I've had this watch for a month now and used it primarily for hiking and running. Expensive? Yep. Worth the price? I say yes. Why? I upgraded from Fenix 5, so many features were familiar, but the 7X adds the Body Battery and Pulse OX functions, among others. You can customize (pretty much endlessly), including the touch screen function to be on or off, or on or off during particular activities. Didn't think I'd like it at all, but I do - makes the maps in particular easier to navigate. Love the flashlight feature, particularly the red light option (used it at night for star gazing to preserve night vision). The watch interface is a great improvement - a ton of info on the watch face, with the "Glance" ("Widgets" on the 5) customizable, as are all of the colors. ... MoreI've had this watch for a month now and used it primarily for hiking and running. Finally, the battery life is pretty amazing, as advertised - in my experience the solar feature seems to keep you from losing any battery life when you otherwise would, not adding to the charge, but my solar testing conditions haven't been the best. There's a first-thing-in-the-morning summary of sleep, recovery, preparation for exercise, calendar events and weather, complete with a little life-affirming quote (maybe sappy, but I like it) - like everything else with this watch, you can turn this on or off. The logarithms (no different for this watch than any other Garmin model), aren't the most accurate - Recovery Time in particular is vastly overstated; others have written articles about this, but that's not a dig on this watch (and frankly, I'm amazed that they're brave enough to try and estimate that at all and come as close as they do). If the watch got lost or broken would I buy it again? Yes, and quickly. Would I recommend it to a friend? Assuming they could afford it, yes, without reservation. I have tried pretty much every brand of performance watch at one time or another. This is my favorite, by far. Christmas is coming - tell Santa.

I was a longtime user of the Fenix 5x plus - and wore it almost every day for 4 years. The watch performed admirably across multiple events and environments. Wear and Tear led me to upgrading my watch, and I couldn't be happier. The user interface does leave a bit to be desired in terms of navigation, but once you've acclimated, the features, functionality and usage make the watch an independent fitness tracker and coach, without the need to rely on on a distracting phone. The solar functionality is great, and the software has been significantly improved. By far the most pleasant introductions are the morning summaries and body battery - quick, actionable glances to prep me for my day or close down the old day. Suggested workouts are also a welcome approach. ... MoreI was a longtime user of the Fenix 5x plus - and wore it almost every day for 4 years. Garmin asks you to commit, and returns your investment in spades. I look forward to my next Fenix in a few years' time.

My experience with this watch has been terrible. Initially I was targeting with this watch because I am a surfer. If you are a surfer no not buy this watch. The back button and this button to get to the ring will just stop working. Currently I am on my second watch and it’s doing the same thing my first watch did. What is it doing you may ask? Well, both times the back button and button to get to the rink of options just stopped working. Sometimes this watch is a Mormon, it loves soaking. If you soak it in lubricated water, then maybe, just maybe the next day it will work. I love paying $800+ for a watch that I have to soak after I do my favorite sport just to get it to work properly. So, if you are a surfer just factor in 20 mins of soapy water soaking and 12 hours of waiting for this watch to work. Perhaps Garmin should employ someone that can actually solve this problem before they sell it as a surfing watch. It’s the weekend and I guess I’ll wait till Monday to talk to someone it tech support before I find out this things fate. Do better.

This thing has been great for training and everyday life. I have owned a fenix 5, a 245 music, and previous Sunnto devices. I have given up on integrated WHRM during training for any smartwatch, and instead rely on separate optical hrm in most cases. I’ve used Garmin fitness tracking for a while and performance is generally equivalent to my past devices. It’s big, but I get 1-2 weeks of battery life from full charge depending on training volume; to me an apple watch is just a nonstarter with one day of battery life. I beat the heck out of it and so far holds up. The integrated flashlight has been surprisingly a favorite feature—fantastic for nighttime dog walks etc. Cons: Garmin never does great with connectivity for accessories—expect some dropouts with your ... MoreThis thing has been great for training and everyday life. New HRV functionality is terrible—it will completely ruin any of your recovery metrics and makes their iffy sleep metrics even worse. Wish you could disable it.
