Every great watercolor has its particular personality, and in our view, Holbein's best features are its unparalleled high-chroma colors and its transparency. One glance at Holbein's color chart reveals that these colors are all about intensity and light, with numerous botanical pinks, stormy deep blues, and fewer neutrals than you'd expect. Because the pigments are so intense and finely milled, Holbein outperforms other watercolor in thin, transparent applications. Every Holbein watercolor dilutes smoothly to create a wide range of values, from ultra-dark to subtle and light. Its bright pigments and advanced formula allow you to color more water, more evenly, with a very small amount of paint. In general, Holbein colors are less granulating and more uniform in texture and flow than the classic European watercolors on which they were based in Holbein's early days. They are also generally brighter. Even in Holbein's range of earth pigments, you'll find surprisingly bright colors, particularly in the intense gold and red undertones. 15 mL tube. Made in Japan. I replenished 5 different tubes of Holbein watercolor pigment, and took a chance on one new one - Naples Yellow. The 4 replenished colors were the same solid performing pigments I've used in the past. Naples Yellow is disappointing. It is much closer to a cad yellow than the flesh tone I would relate Naples Yellow to. Artists must try new manufacturers, and I won't avoid Holbein products because they are proven to me, however I'm going back to Blicks Naples Yellow.

I started watercoloring about 7 years ago. I have tried different brands of paints, and Holbein is definitely the best for me. I use my watercolours almost daily for practicing new techniques and perfect the known.Holbein have a wide range of colours, and some which are unique. It is a pleasure to use the Holbein products. One thing, that is not so great, is that it is not available in Montreal any more, looks like Daniel Smith has a great marketing machine, that has made it the most available brand in Omer deSerre. Our most popular art store.

Just recently started trying Holbein watercolors after experiencing them in a workshop where the paints were provided. Bought a lot of different blues, and a lemon yellow. Colors are intense. Lemon yellow is the most transparent of any brand I've tried. When the Holbein paints have dried on the palette, they don't crack. A little water on the dried well of paint returns it to its former fluid state almost immediately, with no loss of integrity or intensity. Very impressed with these paints.

All of my paints are either Holbein or Daniel Smith. It dries in pans very nicely, making traveling with them very easy. The colors are vibrant and mix well across brands. If you are keen on single pigments, however, this brand will not make things easy for you. You have to check if they are a blend. That being said, even the multi-pigmented paints mix really well with other colors and you don't have to worry about muddy mixes.
I have just been testing the new paints but so far I love the colors and transparency. The burnt sienna and hookers green are more transparent than other brands I have tried. The compose blue is only available from Holbein. So far I like it better than cerulean blue although they are not the same color. Mineral violet was my other choice and it is a new color for me and I like it. The bonus brush is excellent and I appreciate it.
Holbein paints remain the gold standard of watercolor paint. I bought these paints on a recommendation by a well known and respected artist who stated that this particular color cannot be beat by any other brand. Since using it, I would agree. Creamy, strong, spreadable and mixing with water creates a stable blend that is not grainy at all. When using hot-press paper the translucency is incomparable.
These watercolors are interesting because of their lack of additives: I love watercolor paints with a lot of gum Arabic, but gum Arabic is CHEAP and pigments are expensive! These paints are very color dense and I can add my own mediums. Since these seem to have a high load of finely prepared pigment, I feel like these paints are a superior value to larger, cheaper tubes from brands that include a lot of binders. These can be used as is or worked with mediums to create your preferred paint texture. For students or beginners a paint with additives may be more affordable and forgiving but for experienced or professional artists, these are excellent & a worthy addition to your palette.
I recently bought a 24 color set of Holbein watercolors plus some additional tubes. I hadn't used this product before. I'm very impressed with the intense color and the way the dried paints reactivate with only a very small amount of water. It took me a little while to adjust to painting with such intensely pigmented paints. These paints are definitely more intensely pigmented than other brands, including Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith. I love these paints and would buy them again and again.
I personally adore these watercolors. The colors are intense and vibrant. Drying them out to use as pan paints only takes a little bit of that intensity away (as turning tube paints into pan paints usually does to a slight degree), and they rewet easily without the need to scrub. Due to the fact that these paints are made without dispersing agents, they do not bloom quite as much as other artist quality paints, although they do indeed bloom to an extent. I personally do not mind this as I focus on more detail oriented pieces or in an East Asian painting style rather than free flowing, so I actually enjoy the fact that I have a bit more control of where the paint spreads. Also, ox gall mediums are fairly affordable so even if I did want serious, Winsor and Newton ... MoreI personally adore these watercolors. The colors are intense and vibrant. Of course, I believe it's important to spread out and experiment with other brands if you can, and I've found that I also enjoy using Maimeri Blu, Daniel Smith's, and Winsor and Newton Professional, but I always come back to Holbein.
Mineral Violet, Vermillion, Brillant Orange: No, not the name of a Law Firm (or its defendants)...its the colors i bought. Once again, i am a self-taught newbie which basically means i am a young retiree (USAF) with lots of time on her hands, helping my beloved mama, in need of a creative outlet for stress relief. And so, i took up watercolor (no mess, quick clean up, can be left out if i need to attend to business, and no odor). If i ever become a POW, this is what i would hide in my prison pajamas and they could leave me in solitary confinement for all i care! But i digress...love the brilliance! I emailed the company, but no reply. So i did the black line paint over it with each and shrugged my shoulders. Uh...they are pretty. And playful. And vivid. What can i say? I ain't no artist (yet!).
