I've ran in every iteration of Challengers since ATR 2 (some interactions multiple times) and have had minimal issues. I can usually get 400mi of dedicated trail running before the sides start blowing. This recent pair's padded heel counter on the left shoe fell in on my second run which now causes some irritation. Tried my best to pull it back into shape with minimal luck. Each time I slide my foot into the shoe it falls back in! Chalking the issue as a one off defect. Will continue to purchase in the future.

Less heelstrike cushion than I expected. Nothing miraculous. Not sure it will minimize my knee inflammation. Honestly my new Asics have more "spring" than these. Forefoot is roomier than Asics- good for my toe issues. Forefoot material is flexible- hope it lasts. Looks not so durable. Heel is snug-good. Sizing length is identical to my Asics- (although I think Asics "lasts" are smaller than 10 yrs ago. ) The goofy Hoka colors are annoying to me.

I have reviewed 18 pages of the 'heel to toe drop concept' trying to get a better understanding of how the shoes are developed for different types of runners, etc. What may have worked for me in the past, will not work for me in the present. I was a runner for 44 years. Now I am a walker, doing 4 to 6 miles daily, on flat and hills, on gravel dirt roads, some paved roads and some gravel chipped roads. I am in my late 60s. I am part Native American and part Romanian Gypsy with a wider metatarsal area and a narrower heel. As I have aged, yet still being quite active, I have developed 3 curvatures of the spine, with a debilitating osteoarthritis condition. I say all of this, because I have learned an 8MM to 10MM with maximum cushioning may be the better shoe fit for ... MoreI have reviewed 18 pages of the 'heel to toe drop concept' trying to get a better understanding of how the shoes are developed for different types of runners, etc. What may have worked for me in the past, will not work for me in the present. The Hoka shoe is a 5MM heel to toe drop, that caused severe pain in the calves and in the outer IT band next to the knees. It had become a trail and error in trying out shoes inside the house, until after being worn for a few hours, to determine if it is worth trying outside. The Hoka shoe is not a good fit for me, but is may be a good fit for other runners.

Absolutely love these shoes for running trails. I blew out my last pair on the front sides of my feet. Thought it was because I needed a wide but these new shoes in wide feel pretty much the same. I love these shoes, they are super comfortable and plush, pure joy to run in. My only complaint is that Hoka can't make just a simple black or grey shoe that will go with anything. Instead they look like a 3rd grader picked the color schemes. And if you need a wide you get even fewer options. Great shoes, just poor choice of colors.
I'm a trail runner, hiker, and avid outdoorsman. I wanted a good trail runner shoe for light to mild hikes and runs. The support on these is amazing, but the size feels too narrow. I went with the recommended size according to Roadrunner's foot assessment plus two sizes and it still has friction points that have led to blisters, even with low friction socks designed to prevent this. The wear is evident as the inside mesh of the shoe is worn out, as is the top of the custom insole I bought. My New Balance trail runners would last two years at almost half the cost. These are not high mileage either, in less a year I've maybe gone 50 miles, if that. They also SMELL horrifically. I clean my feet, but of course I also sweat. This is my second pair of Challengers, as I loved my first ones so much! I bought them for tread milling and walking. Down 90lbs at this point after two back surgeries August and October of 2020.The first pair were like walking on clouds and so comfortable. Perfect fit! This new pair, same exact shoe, feels like it has been baked in an over for a year at low temp. The shoe is so stiff and the material is so dry and inflexible. Uncomfortable to say the least. I've got roughly 20 miles on them almost and there are no signs of softening up.I originally ordered two pair this time because how much I loved my first Challengers, though the second pair was a different model and slipped off my heel constantly, which I returned with no problem.Customer service is great, ... MoreThis is my second pair of Challengers, as I loved my first ones so much! Got these for outdoor walking, light hiking. Only ordered due to sale since full price is just too hard to justify for a non-daily/non-workout shoe. Initial D width which is normally my standard just didn't fit comfortably, too tight across forefoot which surprised me since they are supposed to have ample toe boxes. I got Topo for workouts in standard D width and they fit toes great. So hoka toebox isn't really much more ample than most other athletic shoes I've worn. To get the wide in my size, I had to compromise on my color preferences. I don't mind the olive green uppers but the orange is just garish. I prefer subtle colors and basic combos of colors. But for the discount, I'll be ok with the orange. It's really fit and comfort that matter most to me. My wife ... MoreGot these for outdoor walking, light hiking. She loved them and knowing I have big toe arthritis and low back disc issues, she figured I'd benefit by the Hoka. Time will tell. First couple times wearing them have been good. For SoFlo, probably won't wear too often, but moving to NC, I'll get much more routine use. If they prove to be good I'll consider a pair for workouts
The key to any shoe that I wear is sizing. I've got one foot smaller than the other, and the other a full size wider. This often makes me unable to match shoes properly to my feet leaving the shoes prone to wearing out too fast, or me feeling like I am walking around on a boat, constantly rocking around inside the shoes. Top it all off with flat feet, and being born with hammer toes, shoe purchasing is always a nightmare for me.I decided this time instead of going for that ideal "looking" pair, that I would just concentrate exclusively on the size. So far, that's the ticket. To me, these aren't the most stylish shoes that I wanted to purchase but, boy do they fit well and seem very well constructed. The prior Hoka pair I purchased just weren't the right size and the toe on one side split in no time. For an expensive shoe like that, I was disappointed. But, I decided to give Hoka another try and I am absolutely glad I did.Delivery itself was even faster than I expected. Overall, I have no complaints about the shoes or Hoka and will definitely be pur hasing from them in the future.
Primary use is day hikes in mountains and local walking paths. Very comfortable and provide good support. Haven't used them extensively on trails but traction seems to be good. Need more time on trail to get a better opinion. I purchased the Wide (2E) version which fits perfectly. I wanted the waterproof GTX version but unfortunately HOKA only makes the GTX in 'D' width. Those were painful within a few minutes of having them on so I settled for these. I wish HOKA would make the GTX versions of their shoes available in wide widths....
This was my first pair of Hoka’s and unfortunately they weren’t for me. Im an experienced runner, and have tried many brands with no issues. However these have an awkward sole and feel even when just standing. Toe box is really roomy as well, not too big, just roomier than usual. Anyway, I got this to use solely for trails and I did try them on the pavement as well and both resulted in serious pains in my upper calves. I thought maybe it was something that would adjust but it has never went away. I’ve never had this problem and I was running regularly before getting these shoes and don’t have the pain in my other running shoes. The way the shoe makes you land puts your body’s weight in weird spot on your stride.