Perfect sport watch imo! No need to break out the phone anymore on a hike, mount a phone to my bike, or carry one on a short run. Throw some tunes on it and my wireless earbuds and I'm ready to go. Would have loved to have this when I was on the AT. I've made use of almost the entire suite of functions/apps so far and find most of them useful and decently accurate; heart rate, gps location, etc. The preloaded maps and navigation are great to have when exploring new trails and you're short on daylight. Again, this would have been great on the AT when my phone and battery charger were out of juice. Stopping frequently into towns to recharge batteries was getting annoying. Battery life & screen size are very good but sometimes I wish I would have gotten the 7X. Although, I'm perfectly happy with the 7s 47mm. Definitely worth getting the sapphire solar version as I've bumped this a few times already and still looks like new. Solar doesn't do much for battery life in a wooded hike though. Some people have complained about the watch band and rashes, I've never had this happen. It can be fiddly at times when adjusting the strap though. It doesn't absorb sweat, slide around and cleans up quickly. I try to rinse out any debris that might have gotten into it during an activity. Overall I love the watch, but not the price.
I got this watch a few weeks ago mainly for hiking so i can follow courses I make and download to the watch. Since then I have been using it for more and more things. One thing that I thought (before I got it) that was a little gimmicky was the built in flashlight on the 7X. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I use that every night now when I don’t want to wake my wife or newborn up when I am up at night. I never use the light on my phone anymore. The red light makes it so nice ti see what I need without having a bright white light. So far my only real con is the screen backlight brightness is not able to go high enough. During the day when outside it is not needed at all but in those low light times an hour or so around dawn/dusk it does make it hard to see clearly. ... MoreI got this watch a few weeks ago mainly for hiking so i can follow courses I make and download to the watch. During the day when outside it is not needed at all but in those low light times an hour or so around dawn/dusk it does make it hard to see clearly. The same can be said when inside as there is just enough light to make it harder to see. Since the Fenix 7X and the Epix 2 are basically the same watch aside from the screen and battery life. I hope that Garmin will add Solar and a much ling lasting battery to the Epix in the future and/or a much brighter backlight to the Fenix so that it was easier to read in lower light situations. The battery life not lasting even the daylight hours on the Epix 2 is the reason I got the Fenix 7X Solar. If the Fenix had a brighter back light (maybe) one that adjusted to preferred settings using the solar sensor that would help a lot. Especially for those of us over 40. Enhancement requests: I think there is a market out there for a jumbo size version if the Fenix where the actual screen part if the watch was closer to 50mm instead of 35mm. It would allow for much greater detail when using the watch outdoors during activities when you only have a split second to look down at your watch. Also some more customizable sounds would be great. I find it annoying sometimes when I look down at my watch and it is just an email or some app notification instead of a text message. This brings up my only other con for this watch. Not being able to filter what apps on the phone show up on the watch is kind of annoying. There are only a few apps like messaging or other important ones that i want on my watch, but i am stuck with all the others that come along as it is all or nothing. There needs to be a way to control what apps and messaging notifications make it through to the watch and what sounds they make. Even for basic things like text message there should be a way to filter out contacts you do or dont want as notifications on your watch. Also while it is not a critial feature it would be immensely useful to be able to create preset text message responses similar to the way you have presets on the inReach devices. All in all I really like the watch even at the $1,000 price tag. If you guys are looking for people to review compare future devices let me know.
I recently purchased the Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar - and absolutely love it! I've been using Garmin products for years and have always had good luck with the products and company/customer service - so choosing Garmin over other competitive brands/products was never really a consideration for me. As a multi sport endurance athlete, prior to the Fenix 7X, I wore the FR 935 (and 910XT before that). My FR 935 worked fine - no complaints. I typically train every day so switching from dress watch (Rolex) to sport watch is not ideal. So for quite some time now, I basically wear my Garmin watch every day. (I still love my Rolex and wear it for special/more formal occasions) What attracted me to the Fenix 7X was the sapphire crystal. I wanted all the functionality of a multi-sport watch and something that looked like a nice/high-quality watch, as well. (The Gorilla glass holds up pretty well, but after a while, mine started to look a little rough). I was a little concerned about the size and weight of the 7X as compared to my FR 935 (or new FR 955) and did as much research as I could before pulling the trigger. I finally made the decision to go with the 7X Sapphire Solar - and absolutely love it! As a multi-sport watch it's awesome! And, as a nice looking high-quality time piece for my everyday wear - it looks great! I'm not sure if I'll ever use all of the functionality the Fenix has to offer - but that's okay. I'm sure I don't use all of my iPhone, either. As for size and weight, it is slightly larger and heavier than my FR 935 (and the new FR 955), but within a day or two of wearing it and getting used to it - it's not an issue. I wear it all time, including when sleeping. We already know Garmin battery life is amazing so I take it off occasionally to charge it. I'm 6'0'' / 190 lbs. So far, I'm loving my new Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar and would absolutely recommend it. PS. I use the flashlight all the time! Who knew that would be a thing? Good luck - and I hope this information is helpful.
