There is a reason for that and that is because GoPro makes great cameras that can go pretty much anywhere, take great video, and said video is very easy to work with. The HERO12 Black Action Camera Bundle is no exception to this rule, and if you don't already have a GoPro and need/want to take great video pretty much anywhere your heart desires, it's the one to get. If you already have a HERO10, I'd probably do the upgrade, if you have HERO11, I probably wouldn't.I've been playing with the HERO12 now for about a week and I have some thoughts both good and bad, and maybe a bit indifferent.Good:Phenomenal Video Quality In Bright Light: Daytime outdoor footage and well-lit indoor footage is top-notch. Grain is minimal and colors are bright using the standard set-up.8:7 Sensor Format: I LOVE this format! While it takes a bit more forethought and imagination to ensure that you are framing things correctly, the versatility you have in post-production with this 'full-frame' image is outstanding.GP-Log: While I'm not great at color-grading, my colleagues wouldn't have it any other way, and being able to shoot video in 'Log' gives you the ability to maximize your colors and tweak them to fit whatever you are trying to create.Hypersmooth 6.0: In some ways this is actually better than a gimbal mounted camera since it also helps with the Z-axis. Yes, you lose some of you frame as the software adjusts things, but it does it so butter smooth and seamlessly, that it is worth it. Doing horizon lock is almost voodoo magic.Voice Control: Works flawlessly straight out of the box with no 'training'.Action Bundle: A very good value if you intend to be filming in rugged terrain or near water. The case is solid and holds everything nicely, and the extra battery is almost required. The Camera Itself: Solid build, responsive and bright screens both front and back.New Mounting System: Hallelujah, GoPro has finally loosened their grip on mounting accessories! Now you aren't forced to only use the GoPro 'finger' mount system and can now also use regular threaded mounts that are found pretty much everywhere else in the photo/videographer world.Indifferent:GoPro QUIK: Won't be using it much so I really don't care about it but it is enraging to find editing tools hidden behind a paywall and to be bombarded with upsell prompts.Charge Time: It took 90 and 91 minutes to charge the two batteries in this pack via the camera, a Thunderbolt 3 cable, and 100w charger. Now I understand that these are the Enduro batteries with 1720mAh capacity, but man did that feel like a long time. Supposedly the HERO12 is supposed to charge faster than ever before, but it seemed like forever to me. I'll probably get the dual battery charger just to make things a bit more seamless if not faster.Battery Capacity Indicator: This isn't so much indifferent as it is 'weird'. It might be a software glitch that will go away with the next firmware update but the capacity of the battery changes when I change modes. Now I would expect that the TIME left on the battery should change wildly when switching modes due to the different power requirements, but the absolute capacity of the battery as a percentage, should NOT change. I was getting fluctuations of almost 10%.No GPS: This is another thing I never used on previous GoPros so I won't miss it, but others might.Bluetooth Headphone/Mic: While appreciated that it is there, I'll never use it because I've yet to find a bluetooth headset that records audio/dialogue better than a dedicated microphone.Bad:GoPro Subscription Assault: Look, I get it. The HERO12 is sold at a pretty competitive price, and subscriptions are all the rage now from all kinds of manufacturers, but please quit asking me to pay for an annual subscription once I say no the first time! I'm not saying the subscription isn't worth it because for a lot of people it will be, especially at the 50% off they are offering right now. If you plan to do all your editing in QUIK, want your video in the cloud, and plan on buying a lot of accessories, it's a great value. But once I say no, please stop asking.Low Light Filming: Other than doing star/automobile trails, the GoPro is not the best out there for nighttime filming. That's my take on the GoPro HERO12. If you are looking for the best action camera out there and don't already have a recent edition GoPro, this is the one to get. If you have another recent GoPro, I'm not quite sure the upgrades, which are mostly on the software/firmware side, are worth it. Have fun filming, and be safe.

