I ordered two identical sets of these. Side by side they have differences in build and thickness. I can only chalk this up to them being 'seconds', or from a factory with poor quality control. The thickness around the ratchet end shows differences in the chrome metal thickness, like they were cast in separate dies. Weird. Definitely look different from the original Gearwrench set like this I got over a decade ago at the big box hardware store. They seem to work, but I'll keep an eye on it. Great price on Amazon, I hope it's not because they are seconds. I do know these are legit because this listing at the time of this review is linked straight off of Gearwrench's website as 'where to buy'.

Using a better metal and making it thinner is a real useful benefit.Another benefit is the smoothness of operation. No wobble or binding in the internal mechanism. This is a complete set with no missing sizes.Overall Thoughts:Premium tools at a a fair price.

Beautifully crafted, well made wrenches. The shaft on these wrenches is slimmer than on my husky wrenches. The finish is nice, shiny and very easily cleaned with a rag. The ratcheting box ends are 12 point and only require a slight turn back to get another bite, which will come in very handy in a tight spot. They require to be turned over to ratchet the other way since there is no switch. There is an “r” on one side indicating it is the right turning (tightening) side. This standard set covers all of the usual sizes from 1/4 inch up to an inch. The numbers on the wrenches are a good size as to be easily seen. The molded plastic package holds the wrenches securely. Just insert one side of the wrench in and then snap the other side in. It works great to hang on the ... MoreBeautifully crafted, well made wrenches. After another simple repair task was made tougher than is it should have been by a missing/lost/borrowed-and-not-returned (choose one) ratcheting wrench I finally broke down and ordered a new set. As a former auto repair shop owner I remember when I bought my first set from the tool man as more of a curiosity purchase than out of need. GearWrenches quickly they became part of my most used tools from a time saver and convenience of use standpoint. I will always grab a ratcheting wrench before a box or traditional style open end wrench due their convenience of use. I will always grab a ratcheting wrench before a box or traditional style open end wrench due their convenience of use. They are especially useful when working in very tight spaces due to their 5 degree minimal range of motion. The 13 piece GearWrench SAE Racheting Combination Wrench Set comes with its own sturdy "Wrench Locker" (a plastic snap in carrier/organizer that works well but is too big for all but the largest tool box drawers). The GearWrench name has been around for +/- 20years - I believe they introduced the "ratcheting wrench" concept to the tool world but don't quote me. They come with a manufacturing defect lifetime warranty (whatever that is). I have used and abused my original set for all kinds of wrenching challenges and have never had a problem with one so I can't speak to that issue. I will say that I don't wail on them or use an extension bar once I have established that a nut or bolt is frozen (common sense). So if you haven't figured it out yet I really like the GearWrench product. If you are just starting your tool set or an aspiring auto tech or handy man you can't go wrong investing in a GearWrench set (both metric and SAE - in as large a set as your budget will allow).
GEARWRENCH was the original patented ratcheting combination wrench. It has 72 teeth in the ratcheting end of the wrench. This allows using the ratcheting at a 5 degree movement in tight spaces. The wrenches can be turned over to tighten or loosen any nut or bolt. This is a quality wrench set which is strong allowing them to be able to apply torque perpendicular to the bolt or nut. The configuration of the ratcheting end eliminates rounding of the bolt head or nut. The design of the thin shanks allows for the wrenches to be used in the tightest places. Exceeds ANSI, DNI and federal torque specifications standards. I had previously purchased a metric set which I was very satisfied with the quality of the tools. Distributed by Apex Tool Group based out of Maryland.
Great quality tool, used these the first time this weekend to repair the AC. These work great when I needed to get into the tight areas to work on some long bolts that I could not get the deep wall ratchet in to. These saved the day for me, I think they put this AC system in the middle of the factory floor and built the car around it. With these I was able to get into some tight spots and use the box end. In one spot the bolt was too close to the bracket and need a "normal" box end wrench, boy did I miss the ratchetting feature of these. The finish of these wrenches is great, nice and smoothly polished. With the holder I simply hung them on the side of my toolbox, easy access and keeps me from digging through the pile of other wrenches I have in the draw of the ... Now that I have these, doubt I will be digging through the pile very often, I will go to these first.
I have a larger set of the ratcheting wrenches in both metric and SAE. But, I figured a smaller set would be great for those on the go types of jobs! There are seven wrenches in this set, and they are made by GearWrench. They come in a plastic tray with a locking retaining clip...kinda like a really sturdy zip tie. This fits through the slots holding the wrenches in place. I appreciate this kind of thinking as I’m always misplacing wrenches. The sizes range from 5/16 to 3/4 inch. They have open end wrench and a ratcheting box end. These are perfect for getting into tight spots. I added these to my existing GearWrench tool collection and am very happy with them. Quality made, these should hold up for many years and tasks to come.
The GearWrench model 9317 consists of 7 ratcheting wrenches - 5/16”, 3/8”, 7/16”, ½”, 9/16”, 5/8” and 3/4".They’re very nice wrenches; fit and finish is top notch and the ratcheting feature works smoothly. The chrome finish makes it easy to remove grime and dirt – but the finish can also make the wrenches a bit difficult to hold if your hands are greasy. In use these are great if you’re short on space – it can get tiresome of moving a fastener a few degrees, removing a wrench, repositioning, and repeating. The wrench slides over the bolt onto the nut and you’re good to go – again, the ratcheting action doesn’t require removal/repositioning of the wrench. The set comes in a tray that can be used to store the tools. The wrenches are well secured in the tray and can be mounted vertically on pegboard as well as in a toolbox (see photo below) drawer.Home Depot offers a 90-day return policy, and GearWrench offers a lifetime warranty on the tools.HTHRegards,Jim

This is the second set of GearWrench ratcheting wrenches that I have gotten, and I could not be happier with either of them. This is a 7 pc. SAE (English) set starting at 5/16 and ending at ¾” all packaged in a nice plastic storage tray that can be mounted vertically (with my metric set the wrenches fallout when mounted vertically, with this set they all stay in). The action feels firm with minimum wiggle or slop and has a sharp crisp engagement sound with each tooth. The box end ratcheting drive is manufactured with “off corner” or side loading to reduce the corner rounding and allowing much greater torquing power much like the TORX plus fasteners do. So, it acts like a 6 point when it is really a 12 point. All the wrenches are straight with a smooth bright chrome ... All the wrenches are straight with a smooth bright chrome finish and the whole design caters to being able to fit into tight spaces where limited movement can happen. The only small complaint that I have is that “On” or Off” is not identified on the associated side of the wrench. So, each time I go to use the box end I need to check how the ratchet is going and then flip accordingly. Great set of wrenches, well made, should last a long time, recommended.
