Very dsappointed with camera, I started the return procedure in the dead of the night on day of purchase and took it back the day after.Intened use: monitor childs nocturnal seizuresPros:It's Google; magnetic effortless placement; sleek design for indoors; super HD picture and super zoom-in; no delay live streaming on 5G wifi; 2-way audio; free cloud storage; can clear all recordings in google home app, easy setup and controlsCons:Misleading operations, a subscription is required to receive notification and save recordings beyond 3 hours not that you can store 3 hrs worth of recording at a time! (researched confirmed in google community support forum post that this is intended)Cannot simply detect any motion by change of "pixles" and only detect by preset categories of person, animal, or vehicle etc.Does not record intial detection and records too long after detection. examples: Notification when child sat up in the middle of the night but only recorded as they were laying back down. Notification when child woke up and ran out of the room in the morning but only recorded an empty room not even a blur of child. We are required to set max length to limit individual recordings (10s, 15s, etc). Therefore unfortunately if an event is longer than the max recording limit, it just stops recording the event. You wont be given a series of notifications and clips for the duration of the event.

Great quality, easy to set up. We added this after already having a few Nest cameras already, so this was a breeze. That said, nearly every Google product we have (and that is a LOT) leaves one, seemingly simple feature out. This is true with our Apple and MSFT products as well, but Google in particular seems to always leave out one or two things so that they can improve the product the following year and people go through a whole new round of upgrading (take Chromecast, for example: who like us has multiple generations of dongles collecting dust?). For Nest products - instead of out with the old in with the new, it's more like add to the old with the new but you still need the Nest app if you want to use original Nest features. With the latest Google Nest cameras, there are no "meaningful" alerts for heard events. It says animal alerts, but beware: that pertains only to living things that move. For those of us who have learned to rely on the doorbell or Hub Max to let us know when one of our dogs is barking, this is a disappointing bait and switch approach to selling products. The new cameras are able to tell you what it sees but not what it hears (unless it's a carbon monoxide or fire alarm, which is POINTLESS given the % of those systems that notify people and services in a more meaningful way). Thus, I can't say I don't like this product, the video is great and it took 60 seconds to set up. But this divide between original Nest and Google Nest stuff is getting frustrating. If you have therms and doorbells already, be prepared to open Nest and Home intentionally and errantly many, many times a day because you need them both and they start to look very similar.PS The battery life is just fine. Unless you want to watch the video from this device on highest resolution 24/7, don't listen to the battery bashers, they're always out there complaining about devices not being able to serve media up indefatigably. I haven't recharged this device since setting it up. I threw it in the middle of a yard to test battery life and video quality 65 feet and two walls away from the nearest Nest WiFi Pro access point. I tired making all the recommended setting adjustments from creating zones and increasing the sensitivity but nothing worked. As a new solution, I decided to get the $30 cord to keep it plugged in at all times. I also had to purchase the monthly subscription (over $100/yearly) if I wanted to be able to record continuously and view it later. This worked fairly, so while the “events” still missed activity I was able to go back and review the whole thing with the paid subscription.Other issues are with the Google Home app, it’s garbage. I have to disconnect from my wifi and connect to my cellular data in order to even use it. I don’t have a problem using my wifi for anything else except the Google Home app, it loads so slowly and usually wouldn’t even show events. The delay is pretty long too, when I get a notification and when I click the app it takes so long the event is over.Overall, the camera is expensive and the base functionality isn’t great, that with the extra amount I’ve had to pay on top of the initial cost makes it really not worth it for me. If it were less expensive I would have given it 3 stars. If you’re looking for a camera for non security reasons and don’t need recordings, it works fine for that. However there are cameras available for less than $50 that would do the same thing.

Great upgrade from my Xfinity cameras. I considered these because I am a Google user that has other Google Nest products on my home. The problem is that I had cameras from three different systems which means I had to go to three different apps to check any type of surveillance. My goal overall was to try to go to a single pane of glass meaning a single app for all of my surveillance inside and outside of my home. They had a benefit of going with the Google solution means that not only do I have a single pane of glass to surveil my entire property but it also integrates with my smoke detectors my doorbell my screens my television, lights, etc., so all of these things on a single app is beneficial and more efficient. This camera are sharp, the cloud device is great, and it integrates perfectly into my existing Google Home products. I also have Eufy cameras, which are better priced, but while they do integrate with Google Home, their integration is not as seamless. Also, one of the benefits of the new fees is the ability to record only to the base station. Issue here, is that the base station off and runs out of memory after you owned it for sometime so you tend to lose our travel footage. You can pay for cloud storage, but that is an added cost that brings it closer to in line with the Google offerings. Really caught a great deal of catching these open box. This really kicked the value option out of the park for me. This outdoor camera is great. Mounting can be tricky, make sure to take a few minutes to and plan out your mounting options. Dismounting to recharge is very easy, as it is held on with one of the strongest magnet is have ever seen for it's size. It is very secure. All of that said, I am running my with a solar panel. This is a lesson learned from other battery powered cameras I've owned. The benefit is that you can place them any and everywhere, but you have to climb a ladder every couple of months to dismount them and recharge the device. This. Gets. Old...solar panel are highly effective and I recommend this.
