A very capable, great value watch

I bought this about 2 months ago and am still happy with my purchase decision. I was looking for a watch well suited to regular running (GPS, heart-rate, waterproof...), with music on board via Bluetooth, that was attractive enough to always be on my wrist for any occasion, and of course with decent general fitness tracking and smartphone notification capabilities - and this watch does all of those things more than well enough.I love the always on display, the battery life is excellent and for running I was very impressed by how quickly a GPS lock is reached (usually less than 10 seconds!) and by the accuracy of the heart rate monitor for jogging (I compared it to a heart rate chest strap). The watch faces and screens are nicely customisable, and I like how you can control the music on your phone - even when your phone is connected to bluetooth speakers - via the watch. My only real criticism is that the provided means of uploading music to the watch is very flawed. The Garmin Express desktop computer software on Windows simply doesn't sync music from your iTunes playlists like it is supposed to (maybe it works better on MacOS). But luckily you can use Windows Media Player to do it, though this does require manually adding songs to playlists. Also, though the Garmin Connect smartphone app is good, I actually prefer the Polar Flow app's clear display of daily/weekly % of activity/energy burned target, and Flow's ability to review your heart-rate, pace etc. against your position on the map / stage of your run.But overall I am very satisfied. I love running with just the watch paired to fully wireless earphones - no cords, ipods/ipod straps or chest-straps! The Apple Watch is arguably more polished and feature-rich, but this is better value for money and also is smartphone-agnostic (supports Android and iPhone). Plus I prefer the round shape and love the always-on display compared to the Apple Watch. And compared to other watches with similar features (Samsung, Polar, Fitbit), I really like the size and shape - simple, slim and unobtrusive.

Very easy to set up and sync with the Connect app on my mobile phone.Cons: Didn't record my HR with any accuracy whatsoever whilst I was using the indoor rower (this is one of my main and favourite forms of CV exercise). I tried it several times, adjusting the strap (looser, tighter, on different parts of my wrist) and on my opposite wrist (which I didn't like and it still didn't make a difference). The reps counter on a strength workout is a bit gimmicky, rarely accurate- which is okay if you can be bothered to edit and correct afterwards each set. You can also add the weight used after each set, however this is in kg which is fine, but then the app showed lbs (pounds) which only confuses. The exercise recognition is not even close to being accurate (and my technique is impeccable, even if I do say so myself- it's my job)! The watch only proved to frustrate me, lengthened my workouts due to tampering with it between sets (otherwise, what's the point of having the features if you're not going to use them) and failed miserably to live up to my (very realistic) expectations. The screen is very poor (dim) and even though you could turn the brightness up it doesn't have the clarity of all of its rival models. The colours just aren't vibrant enough for this age and only bring down the user experience. The watch faces included are low quality and 'busy' to see what stats you'd like on the lock screen. The App Store allows you to download others but the best one is in the format of the Apple-Nike style but nowhere near as good.Battery-life was poor and now where near as advertised! I had been researching this watch and its rivals (Apple Watch series 3, Fitbit Ionic) for some months and was over the moon to find it on a Black Friday deal of £50 off but I was more than happy to return it and get my money back. To say I was happier with my very old Forerunner 210 would be an understatement- the Vivoactive 3 did nothing new with any accuracy for me!

Last December 24, I encountered a problem with my watch and the touchscreen, so I promptly reported it to Garmin's customer care team. They just asked details, videos and photos of the concern and processed an exchange within the same day with no questions asked!! After a few weeks of waiting, given it was a holiday, I receive a replacement free of charge!! Amazing customer service! It goes to show how they value you as a customer who believes in their product. I will be a garmin user for life and will continue to recommend this brand to all my friends.. Keep up the good work! DO NOT BUY
23 September 2020

Before getting this watch, I looked at the negative reviews just to see and I figured they were one-off situations...not the case. I have now had this watch for five months and I really regret buying it. It was great for the first 2.5 months and then the music started stopping halfway through my runs (like 40 min in), which was the main reason I bought the watch, and sometimes the run wouldn't upload in Garmin Connect. It turns out the watch will just freeze and corrupt the activity file so that it can't be read but it gives all semblance of working fine while you're running (other than the music stopping). I also had the battery run down really fast on me randomly (like 5% every 30 min) for no reason, this only happened about once every two weeks at first and now ... MoreBefore getting this watch, I looked at the negative reviews just to see and I figured they were one-off situations...not the case. I can charge it in the morning and only use it as a smartwatch (I even turn off the phone connectivity to conserve battery) and it's dead before I go to bed. This is a deal breaker for me as I don't want to have to charge the watch every single day, it's supposed to last 7 days. I have been contacting Garmin Support but they have not been helpful. They couldn't tell me that the activity files were being corrupted, I had to figure that out myself. And when I emailed them about the watch battery issue they just said that GPS and music during an activity will use up more of the battery which is less than helpful.