Ignore the flashy technology; Garmin missed the mark with basics. After swimming in a pool, the buttons stop functioning. Sometimes the buttons stop functioning mid-swim. Most often it's the back/lap button that stops functioning, rendering any form of lapped workout impossible. On multiple occasions the screen scrolls uncontrollably on its own after swimming as well, which could also be a "stuck button" issue. Garmin says to rinse the watch buttons with fresh water after every swim, and to soak the watch in soapy water if the buttons stop functioning. Neither of those actions should be necessary for a multi-sport watch, let alone one that costs $700+. Soaking works sometimes. Garmin replaced my first watch, and I quickly experienced the same issues with the second. ... MoreIgnore the flashy technology; Garmin missed the mark with basics. Garmin replaced my first watch, and I quickly experienced the same issues with the second. My 3rd watch is on its way, but I have no confidence this one will work any better. Credit to Garmin for replacing the device while under warranty, but after that expires, I'm out of luck. They also offered me an upgrade to the Solar version; however, that likely doesn't solve the problem since the button design is the same. The Garmin rep. I spoke with would not confirm or deny if they found any design or manufacturing issues, or if the upgraded Solar version is manufactured in a different factory than the standard version. Reading tech blogs, it seems that I'm not the only one having these problems. It's frustrating that Garmin would not acknowledge a widespread issue. I won't trust this watch in a multisport race this year, especially coming out of the swim in a triathlon. The battery on my first device was incredible, but the battery life on my 2nd device was significantly lower and experienced huge drops even when not using GPS. I didn't even address this with Garmin since the buttons weren't working anyway.I previously owned a Garmin 920XT for 6 years. The barometric barometer broke on my original and my replacement during the warranty period, but otherwise, the watch worked flawlessly. I wore the watch 24/7, never rinsed it after swimming in pools/lakes/oceans, and never experienced button issues. It's possible you'll love the Fenix 7 if you don't plan to swim with it.
Purchased a few weeks ago and taken it on a couple of summits and hikes. I’m familiar with the Garmin InReach so was a little surprised this required a new app and new website to build your maps on. The watch requires 3 apps. Being a tech person I’m still frustrated and lost navigating the apps and menus so could not imagine how many features many will pay for but never use due to the complexity. Solar charging seems useless while wearing and seems the only way to benefit is by removing it and laying it out in the sun for a few straight hours. Disappointed too that the charging cable has not switched over to USB-C seems like they’re leaving room for a next generation. Screen is not very bright when lit and at max brightness and seems to lack contrast when in the unlit mode. One easy improvement that might exist I just can’t seem to find it would be a guide or index explaining what information each data field provides you when setting up your data screens and even better an image of that data field. On the plus side the strap seems high quality and the DLC finished Bezel has withstood a few bangs against rocks without chipping so that’s a great surprise. I think the watch is the best in its class but has plenty of room for improvements
I purchased this 2 months ago replacing my Suunto Ambit 2. This is a big upgrade for sure. Overall I am still learning how to use it. Part of the problem with all new electronics is it has more features that you can use, or realize. So here is a brief overview: Using it for mountaineering, super fast and accurate GPS. Nice to have the maps preloaded. Since the screen is still a watch, you have to learn how to zoom in and out while the screen is locked. The specific screens are totally customizable and thus very helpful but takes a bit of time to set it all up. I so far do not think much of the solar...does not really seem to make much of a difference in battery life. Speaking of the battery, overall really good considering the features that use energy. The heart rate monitor is OK, not always correct. At the beginning of a climb I will be working really hard at altitude and it shows a walking heart rate. Over time, and in certain positions, seems to "catch up". I really like the feature of automatically using the map elevation to set the altimeter when starting a climb. Seems like the elevation gain and loss is still dependent on how windy it is, which changes the pressure and thus adds elevation gain.So at present seems to be working well, I am able to use it and customize it, but it does take work to learn and set it up for your liking. My biggest negative is the watch face should be more easy to read, without using the back light. I think this will improve but at present kind of hard if not in bright light. Won't give it 5 stars until I use it for much longer and see if it continues to hold up.