This camera seemed great at first, facial recognition, super clear picture, inexpensive cloud subscription... but it has some GLARING flaws. There is no way to get a date and time stamp on the recordings or downloads on ANY of the Gen 2 products. NONE. You also cannot download a custom clip on any of the Gen 2 products. For example, I want to download a 30 minute clip from yesterday... YOU CAN'T!! You can only download "motion" clips. Which means during that 30 minute span, you download about 10-15 short clips, PLUS you can ONLY DO IT FROM YOUR PHONE!! NOT A COMPUTER!!! So when you download it, you can't find it! You have to go searching through your photos app. Finally, this camera CANNOT BE ADDED TO THE NEST APP, it can only be added to the Google home app. If you ... MoreThis camera seemed great at first, facial recognition, super clear picture, inexpensive cloud subscription... but it has some GLARING flaws. You don't have a date and time stamp, AND you're stuck with a bunch of tiny clips that are a pain to get onto a computer. Then, you can't alter them by joining them together because there are gaps between the motion clips AND you e compromised the integrity of the original. I've contacted Google Nest support and requested a "legal hold" on the recordings, but so far the question is ignored. The rep stops responding or points me to a Google help article on how to download clips. Crazy right?I have the top level Nest Aware subscription and thought I was good to go with 60 days of 24-hours recording, but you're not. 100% NOT. I've contacted Nest support regarding the time stamp and the custom clip and was pointed to an article for the previous generation camera where you COULD download a custom clip, but the timestamp was buried as a subtitle and can only be seen by enabling "Track 1" in ONE app called VLC player. I found this after hours of research. I havent found a way to make VLC save the recording with the subtitle "always on." An attorney or judge probably won't take the time to download VLC and follow your intricate directions on how to see the time stamp, which could put people in a precarious position. Lol. This also ONLY applies to the Gen 1 camera which DOES NOT support facial recognition. ONLY the Gen 1 cameras have the date and time stamp buried as a "subtitle."FYI: ALL OF THIS ALSO APPLIES TO THE GOOGLE DOORBELL (BATTERY)I hope this review helps you when deciding to purchase a camera product.
I have 8 of these cameras and they have never performed as advertised. A total waste of over $2000. ""These cameras are not fit for purpose at all and never have been"". The cameras constantly go offline for no reason even with a strong wifi signal. The talk to talk is so delayed its unusable. The event notifications are always late and can be hours late or never arrive at all. The battery usage is ridiculous they need constant recharging. The data usage is abhorrent even when turned off "as in not active" the cameras use up to 500mb in a 24 hour period "yes even when not active". The movement sensor used is pathetic 4 to 5 meters is the furthest distance the cameras movement sensor will wake up to start recording any further than that the cameras do not wake up so they're rendered useless again. Video footage is grainy and second rate. Sound recording is horrible. I could keep writing for ages as to how bad these cameras are. THESE CAMERAS ARE SIMPLY NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE DO NOT BUY THESE CAMERAS. HEED THIS WARNING CONSUMERS YOU WILL REGRET BUYING THESE CAMERAS. WALK AWAY BUY ANOTHER BRAND OF CAMERA
Overall a well integrated Google product, seemless connectivity with Google home, which works on Apple and Android. After 11 months of usage, no issues with connectivity, was able access the camera remotely, even from otherside of planet , thanks to powerof Internet. Got two cameras, one is flickering in the night, looks like IR (infra red) module could be broken. Functinality in Day is good. Is battery powered, however needs charging, but also can take external power. So if you are planning for leaving long term 2 weeks or more, recommend buying external cable, costs extra. Also has magnetic bases, gives flexibility with installing on doors without additional tools. This is my first Google/Nest camera; I’ve been eager to try them for quite some time and just hadn’t taken the plunge until now. I’ve used cameras from several other vendors over the years -- Logitech, Reolink, Ubiquiti, Ring, etc -- so I’m not new to security cameras, just to Google's take on them. I’m pretty deep into the Google Home ecosystem and was really hoping this would play well with the rest of my Home. I’ve had this camera setup for a few days now and here are my observations. I’ll start with the summary and then flesh out the specifics.Overall: Video quality is good, and the Nest Aware free trial adds some truly advanced features (30 days of video event retention, “familiar faces”, auto calling emergency services) that you’ll want if you intend to use ... MoreThis is my first Google/Nest camera; I’ve been eager to try them for quite some time and just hadn’t taken the plunge until now. I’ll start with the summary and then flesh out the specifics.Overall: Video quality is good, and the Nest Aware free trial adds some truly advanced features (30 days of video event retention, “familiar faces”, auto calling emergency services) that you’ll want if you intend to use this for actual security monitoring -- most notable is that without a subscription you are allowed a paltry 3 hours of video event history. 