS
Approach Z82 laser range finder with GPS is the most accurate laser range finder available. It also gives you a new perspective on more than 41,000 courses worldwide. Looking through the viewfinder, you can see the view you ranged to as well as a full-colour CourseView overlay in 2-D for the hole you're playing, showing distances to hazards and to the front and back of the green. Then when you activate the laser range finder, you get absolute precise distances to any ranged target within 10”. The Approach Z82 automatically determines which hole you are currently playing to provide appropriate course layout and par information. Image stabilisation makes it easier to find and range to the flag. The ingenious flag finder locks on the flag of any hole. After flag lock, the view finder changes automatically to add a detailed 2-D view on the green layout plus distances to the front and back of the green. The view through the range finder shows the hole at 6-times magnification for clear, crisp views with augmented map overlays that show the hole layout. The PlaysLike Distance feature adjusts yardages for uphill or downhill shots based on the change in elevation from where you are standing to the location labelled on the map. This makes figuring out which club to use for uphill and downhill shots much easier. And for tournament play, you can turn PlaysLike Distance on or off. There’s even a PinPointer feature that helps show you the direction to the green on blind shots.

I have used this rangefinder for about 10 rounds on a few different courses. I’ve used other rangefinders and recently have been using GPS software on my phone. I never enjoyed using my phone on the course due to the distraction. This device is just fun to use. There is a slight delay for the device to wake up, but it doesn’t bother me at all. I end up using the GPS functionality even more than the laser. They’ve done an amazing job with the software UI to give you a ton of information very quickly. I do wish there was a shortcut to get to the score card quickly. The pin finder function is surprisingly useful (pro tip, don’t wear a hat with a magnetic ball marker). I use a bag with a magnet flap and that doesn’t seem to bother it.The laser is very accurate and grabs the flag quickly. The overlay of the ranged distance on the hole overview is just awesome. I end up playing a lot of evenings. One benefit of this device is makes the flag easy to see even when getting dark. It amplifies the ambient light and makes it easy to see.The battery life is probably the only drawback. I usually need to charge about every other round. I keep a backup battery in my bag so even if I forget to charge, I can plug in while getting ready. It actually charges very quickly. The connection to the phone works great and very cool how the score updates from the rangefinder into the Garmin golf app.In summary, this is a premium device at a premium price. At first I struggled with the idea of spending $500+ on a rangefinder, but very glad I did.

The Approach Z82 has exceeded my expectations. Having used the Bushnell rangefinder for years decided to buy the Garmin Z82 to get both the rangefinder and GPS course maps in one unit. After using it a few weeks in both tournament play and normal rounds I can say it is absolutely worth the money. The Z82 performs better than the Bushnell when targeting the flag for distances as you scan the green it picks up the flag and locks in the distance faster. If your hand shakes using the Bushnell it is harder to lock in the pin unlike the Garmin Z82 that senses the flag easily as you scan across the flag momentarily it locks in and provides a good visual response along with the unit vibration. Firstly, the device is definitely a game changer. It does feel like it's almost cheating.Pros:- Lasering a flag and knowing how much space you have from the front/back/left/right- All hazards are tagged and you can flip between them.- Knowing the distances for blind tee shots- Battery lasts 4.5 18-HolesCons- The 'case' sucks. It's super tight and unusable during play. I use a Callaway range finder clamshell case for it. MAKE a CLAMSHELL case Garmin like the Z80.- Sometimes it doesn't hit the flag but the tree, HOWEVER you know it missed because the yellow line across the green doesn't show up- No magnetic side. Can't put a magnetic wrap as the original case is too tight.