The sound of music has great clarity and bass listening pleasure. I even find myself playing music from Garmin Smartwatch long after I am finished with my run while doing errands.I have used three different wireless, true wireless headphones with my Garmin Smartwatch with music such as JBL, JLabs and all connect and sync to Garmin Smartwatch so effortless. The key is to make sure your phone is at least 33 feet away or just turn it off like I prefer and leave in car when on a run so Garmin Smartwatch can easily connect with Bluetooth headphones.Switching back and forth from run data and music is really a breeze without interruption. The Smartwatch breaks down every detail from last to current run with perfect GPS timing. The Garmin Smartwatch pauses run if you need to change music. If I could give the Garmin Vivoactive 3 Music Smartwatch a 10, I would have. It is just that smart.

Though the colors are drab and there isn't as much customizability as Android Wear watches, I gave up those because I'd need to charge every day or two. This lasts 7 days if I don't use GPS. Other than battery life, the display is always readable even without backlight in bright situations... Way more readable than any of the top Apple/Samsung watches in Bright sunlight and with none of the battery drain of AMOLED trying to outshine the sun.I really like the sleep tracking as it gives me a lot of useful insights and helps me understand scientifically what changing patterns before bed do to my sleep much better than my gut feeling of how tired I am the next morning/day... Again something you need more than 2 days battery life to really dig into consistently.I did find the music function a bit too primitive and awkward to use (have Sony wireless headphones with their own music storage easier to use), and found the non music version of this watch for $120 so ended up returning this great watch for an equivalent at a lot less money. There interface on this phone is pretty simple and usable though I find it a bit slow to get to an individual item like steps that are in the middle of the list of features. Would be nice to have hot spots on the watch face to directly get to at least the pedometer, steps, and exercise activities, but being able to go through the list backwards or forwards at least gives me quick access to checking my pulse history.Only problem so far is the step counter stopped working a couple of weeks in, but turning it off and back on resolved that issue. The Android app is much easier to navigate data with and offers really impressive displays and trends. For perspective, I've owned 2 Android Wear watches but no fitness watches in the past.

Pros: Nice and straightforward.Cons: Watch seems unable to read HR with any accuracy around the 3-5 to 10-15 minute region of a workout other than running or cycling. It just drops to below 100 or even 80 for no apparent reason. This is reported elsewhere (once you dig deeper) and would appear to be a software algorithm issue as the HR is pretty good at other times, even tracing HIIT intensity reasonably well (except as described above). The watch also seems to take it's eye off the ball during a run with the pace occasionally rising up 25% or more. This is very strange as it's not GPS wander as the plot is very accurate afterwards. This is very strange as it's not GPS wander as the plot is very accurate afterwards. If the pace error happens at the end of the run, the run has to be extended to make up the distance as the watch is simply not doing the maths correctly despite plotting GPS position correctly. If it happens mid run, the overall calculation seems to be unaffected, it just occasionally takes a break from doing it's job properly. Perhaps some dodgy algorithm yet again.Third issue is equally as bad as the others although not a fault like the others are - the locking system. Why oh why can't the long press on the watch face be disabled? The only option is to lock the watch completely to stop all sorts of things happening rather than just locking the long press. Locking the watch leaves a big icon in the middle of the screen so having a sleeve when running or biking in the winter can cause very undesirable behaviour. So two faults that may or may not be in every Vivoactive 3 and one design error that definitely is.Otherwise everything else pretty good.....

Overall Really Happy

I bought the VA3M about a week and a half ago. Love the look of the watch, love that I can customize the different watch faces, battery life is great, fitness tracking features (steps, HR, GPS) are spot on, the built-in activities work really well. From a full charge I tracked 4 walks, 2 runs, and 2 cardio workouts and got 4 full days of battery. I was able to download my Spotify playlists easily, and it will even add the new songs I add to that existing playlist with a simple sync. All the widgets work really well and the ease of use is great. The ONLY negative is the Bluetooth can be a little finicky. When the Garmin Connect app (love the app by the way) is open, the watch will say I'm connected, but when I close the app, the watch will say I'm disconnected, even though my phone says I'm connected and I still get notifications from my iPhone. The only problem with that is that "Find my phone" doesn't work and the weather widget won't update because the watch thinks I'm disconnected. Everything else works fine. However, when I drive home from work with the app closed, the watch will randomly connect again so I'm thinking it may have something to do with the GPS? Just a little weird. Before I bought the watch, I read reviews complaining about the Bluetooth connectivity from watch to headphones while running without my phone and listening to music that was downloaded on the watch. I wear the watch on my left wrist and connect it with Bose Soundsport earbuds. Although the music can skip at times, I still think it works pretty well. I switched wrists during a run and it worked perfectly so if it bothers you, switching wrists for a run takes 5 seconds and is not a huge deal. This is my first fitness/smartwatch I've ever used. I was waiting for a watch with GPS and offline Spotify playback that wouldn't break the bank. Overall, I'm really happy and would highly recommend VA3M.