The front screen is quite a bit smaller but it’s enough to provide limited information, but more importantly, there’s enough screen to make sure you’re in frame. The power button and action buttons are a bit stiff but easy to press but not easy to accidentally press. The door hinge to access the memory and battery compartment is very stiff. I imagine this is to help with the water resistance, but it takes quite a bit of finger strength to work it loose for the first few times. The picture quality is fantastic. I took some indoor shots in a darker environment which had very good low light capture. But outdoor photos is where this shines. There is an excellent balance between warm and cool colors that look very natural. I did most of my recording in 5k 60fps, because why not? You can adjust the framing for a very wide capture albeit with a bit of fish eye effect, but I used the linear framing which worked just fine. With all the settings I’ve tinkered with, my videos have come out as MP4 which has a high level of compatibility. There are settings you can adjust which provides more flexibility in editing software, but so far, I’ve only seen MP4.The orientation lock ensures you get a stable video that stays level with the horizon. You can rotate the camera a full 360 on the z-axis and keep your picture upright. For example, if you’re using the selfie stick and walking, you have increased stabilization from bounce but also if you adjust your arm or if you need to rotate to avoid an obstacle, your shot is always in the right orientation.Setup using the GoPro Quick app was seamless and provided a quick way to get the GoPro connected to the WiFi and provide updates. You can also manage cloud storage and downloads from the app as well as controlling the functions of the camera including starting a recording or a capture, live streaming, downloading media to your phone or cloud (must subscribe to GoPro service). The screen controls are intuitive and easy to use. Options are accessed by either selecting from options on the screen on swiping from the edges of the screen. You can change modes, by swiping right or left from the edges of the screen. Swipe down for additional options and preferences, and swipe up to replay videos and view photos. Additionally there are onscreen options that allow you to change resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, orientation, and much more. What’s great is the amount of customization if you like your videos to have a certain look or if you prefer to capture lower quality but higher frame rate for great slow-motion shots or in a quality that can be quickly uploaded to the internet. There’s a pro settings option that opens some more fine tune settings if you want to customize even further with savable profiles if you have certain settings you prefer for different environments which make switching super easy to do.The action camera bundle comes with great accessories that help make sure you can get some of the best possible footage. GoPro has a great mounting system which allows you to mount it on pretty much anything. There’s an included floating grip (selfie stick is how I would explain this to most people) and headband mount as well as a singular mount you can stick to almost any surface using the 3M sticky pad already placed on the underside. The headband is fairly comfortable. I have a bit of a large head but it fit well. My only complaint is the side adjustment sat right above my ear so it was a little uncomfortable, but not a deal breaker. The best part is they give you two batteries and two mounting screws so you can quickly switch between mounting gear and you have enough batteries included for hours of video and capture. Luckily, if you find yourself needing more batteries, I was happy to see that they do not charge overly expensive prices for their official batteries. There’s a reason a GoPro is a household name at this point. They’re fantastic camera’s that you know by name. This isn’t any exception. With a ton of features, ease of use, fantastic video quality and stability, it’s not hard to choose this as your camera on the go. This bundle comes with accessories to get you started on your action camera journey.

In this review, we're diving into what sets the GoPro Hero 12 Bundle apart in the world of compact, high-performance cameras. Let's see if we find any new tricks in this familiar companion.Kicking it off from the top, after opening up the hard-fabric carrying case, you're greeted with quite a few pamphlets and some neatly wrapped items. Starting from top-left and moving to the right, we have the Head Strap 2.0 headband, which is rather comfortable, soft, and easily adjustable. Then we have the GoPro Hero12 itself, we'll come back to that. Next to the camera is our GoPro mounting hardware for The Handler+, 2 Enduro Batteries, and a curved adhesive mount, which fits soundly on most helmets. 