I purchased a Garmin Z80 rangefinder on 1/17/21 and I'm experiencing two major issues. TGW refused to help, relying on the one year warranty.First, the rangefinder only detects uphill distances. It is supposed to detect and register both uphill and downhill elevation changes. Yet, despite obvious downhill shots, the Z80 will only register an uphill elevation change. That obviously doesn't help!Second, it does not hold a charge. Despite being fully charged, the battery dies after about 9 holes!! Initially the battery lasted two 18 holes rounds and now it doesn't even last one!I would expect better results and longevity from a Garmin product.Given the short golf season here in Colorado, the Z80 would have been used about 6 months in 2021 and about two months ... So, it lasted less than one year of actual use!
The hole display is fantastic. The hazard locations. The scoring on the app seems a bit much. The green layout for the additional money doesn't seem to add value along with the find my device feature. A magnet would be helpful but certainly not a requirement. The device if used as a normal range finder will last far more than 1 round of golf. Initially I was using on the tee box of a par 5 to view hazards. Now I use it just the same as another other range finder. This stays in standby mode more than anything. Under my current usage I would have just assumed purchasing a battery operated device and not a charging required device. Still no regrets and love the hole display and all the features this product offers.
I recently lost my Garmin Z80 range finder. After researching a replacement, I decided to stick to Garmin. I liked the built-in GPS feature and digital display. The new Z82 loads the GPS maps faster than the Z80 and I like the built-in wind speed and directions feature. But you must make sure you're connected to the Garmin golf app for this feature to work. Also, I noticed that if the phone has gone into sleep mode it takes a few seconds for the range finder to display the wind information.
I've had a Bushnell rangefinder for several years which I've liked. I purchased the Garmin knowing I could return it if I didn't like it. Here are my conclusions.Generally I love this rangefinder. It's one of those items that one needs to use a bit and go back to the operating manual or product videos to get the most out of it. I'm still learning how to change the info on the screen and one doesn't have time in a round to fumble with features and menus. That said, setup at the beginning of a round is quick, and one is well advised to begin that process while warming up, not on the first tee. Probably takes 60 seconds to get going and choose the course, etc. It's a different type of screen than the Bushnell, showing a color image that is smaller and somewhat less ... Probably takes 60 seconds to get going and choose the course, etc. It's a different type of screen than the Bushnell, showing a color image that is smaller and somewhat less bright than the Bushnell. I'm still not sure which I like better. One simply gets more features with this unit however.I play at the same course most of the time, and have for several years so I know it pretty well. I'm working on better "course management" in my game, so having a side screen view of bunkers, distance to front, middle and back of the green has started to change my game! A feature I didn't know I'd love on this unit. It's a bit harder to lock onto the flag. I have to double check and see if I've turned on the image stabilization. That and the lack of brightness at times are my major complaints. It's also somewhat expensive (even on sale for $499) Overall, I really like this unit and will keep it.
This unit is provides excellent range measurement and is easy to use. It apparently uses GPS combined with the range estimate to eliminate back of the flag miss readings. The first unit received didn't work out of the box. Garmin phone support was very good at working with me to verify that it was faulty. They provided a free shipping label for the return and sent a new unit quickly. I had the new unit within 5 days. Phone support on questions was excellent. The unit battery last about two rounds and then has to be recharged with a standard USB charger. I very much like this unit.
Yes, it provides a great deal of data; however, have a few issues that are holding me back from loving it. First, I cannot fully trust the results. Say this because I'm getting some questionable feedback from the Garmin. First, to give context. I am 58 and a scratch golfer and have been a plus golfer for over 40 years...so when I say that my 9 iron should go 145...it should be decently close because that's my number. Well, the Garmin will occassionally say 159 when I know that it didn't go that far; heck, I can see that it didn't go that far. Equally it will give me a lower number than what I know it did. That said...while the balls I'm using on the range are not brand new ProV1's they are new soft cover Callaways...so some variance is allowed but this seemed ... That said...while the balls I'm using on the range are not brand new ProV1's they are new soft cover Callaways...so some variance is allowed but this seemed excessive.I agree with the swing speeds the device provides. The main reason I purchased the Garmin was to work on shorter distances with wedges. Easy swings, 1/2 and 3/4 swings. This is the one area that the Garmin is weak on. Shots that I can see are going 65 yards show up as everything from 38 to 82. Given enough shots a bell curve appears with data you can use but the accuracy is unfortunately not there. On the Software side it would be nice to simply eliminate a shot if it was poorly hit or the yardage provided was obviously incorrect. This would make the data far more useful. The ability to have the device voice out data you request on each shot is a very nice feature. For example, you can have it provide Swing Speed or Carry Distance or really almost any other data on a shot after it is struck. So you don't have to go look at your phone to see what it was reading. For the price I the device is decent but it does not compete with more professional models. IMHO.
I was used to my Garmin 6 that unfortunately couldn't be repaired so I'm trying the Approach Z82. I thought this would have the features of the G6 with the addition of laser functionality, but It is way too difficult to operate. I'm constantly hitting wrong button and then have to page back through menu and option pages to get back. Doesn't switch easily from shooting mode to course view mode. It is lightweight and laser locking feature is good. I don't see any benefit to pairing with my phone other than reporting scores and who cares about that. I'm likely to try it a few more times to see if my navigation skills improve, but if not it will be returned. I'm thankful for the 60 day return policy.