3 hours of video event history is just too short to be of much use for security purposes, a limit which seems remarkably short for no other reason than to drive buyers to at least the basic Nest Aware subscription. My prior experience with Logitech Circle cameras, which I consider fairly direct competition to this, leads me to expect no less than a 24h video review window without an add’l subscription, so Google allowing just 3h by default is very disappointing. Although there’s a lot I like about this camera I have to say that “disappointing” sums up a lot of it. It does a lot of things right, and it clearly has potential, but until/unless Google updates the cameras and/or the software there’s just too much “basic” info and options missing for me to recommend these to anyone at this time.Security events: As a consultant for several schools and businesses I’ve had to export security events for Police several times and one thing that stood out to me very quickly about this system is that there is no option to overlay a date/time stamp on the video. The camera does overlay its own logo in the upper right of the video, so clearly it can do overlays, but Google has oddly decided not to even give the user the option to overlay such basic video information. You can export events with the Home app and I was hoping the exported filenames would at least contain useful data -- but it appears the filenames are based on a Unix Epoch timestamp but one which doesn’t obviously correlate to the actual time of the incident so I’m not sure what Google’s up to, perhaps the resemblance to a Unix Epoch time is strangely coincidental? Regardless, The filenames for exported events are consistent but not particularly useful, so if you find yourself needing to export events you’ll want to make your own careful notes about the times involved. In the old Nest app you could export and embed timestamps into the “closed caption” data but the Home app currently provides no such option which is another little disappointment.Notifications: The app has a lot of notification options -- it can distinguish people, animal, and vehicle events for example -- and all of which can be turned on/off by their type, or which can be configured to only trigger when it detects you’re “away”. Unfortunately, text and email notifications aren’t even an option -- you either get them on the app or you don’t get them at all. Not necessarily bad but pretty limited compared to other camera notification systems I’ve used.Video: Daytime video quality is excellent. It’s HD HDR which looks good and zooms in quite nicely though you won’t be reading license plates unless the vehicle comes very close to the camera. I’ve attached some sample screen-captured samples to this review. Nighttime video quality is respectably normal-ish for this range of camera.Battery: I’ve had mine less than a week but after a few days of activity to adjust the app estimates I’ll get 3-4 weeks of monitoring from a single charge.
After a week with these new cameras, I'm baffled by design choices that Google made compared to the previous generation of Nest cameras. While these cameras look like they're built well, and they install easily, that's about the end of the pros.In order to view footage from these cameras, you have to use the Google Home app instead of the Nest app. This means that if you're an existing user with other cameras, thermostats, etc. you now need a second app and you can't view all your cameras in one spot. Even worse, there is no web interface for the Home app, so you have to manage everything on your phone with multiple apps.Secondly, even though this product is a multi-pack, it only comes with one charging cable for the cameras. Even worse, there is no web interface for the Home app, so you have to manage everything on your phone with multiple apps.Secondly, even though this product is a multi-pack, it only comes with one charging cable for the cameras. This means that when it eventually comes time to charge your cameras, you'll have to do so one at a time. You can reach out to Google support and they'll send you another charging cable if you ask for it, but it's an odd choice to not include in the box.The cameras don't constantly stream footage (to preserve battery life). This means that when you want to check what's going on (if you remember to use the right app), the camera will often report being in an "idle" state. You then have to try and get it to stream live video, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.Lastly and most disappointing, the battery life is nowhere near close to the advertised details; I charged the camera to 95% when I installed it, and a week later it's down to 30% and tells me there is 2 days battery life remaining.I would not recommend this camera to anyone unless they have very specific use cases in low-traffic areas, where removing and recharging the camera won't be a bother, and only if this is your first Nest product.
I was so excited to get this but was extremely let down. Long story short it requires a subscription, the battery life is a joke, and it is absolutely TERRIBLE at detecting & recording movement AKA not helpful for security at all. First off, you need a subscription to do anything except view the live feed. There’s one level where you pay for restricted recording and history that auto deletes at a specific amount of days, or you pay more and get unlimited recording and saving. Second, if you have all notifications/recording on, the battery lasts MAYBE 2 days. If you have half the notifications/recording on, you get up to a week if nothing happens. I had to turn off all notifications and really restrict the movement it records to get this to last 1 week at a time ... MoreI was so excited to get this but was extremely let down. I had to turn off all notifications and really restrict the movement it records to get this to last 1 week at a time before I have to recharge it. I purchased this BATTERY camera because the ideal place for it does not have access to a plug unless I trail an extension cord along the floor or ceiling. Another big con is with the limited recording AKA can never and will never record the entire time, it will ONLY record when there is movement. This thing is so so bad at “detecting” movement. I will be moving all around my apartment for hours and the camera will MAYBE detect my movement once, unless I’m super close to the camera. When I try to use it to watch my dog, it doesn’t detect his movements at all so I can’t see anything since there is no recordings to watch. Do not purchase this camera. If you are set on getting a camera from google, get the regular plug in kind since the battery barely adds any life. Even better, to purchase a cheaper version on a big marketplace website (hint hint) that’s actually worth the money. Also if you do decide to keep this plugged in, you’ll have to purchase additional pieces for it to stand upright, another non-win for the item. P.S. I figured since this is so easily portable I could hook it up and use it at other places. NOT the case, trying to make it work has completely wiped the history and now it won’t even work with my regular home Wifi/google devices and is now a piece of junk taking up space.