2 bolts are included for fastening the GoPro Hero12 to its various mounting attachments. The accessories themselves feel solid, you'll be hard pressed to break The Handler or the Head Strap 2.0 unless you're really trying. Both accessories are comfortable to mount/hold and easy to use, so you'll find them enjoyable to use. Albeit, I couldn't imagine a more simple accessory than The Handler, since it's just a bit of foam wrapped around a plastic handle. For anyone whose curious, GoPro does offer a more fully featured battery grip accessory available for the Hero12, along with a whole bunch of other options for anyone looking to get the most out of their GoPro. As you'd expect, the GoPro's camera mounting process is as simple as ever. Just open the tabs on the bottom of the Hero12, slide the Hero12 into the accessory, and tighten the bolt. Quick and simple. So, what are we working with hardware-wise? The Hero12 is equipped with 1/1.9″ image sensor and an f/2.5 aperture lens. Compared to the Hero11, the aspect ratio was changed from 4:3 to 8:7 – and with good reason! 8:7 enables the "Full Frame" view, which makes this GoPro pretty darn versatile. No matter what content you plan to post online, you can get high quality 5.3K video footage and downscale as needed. This enables high quality vertical video for all the best social media formats, including TikTok, Instagram Stories, and YouTube Shorts. For those who don't work with vertical content, they'll appreciate being able to take a wide-view 5.3K shot, crop it, and get beautiful 4K footage. The Hero 12 is capable of shooting HDR (High Dynamic Range) video in various formats: it can record in 4K with an 8:7 aspect ratio at up to 30 fps, in 5.3K with a 16:9 aspect ratio also at up to 30 fps, and in 4K with a 16:9 aspect ratio at up to 60 fps. The dimensions of the GoPro Hero 12 Black are 2.79 inches in width, 2.16 inches in height, and 1.32 inches in depth, with a weight of 153 grams. Turning our heads over to the screens on this unit, the rear LCD screen measures 2.27 inches diagonally, and the front LCD screen is 1.4 inches diagonally. While the Hero12 does not include any internal storage for storing pictures and footage, it does support microSD cards up to 1TB in size. Be sure to use a modern and fast microSD card – the minimum requirements are V30 with a UHS 3 rating. Not to be forgotten, the Enduro lithium-ion batteries are pretty strong as well, boasting 1720 mAh of battery life. This is an important detail – not just because having more recording time is nice, but because cold weather can sap battery life from a device like this rapidly. While numerous electronic gadgets might offer an optional software upgrade for newer models, the Hero 12 makes this update mandatory before initial use. There's a prominent label and a card on the camera stating, "Your camera must be updated before you can use it." After updating, the tactile, rubberized surface of the Hero 12 is immediately noticeable, giving a feeling of quality and heftiness. Flipping through the settings, a few features made themselves apparent right away. There's the addition of wireless timecode synchronization, which allows for the simultaneous use of multiple GoPros. Bluetooth audio support is a bonus as well, enabling audio recording from earbuds and voice commands to the Hero12 via Bluetooth headset mics. Be sure to try this out, it's definitely an underrated feature.Once you start using the device, its performance is consistently outstanding. I've only recorded 4K+ footage in cooler environments so far, without encountering any issues with choppy playback or device overheating. However, I anticipate that in warmer climates, the performance might differ. High-performance cameras typically require a cooldown period after extensive use.The Hero12's video stabilization is remarkable, featuring the advanced HyperSmooth 6.0. At this stage in GoPro's evolution, their stabilization technology is hard to fault, being both impressive and fluid. The camera's wide-angle lens options extend to a 122° horizontal (151° diagonal) field of view in 16:9 format. The array of resolutions, aspect ratios, and features like time-lapse, slow-motion, horizon-lock, and exceptional stabilization lead to stunning video output. Remember to consider your lighting conditions, as the Hero12, despite its f2.5 aperture, performs best in well-lit settings. You'll want to provide it a little more than a single lone light at night, which I learned while recording some test footage in my garage. The "Easy" mode is a delight for users of all skill levels, simplifying the process of creating high-quality videos. Just select your desired aspect ratio and resolution, and start recording. For those who prefer more control, the "Pro" mode offers comprehensive customization options, including HDR/Standard video selection, aspect ratios, resolutions, frame rates, lens views, and much more. The GoPro Hero 12 Bundle stands out as a versatile and high-performing option in the compact camera market. Its impressive features like the advanced HyperSmooth 6.0 stabilization, wide-angle lens, and various shooting modes make it an excellent choice for creators of all levels. Whether you're capturing fast-paced action or crafting carefully framed shots, the Hero 12 offers quality and ease of use that's hard to beat. I recommend the GoPro Hero 12 Bundle for anyone seeking a reliable, feature-rich camera that excels in a variety of settings and applications. It's tools like this that bring creative ideas to life easily and that's pretty magical.

