All round durable high performance

This is my third pair of Hoka Challenger ATR GTX running shoes. In my opinion they are a well made shoe that is durable and performs well. I would recommend sizing up a half size. I am normally a 9.5 and wear a 10 in this shoe. The soles provide solid traction and support. On one pair the waterproofing started to fade at 10 months, but by then I needed a new pair due to the number of miles I put on the shoes (750). I find them to be incredibly comfortable. The toe box provides ample room horizontally and the arch support has eliminated any plantar fasciitis concerns. Can't say enough good things about this product. The tread works well in the gym, on the road and on the trail. The Jeep of running shoes.

Best running shoes I’ve bought in years.

I have logged over 45,000 miles and worn out many pairs of shoes over the last 40 plus years. I’ve been frustrated for years over the changes to shoes. These Hoka Challenger ATR shoes are great. They have the support I need and the materials in the uppers are excellent. The fabric is not the typical “cheese cloth” that so many shoes use. I can pull my laces a little bit tighter when I put them on and the stretch in the fabric allows them to stay tight so I don’t have to keep retying them during my run. Great shoe! Please don’t change a thing. I’ll be back for another pair when these get 500 miles on them.

I've bought 3 pairs of these in a row, and they are the best trainers I've ever worn. I wear them 6 days a week as I jog, walk fast around my delivery (I'm a postie) they are superior to anything I've ever put on my feet in my life. Though obviously I don't wear them much from December to March. I took a chance on buying Hoka and glad I did, especially as their wide fit is perfect. Also thanks must be given to their colour schemes, they are absolutely spot on and great to look at, without looking ridiculous OTT. The blue with sunburst orange soles are fantastic. I'll probably get another pair of them soon.

Defective Heel Counter
20 February 2023

I've ran in every iteration of Challengers since ATR 2 (some interactions multiple times) and have had minimal issues. I can usually get 400mi of dedicated trail running before the sides start blowing. This recent pair's padded heel counter on the left shoe fell in on my second run which now causes some irritation. Tried my best to pull it back into shape with minimal luck. Each time I slide my foot into the shoe it falls back in! Chalking the issue as a one off defect. Will continue to purchase in the future.

Gore-Tex makes these really special
9 January 2024

Love Hokas! As for this particular shoe, the Gore-Tex makes it really special. Now I can walk out in the rain or through puddles and my feet won't get wet! The sole on these shoes aren't rock hard like other trail runners can be. It's also not super soft like some of Hoka's road running shoes. I like the happy medium! Wish they offered more colors though. Looking forward to buying more trail running Hokas in the future!

Great shoe, great price

I bought these because I was looking for a moderately priced, semi cushioned shoe that would be good for everyday light jogging. So far they are very comfortable and don't disappoint, much like the last couple pair of Hokas I have owned. The only complaint I have on the comfort/fit is that the curved part of the back of the shoe that goes under my ankle rubs a little bit. It doesn't cause any issues and certainly isn't a deal breaker, but I notice it. This has been the case on several previous shoes, so it's more the anatomy of my ankle, and not the shoe design. The rubbing tends to go away as the shoe gets more broken it. I don't run a lot, just occasionally for general fitness, but Hokas have helped keep my leg joints from hurting as much after running. I can't say the same for several other brands of running shoes I have tried. Also, since I bought these shoes as last years model, they were on sale. The sale price on Fleet Feet was the same as on Hoka's website, but Fleet Feet didn't charge me any shipping. So it was cheaper to buy them from Fleet Feet than straight from Hoka. BONUS!

I think I'll stay away from online ordering

This is my second pair of Challengers, as I loved my first ones so much! I bought them for tread milling and walking. Down 90lbs at this point after two back surgeries August and October of 2020.The first pair were like walking on clouds and so comfortable. Perfect fit! This new pair, same exact shoe, feels like it has been baked in an over for a year at low temp. The shoe is so stiff and the material is so dry and inflexible. Uncomfortable to say the least. I've got roughly 20 miles on them almost and there are no signs of softening up.I originally ordered two pair this time because how much I loved my first Challengers, though the second pair was a different model and slipped off my heel constantly, which I returned with no problem.Customer service is great, ... MoreThis is my second pair of Challengers, as I loved my first ones so much! Light. Comfy. Color, meh!

Got these for outdoor walking, light hiking. Only ordered due to sale since full price is just too hard to justify for a non-daily/non-workout shoe. Initial D width which is normally my standard just didn't fit comfortably, too tight across forefoot which surprised me since they are supposed to have ample toe boxes. I got Topo for workouts in standard D width and they fit toes great. So hoka toebox isn't really much more ample than most other athletic shoes I've worn. To get the wide in my size, I had to compromise on my color preferences. I don't mind the olive green uppers but the orange is just garish. I prefer subtle colors and basic combos of colors. But for the discount, I'll be ok with the orange. It's really fit and comfort that matter most to me. My wife ... MoreGot these for outdoor walking, light hiking. She loved them and knowing I have big toe arthritis and low back disc issues, she figured I'd benefit by the Hoka. Time will tell. First couple times wearing them have been good. For SoFlo, probably won't wear too often, but moving to NC, I'll get much more routine use. If they prove to be good I'll consider a pair for workouts

Perfect Sizing, Stability, And Build, Make This A Winner

The key to any shoe that I wear is sizing. I've got one foot smaller than the other, and the other a full size wider. This often makes me unable to match shoes properly to my feet leaving the shoes prone to wearing out too fast, or me feeling like I am walking around on a boat, constantly rocking around inside the shoes. Top it all off with flat feet, and being born with hammer toes, shoe purchasing is always a nightmare for me.I decided this time instead of going for that ideal "looking" pair, that I would just concentrate exclusively on the size. So far, that's the ticket. To me, these aren't the most stylish shoes that I wanted to purchase but, boy do they fit well and seem very well constructed. But, I decided to give Hoka another try and I am absolutely glad I did.Delivery itself was even faster than I expected. Overall, I have no complaints about the shoes or Hoka and will definitely be pur hasing from them in the future.

what are they doing?

The Challenger used to be essentially a Clifton with trail tread. That was perfection. There's a reason that Clifton is Hoka's flagship shoe - stellar arch support, and the perfect balance of cushion, responsiveness, and meta-rocker geometry. The only downside of the Clifton is that it isn't great for running on trails. The old Challengers used to be the (rather obvious) solution to this problem. If you look at photos of the Challenger ATR 3 or 4, you can see that they used to look like Cliftons, with a nice supported arch. If you look at photos of the 5 and now 6, you can see that the shoe has been devolving into... I don't know what, exactly. Just a generic shoe that doesn't really have anything going for it. Seriously, I can't think of an application for this shoe that another shoe wouldn't be better suited for. The "road to trail" marketing has basically become a gimmick. I'd rather just run in my Cliftons on the trails.Hoka, if you are really committed to producing this weird, purposeless shoe, then at least consider releasing a "Clifton Trail" or something like that - for those of us who actually would like a daily cushioned trail runner!