Perfect entry-level fitness watch
30 September 2019

I wanted a watch to use to track my runs and listen to music without carrying with my smartphone. After comparing this with Samsung and Fossil watches, I decided this fitted my needs. I've had this watch for about 8 months, using it mainly to track my runs while listening to music and monitor my sleep and heart rate during the day.Daily useGarmin advertises up to a week of battery life in this watch. This is true if you turn off most of the features. In reality, you'll get around 3 days if you workout every other day.GPSAccuracy is perfect. It usually takes less than 20 seconds to connect to GPS, though there's been a couple of times that it fails to do so even after some reboots. It usually takes less than 20 seconds to connect to GPS, though there's been a couple of times that it fails to do so even after some reboots. However, even if you run without the GPS locked, it still records distances accurately (though the mapped run is usually messed up).MusicI first started uploading music directly to the watch since Spotify was not available. It was the worst. You cannot upload (as to my understanding) music from your smartphone, only through a PC. Also, albums sometimes did not group correctly or the songs were not in the correct order. With Spotify, it is simpler. You create a playlist in your phone app and then you upload it to the watch. However, be noticed that this process is slow and for some reason it drains the battery. As with the GPS, headphones usually connect fast (I'm currently using Jabra Elite 65t) but it can sometimes fail to do so even after a lot of tries. Also, you will need to use the watch in your right hand as the sound cuts a lot if you use it in your left hand. I read on the Internet that this is because the transmitter in the earphones are placed in the right earbud, so your body is interfering between the earbud and the watch.Battery lifeI've been training for a marathon for the last couple of months, and it has survived all my runs using GPS and music on (the longest being 3 hours). However, I don't think it can go further than 4 hours. You should take that into consideration and adjust the settings to maximize battery life accordingly (for example, in long runs I turn off the backlight and for the marathon I'll also uninstall all the watchfaces (as some user-made faces are said to drain battery life faster) and turn off any other useless features.Smartphone integrationThis is not a smartwatch. If you're looking for a watch where you'll be able to answer to notifications and calls and use Android or iOS apps as if you were using your smartphone, look elsewhere. Notifications show up when connected to my smartphone via Bluetooth, and that's pretty much it.SummaryIf you're looking for an entry-level watch to exercise without carrying your cellphone, this is the watch for you. I do think that the watch is way overpriced for the features. However, I chose this watch because it covers what I was looking for and most importantly I don't have to charge it every single day as I would need to do with an Apple Watch or a smartwatch with WearOS or similar.

Real bad Garmin older versions worked better
18 March 2019

Hi I bought this in black Friday 2018, by mistake I didn't used it right away. And I didn't bought a protection plan due this type of garmins are supposed to be a 100% OK due the brand, price and history. Why was I needed to be forced to buy a protection plan when you buy something that's supposed to work fine? Based on what its advertised per that brand and the specifications,I started using it by Jan 2019 due I was very busy with work.Big MISTAKE,When I first started to use it I compared the tracking activity to and older version of garmin, FORERUNNER 310 XT, this last forerunner garmin its so old I expected the new vivoactive 3 Music to Fly against this older version and what was my surprise??The new Vivoactive took around 8-10 Minutes to get GPS signal when ... MoreHi I bought this in black Friday 2018, by mistake I didn't used it right away. And you can not blame the GPS satellite reception because same day when I use older garmins the route show nice and right on the on garmin Connect.I Tried to return the garmin and bad news , Since I didn't bought it the protection plan I was not covered no more, and Best Buy wont support me no more. They refer me to Garmins website.I try calling by phone and as always along time before you can actually speak to a human, at least a 30 min wait, after this I was simply transfer me to another and got really frustrated and desperate so I hang up.Then I contacted garmin by Chat since there's no physical way to contact them here in San Diego. The agent ask me to erase some files and to change the activity from recording it by segment to record it by second, and also to erase a couple of files by connecting it to my computer. This helped a bit but the tracking activity accuracy its still awful .By now Im stucked with this garmin, and I still have to use my older garmin when I go to a important competitions due I can not rely on my "brand new gadget"