The GoPro Hero 12 Black offers a number of significant upgrades and improvements over the Hero 11 and one significant downgrade. The Hero 12 uses the same processor and image sensor as the Hero 11. Many of the new features are in aid of content creation post-production and video professionals. While most seem to be firmware enhancements rather than new hardware capabilities, there is one really significant hardware improvement, the addition of a standard tripod threaded mount. Yay!I'm a cyclist and primarily use the GoPro cycling, although I'm starting to use it more for general videos. While most seem to be firmware enhancements rather than new hardware capabilities, there is one really significant hardware improvement, the addition of a standard tripod threaded mount. Yay!I'm a cyclist and primarily use the GoPro cycling, although I'm starting to use it more for general videos. While cycling, I use a handlebar mount, helmet mount and chest mount for different perspectives. I also used the GoPro for passing sequences, mounted on a tripod and on the hand mount included in the bundle. I'm not an expert by any means, but I have started doing some post-production video processing utilizing some of the new features of the Hero 12.The longer battery life is a welcome improvement, anywhere from (in my experience) 15% to 40% better than the Hero 11, with the most improvement at the higher resolution/frame rates. The image stabilization is still the best in the industry and HyperSmooth 6.0 is the best yet. Not only is it more stable, but the image shrinkage seems to be less. The addition of HDR video modes (and GP-log if I ever figure out how to use it properly) bring out better color in bright, high contrast scenes. The new video modes, especially 8:7 video, will prove especially useful. I really like the 8:7 format as it lets you switch easily between horizontal(think YouTube) or vertical(TikTok) formats in post-production.For the post-production geeks (getting there, but not quite there yet) there is timecode sync to syncronize multiple videos and GPlog and LUT metadata to assist in color grading. One feature that slipped under the radar is the new Bluetooth audio capabilities. Not only can you use a remote Bluetooth mike, but the Hero 12 will record separate tracks for the local mike and the Bluetooth mike, so you can choose which to use later. Additionally, and more important to me, the Hero 12 will respond to voice commands over Bluetooth. The voice commands all worked flawlessly without any training or other setup. The Hero 12 is also the first GoPro that will pair with more than one device at a time (up to 6, I believe). The Hero 12 is supposed to be better about not overheating than previous GoPros. I've never had any issues with a GoPro overheating, even on 95 degree days, but for the most part my longer videos are all on a moving bike with lots of air flow. The one downgrade was the removal of the GPS from the Hero 12. GoPro claims very few ever used the feature. While I never used the overlay feature, it was nice to have the geotag metadata to insert clips or stills on maps. The one thing I wish GoPro would improve is the charge time on their batteries. 90 minutes to a full charge is pretty annoying! The good news is that the bundle includes a second battery along with a nice case, the surprisingly useful stick handle, and a head mount. The GoPro Hero 12 Black offers spectacular daylight video and best in class stabilization. The new features, while not earthshattering, offer a lot of new function for both the enthusiast and professional with no increase in price. Highly recommended!

Also, the Hero 12 can record in 10-bit HDR and Log. However, framerates are cut in half when recording in HDR. 8:7 aspect ratio sensor allows for both widescreen and vertical recording, no matter the orientation of the camera. The fisheye lens has numerous Field of View settings, including a linear setting which removes the fisheye effect and a horizon lock which stabilizes the video up to 27 degrees of tilt. The fidelity and specs of the Hero 12 are impressive to say the least, especially considering its compact formfactor. In practice, the video quality is crisp and colorful no matter the recording mode. The user interface of the camera is intuitive with its familiar touchscreen. Large, tactile rubberized buttons for power/mode, and recording is a notable feature. Swiping left and right effortlessly transitions the camera from timelapse, video, and picture modes. Dragging up from the bottom exposes the gallery/media player where all locally stored videos/pictures can be viewed. Functions like basic editing, aided by the integrated speaker, can be achieved through the media player as well. Pulling down from the top of the screen reveals a familiar dropdown menu akin to modern smartphones. It is in this menu where options such as orientation lock, storage, and full settings can be accessed.Camera has 2 distinct UI modes. “Easy and Pro”. The easy mode is suitable for most use cases with 3 preset recording qualities from 1080p, 4k, and 5.3k. However, the Pro mode unlocks the full functionality and tweakability of the camera as each recording parameter can be adjusted to the heart’s content. In this mode, users can create and save recording presets for different scenarios. This camera was designed both for the adventurer who wants effortless plug-and-play action, and the experienced cinematographer who enjoys the full controls of the camera. The accessory bundle comes equipped with a carrying case, headstrap, floating hand grip, adhesive mount, and two batteries. The headstrap is comfortable, well-padded, and easy to adjust. With the action cam weighing in at only 4.5 oz it sits firmly on the wearer’s head, even for long periods of time. The floating hand grip has a large, comfortable foam handle and a flame orange end cap in case it gets dropped in the water. As an aside, the Hero 12 is waterproof up to 33 feet. The included quick release mount was simple to install and works with many GoPro accessories. If the included accessories aren’t enough, GoPro supplies many more accessories to suit almost every need. From numerous camera cases, mounts, and even a wide-angle lens, the possibilities and truly endless.Accompanying the Hero 12 is the GoPro Quik app. App connects and syncs with the GoPro during setup. It allows you to view, download, and edit GoPro footage on the fly. Upon initial setup, it enabled me to update camera firmware as well. App is easy to navigate and understand.A subscription service unlocks more premium features and perks like unlimited cloud storage, GoPro auto upload to cloud, discounts on the GoPro store, and a guaranteed camera replacement among others. Normally, am not a big fan of subscription services as nowadays core features are blocked behind paywalls. However, all core features and functionality of the GoPro and app are available for free, and the low cost of the subscription ($4.99 per month or $24.99 annually at the time of review) makes it worthwhile for those who desire the extra perks.Personally, I have used this camera and accessories to timelapse car trips and record POV videos working on my car. Have been thrilled at the ease of use of the camera and am excited for the weather to warm up to record fishing videos on my kayak!Overall, the GoPro Hero 12 is the no-compromise solution for effortless, quality clips for the true adventurer and content creator.
I had been using an older Kodak HD camera, but it died recently, so it was time for an upgrade. This camera is a lot better overall, and the wireless integration seems like a nice feature, but I could not get my iPhone 15 to recognize it within the app. So far, I've just transferred the videos directly to my laptop, which is what I've done with the Kodak.I'm using it a car for when I'm driving on a track. The Image quality is really good, and field of view is more than what I got with the Kodak. The camera does a decent job of filtering out wind noise. I was hoping there'd be a way to integrate an external mic, but I haven't researched enough to see if that's possible. With the noise cancellation, I am beginning to wonder if it's even necessary. I ended up getting 60-70 minutes of battery life for video. I just hopped on the GoPro bandwagon, so I don't know if that's bad or good. The accessory pack is good, although the image shown is a little misleading. It seems to imply that you're getting a second battery. My kit did not include a battery (one came with the camera). That's when I read the Details of the listing, which doesn't list a battery, yet there it is in the photo (to the left of the Memory card adapter). I also can't remember if I got a memory card, because I ordered several of the same size and capacity as the one in this kit, they both arrived around the same time. Otherwise, all of the accessory brackets and such are decent, and necessary. If the GoPro package itself had an adapter to a standard camera mount, I might not have purchased the kit. The tripod is ok, but small, and I will probably make use of the Selfie Stick, if only to annoy other people around me. I'm not really complaining about the kit, and it's hard to argue against it, because it's a really good value for what you get. Who knows? Maybe I'll use it on a boat, and use the yellow float attachment, or maybe I'll attach it to my helmet at some point, and the accessory case is really good if you need to hold just the essentials for your trip, like a couple batteries and a charger, charging and transfer cables, and the mount pieces you need.
Overall, this is a really impressive camera! I’ve never used a GoPro before, so this is my first experience with the brand, and I must say it is a great camera. You always see the promotional footage from these as action shots of extreme sports, but I think it can be used for so much more. Yes, it is great for high-resolution videos that can be slowed down to 12.5% and still be perfectly clear, but the image stabilization is also amazing, and the sound through the stock microphone is also amazing. I’ve been making YouTube videos for years at this point, always on a budget. I’ve been using my cell phone with a Rode microphone attached, and this sounds just as good. It even registers as a higher volume than the Rode, making editing easier.I can imagine using this ... MoreOverall, this is a really impressive camera! I’m excited to try it with perhaps the media attachment or the external microphone connector to see if it can be improved, but overall this is an amazing camera. Looks like my channel will be in 4k or higher going forward! The only downside that I've experienced is one of the two batteries that I received in the package is completely faulty. After reaching out to GoPro about this, I've had no response for more than a week. Hopefully you won't have this issue.
It’s been years since I got my last GoPro camera which was the Hero 7. I loved it at the time so was happy to try the latest GoPro Hero 12 and in this case the action camera bundle. Unboxing you’ll find the camera and accessories nicely packed in a well made carrying case. Inside you get a floating hand grip, the Headstrap 2.0, a curved adhesive mount, a mounting buckle & thumb screw, 2 Enduro batteries, a usb C cable, and some manuals. Please note that no micro sd card is included. With the price of sd cards so low one would think at least a 128gb card would be included so you’re ready for use right out of the box. Make sure to get a v30 or UHS-3 card. I do however appreciate that two 1720 mAh batteries are included in this bundle and which provide at least an hour ... Make sure to get a v30 or UHS-3 card. I do however appreciate that two 1720 mAh batteries are included in this bundle and which provide at least an hour of shooting time each regardless of resolution.I popped in a battery, my sd card, and started charging. You get a usb C cable but no charging adapter which is fine because we all have plenty of them on hand. A card with a QR code directs you to the GoPro Quik app and instructs to update the camera before use. I already had the app so I just proceeded to adding a new camera. The app simply walks you through this process step by step including connecting to your wifi network and updating the firmware. You have to update before using the camera. Setup and update took less than 15 minutes. The GoPro itself has a black and blue speckled appearance with a slightly grippy texture. These cams are meant to take abuse so it is resilient and solid feeling. The Hero 12 is also waterproof to 33 feet and the lens is hydrophobic for clear shots of all your water sport adventures. The included floating grip will prove valuable for these situations.I got out my old cam for quick comparison to discover that the GoPro has grown up, now slightly larger in all dimensions with a larger lens and displays. I was eager to next discover what other improvements awaited me. First off the image quality has been improved with video resolution of 5.3K, high dynamic range photo and video capabilities and 27 megapixel photos. All of which was dramatically evident as I tested video and photo camera modes. Videos were rich, detailed, with vibrant color reproduction. Image stabilization with HyperSmooth 6.0 is impressive and is certainly far more advanced than my old Hero. Still not as good as a gimbal but very close. Adjusting modes and settings is a breeze with the onscreen interface by swiping down, up, left, or right you access every setting and function. I also like that you can display these menus in either a simplified easy mode with basic settings to a much more detailed pro option with endless settings. The GoPro Quick app mirrors all these options. I love using the app to make these adjustments simply because of the increased ease of manipulating settings on a much larger screen. I do wish that the front display was also a touch screen where you could adjust settings. Instead it acts mainly as a forward facing display of what the camera sees. Great for selfies. Another great addition is the 1/4-20 tripod mount on the bottom of this GoPro between two mounting fingers, both of which offer versatile and simplified mounting options. The Hero 12 also supports bluetooth earbuds and wireless mics. I don’t own a mic but with this feature just pair your AirPods and you have wireless mic capabilities plus you can use remote voice commands. It’s great experimenting with settings and I look forward to playing with the built in Night Effects modes including Star Trails, Vehicle Lights and Light Painting. I am truly impressed with the GoPro Hero 12 and I look forward to letting my creativity run wild with this camera.

The superior high-definition video recording, rich feature set, user friendly interface to the countless features, and robust performance and physical durability make GoPro my favorite! The GoPro Hero 12 Black Action Camera is an evolution of the Hero series, with a few changes from the Hero 11 which preceded it. The excellent video stabilization has evolved from HyperSmooth 5.0 to HyperSmooth 6.0. There are some changes to the available video resolution and frame rate combinations, including the addition of 9:16 aspect ratio, and elimination of all 4:3 ratio permutations, essentially replacing 4:3 with the 8:7 aspect ratio. Wireless timecode synchronization has been added, supporting use of multiple GoPro cameras in synchronous, as well as support for Bluetooth wireless audio (although the three internal microphones do a great job producing high quality audio, even without the availability of a “dead cat” to mitigate wind noise). However, if being proximate to the camera is not possible, pairing earbuds allows both audio recording from the earbuds as well as using the GoPro voice commands via the earbuds. GoPro also claims that the Hero 12 will provide longer battery life, but your mileage may vary given the many variables which affect runtime. The additional feature of interval still photos (nine settings from 0.5 seconds to 2 minutes), complements the excellent still photo capabilities which include versatile burst photo and night photo modes. The Hero 12, like the 11, has a 1/1.9”, 27 MP sensor. A notable improvement is that the Hero 12 shoots HDR (High Dynamic Range) video in 4K - 8:7 (up to 30 fps), 5.3K - 16:9 (up to 30 fps), and 4K - 16:9 (up to 60 fps). One feature has been removed to my great disappointment. The Hero 12 does not have GPS, which is a shame. GPS functionality had been integrated in the Hero 5 through Hero 11. For activities where time, speed and distance or altitude are part of the adventure, such as motorsports, snow sports, boating, rock/mountain climbing and aviation, among many other activities, GPS data and video overlay of the data can be very important. Removing GPS from the Hero 12 Black was not sensible in my opinion. There is a thread on the GoPro site where a GoPro employee responded to a user that the company found that very few customers used the GPS functionality, and it was removed from the Hero 12 to extend battery runtime. However, GPS was not turned on by default, and on the GoPro webpage which provides instructions for the use of GPS on the numerous prior models, GoPro states, “Does not have much of an impact on battery life”. The loss of the GPS feature may be a dealbreaker for some potential buyers. The Hero 12 Black arrives in the zippered “hard” storage case which is part of this bundled package. The camera and the included accessories are organized within a cardboard divider. There is insufficient room to store additional accessories in the case, however. The Hero 12 camera has the same compact and lightweight body dimensions of the Hero 11, measuring approximately 2” H x 2-13/16” W x 1-5/16” D (approximately 7.2 cm x 5.1cm x 3.4 cm) and weighing only 5.4 ounces (153 grams) with the Enduro battery installed. The black plastic camera body is comprised of three sections. The front and rear sections are a rubberized material, which now has blue speckles throughout. The center, core section remains hard, black plastic. The Hero 12 has an approximately 2.25” rear display touchscreen, as well as a just under 1.5” front, display-only color LCD screen. The camera body has a gasketed/sealed door for battery and microSD card access. GoPro claims that the body is waterproof to 10 meters (33 feet) without the optional, waterproof housing, or 60 meters (196 feet) with the protective-dive housing. I have never seen any IP ratings or testing standards, including drop testing, for GoPro, however.GoPro does not include the required microSD card. It would be nice if a memory card was included with the camera to facilitate the immediate use of the GoPro Hero camera without the need to procure a necessity separately. I use SanDisk Extreme (or Extreme Pro, when available) cards and find them to work very well with the GoPro. The minimum requirement is V30, UHS 3 rating, and the GoPro will work with up to the 1 TB capacity SanDisk cards. This bundle includes:• GoPro Hero 12 Black Action Camera• Two Enduro Batteries• The Handler grip• Head Strap 2.0• Carrying Case• One Curved Adhesive Mount• One Quick-Release Mounting BuckleGoPro has an extensive collection of mounts and other accessories to select from. In addition to the folding fingers mount, the ¼”-20 standard tripod bushing is a real benefit. The 1720 mAh Enduro lithium-ion batteries which are supplied with the Hero 12 (and Hero 11) have superior extended performance and cold weather performance than the older, standard batteries. Since recording time is directly related to camera settings and utilization, as well as ambient temperature, having multiple batteries is a necessity. Since charging a battery in the camera body via USB requires several hours, and obviously only one battery at a time can be charged in the camera, it is almost a necessity to have an external battery charger. It would be nice if the GoPro Dual Battery Charger was included with the camera. The Handler shooting grip is buoyant and has a blaze orange endcap along with a wrist strap. It is nice for handheld shooting, especially with water sports. The Head Strap 2.0 is great for handsfree shooting, and includes a removable mounting clip which can attach the camera to clothing or a belt, for example. The zipper closure, “hard” storage case is a convenient means of protecting the Hero 12 and some accessories when not in use.The initial setup of the Hero 12 was a less than optimal process.Although many electronic devices may have a software update “available” for a new device, the Hero 12 “requires” a software update prior to being usable. There is both a large card and a sticker on the camera declaring, “Your camera must be updated before you can use it”.What should have been a quick and easy process immediately failed. After installing a new microSD card and an included battery, the camera boots to screens for selecting the user language and a couple of other basics, whereupon it lands on a screen directing the user to use the GoPro Quik smartphone app to continue with the software update and activation of the Hero 12.You must already have, or you must then acquire the Quik app and create a GoPro User Account. The Quik app instructs the user to swipe down and left and place the Hero 12 in pairing mode. My screen would not allow any swipes, and the app could not find the Hero 12 to pair with it. Removing the battery and SD card and rebooting a few times was ineffective at resolving the issue. The solution was to manually download the update file from the GoPro website to a PC, unzip the file and copy the update folder to a freshly formatted/blank microSD card. Once the SD card with the update and the battery are reinstalled in the Hero 12, turning the camera on should immediately boot to the installation of the software update, but in my case the result was a warning that the battery must have at least 20% charge remaining to install the update. Connecting the Hero 12 to the computer to charge the battery results in the notice that USB is connected (which prevents wireless pairing). My Hero 12 arrived with both batteries at 19%, and the batteries with the dual charger accessory that I purchased separately were both at 16%.After partially charging a battery and disconnecting the USB cable, turning the Hero 12 on then successfully installed the software update and finally made the Hero 12 a usable camera. I contacted GoPro and learned that the need to perform a manual installation of the initial, out of box, software update was not uncommon.Using the Hero 12 is easy and consistently results in outstanding videos and stills. There is a choice to use “Easy” menus, which offer a basic, simple point and shoot type of operating environment, or “Pro” menus which provide complete user control with the many available settings and features.Videos recorded in each of the available modes look outstanding! The wide-angle lens selections range up to 122° horizontal (151° diagonal) field of view in 16:9, but will increase to an incredible142° horizontal (177° diagonal) super-wide field with the optional Max Lens Mod 2.0, with the associated fish-eye lens distortion effect. The wide variety of resolutions, aspect ratios, features such as time-lapse and slow-motion, horizon-lock and superb stabilization results in incredible videos. The only video quality issue that I observed, was that in low light, the Hero 12 appears to struggle, even with the f2.5 aperture.Depending on camera settings, a fully charged battery provided approximately 90 continuous minutes of 4K or 5.3K video recording on average. With certain settings, after about 45-60 minutes of recording, the Hero 12 shut down due to overheating. When overheated, the camera body temperature ranged between about 130° F and 147° F and required about 30-40 minutes of cool down. The battery exceeded 150°. As is typical of HD video cameras, the Hero 12 Black gets hot, even when the ambient environment is not.Overall, the GoPro Hero 12 is outstanding! The video and audio are incredible. Unless GPS functionality is critically important to you, you will really enjoy the Go Pro Hero 12 Black which is an exceptionally good and extremely versatile camera.
The GoPro - HERO12 Black Action Camera Bundle is a comprehensive collection for the action camera user and should be on your shortlist. The Hero12 Black camera itself represents a modest improvement from the earlier version but probably offers worthwhile evolutionary tweaks. I wasn't bowled over by any specific improvement but appreciate GoPro's continual refinements. The real "hero" in this offering is the second battery! Like it's predecessors this camera suffers from relatively brief battery life so the inclusion of the second battery can be a life saver! This is particularly relevant since charging the batteries is an in-camera arrangement and takes about 90 minutes per battery! (You can purchase an external charger if this gets to be too annoying!)Like its ... This is particularly relevant since charging the batteries is an in-camera arrangement and takes about 90 minutes per battery! (You can purchase an external charger if this gets to be too annoying!)Like its older siblings this camera runs hot if you are shooting extended hi-res videos. Like all lithium batteries the life is also affected by cold weather. If you can you should tuck the camera into an interior pocket when you are not using it.Another annoying issue is related to the Quik app. This has happened to me before on initial setup and firmware upgrades. The connectivity is very spotty and it may require multiple attempts to get the process to complete. Once completed things seem to be relatively stable. The positive features of the bundle are many. The camera itself shoots excellent quality video and there is a rich set of advanced features that allow you to control framing, exposure, resolution, stabilization and much more. Mercifully the default operation is run under an "Easy" button that sets all of these to reasonable values to get you running out of the box.Once setup, the app is pretty intuitive and comprehensive and you can do virtually anything from the app that you can do on the camera itself. This is a blessing since I find the phone to be easier to navigate than the tiny screen on the back of the camera. One last thing - the good folks at GoPro have decided to put a number of features behind a subscription paywall. Their marketing folks are quite aggressive and you will get hounded to buy the offerings. In conclusion - this camera takes stellar video and is light and rugged. And now that it is bundled with an extra battery and some useful mounts it definitely deserves your consideration.
