Disappointing printer

Do Not Buy HP "e" printers like this

I made the mistake of buying one of these "printers". I needed a small, reliable, fast printer that I could lug around for business meetings on the go.What I got with the HP M209dwe was a non-functioning brick that tried to force me to purchase a subscription from HP in order for it to actually function. After hours of trying to configure the printer to just . . . print, the only thing it produced were status sheets showing how it wouldn't work without HP's mobile app (spyware), a constant wifi connection to the Internet, and a subscription fee ($$$).Thankfully, the local OfficeMax did the right thing and gave me a full refund.

Hopelessly convoluted setup
28 November 2022

After purchase, stepped through the setup, which had many, many steps. But it worked. Printed a 20 page report, double sides, 2 pages per sheet.Worked like a charm. Two weeks later, tried to print report again, and received a message 'setup not complete'. Spent 2 hours trying to resolve this, and had no end of grief.Printer is going back tomorrow. The printer requires you to set up an account with HP, with personal details, which completely overcomplicates the setup. While I had reservations about it forcing me to provide personal information, I reluctantly complied.

It will not work without HP+ account
25 January 2023

This printer is the biggest disappointment I have had in a long time. The HP support said you did not need to create an HP+ account or be connected to the internet to use it. I set it up following the instructions of just not creating the HP+ account and it seemed to work fine for a few about a month. Now it stopped working with an error message that setup was not completed. It seems I cannot use it without setting up the HP+ account and keeping it connected to the internet. The HP Smart applet (see attached screenshot) says you must agree to buy only HP supplies and connect to the internet and create an HP+ account otherwise the printer will not work. Now it is too late to return it. I got a month's worth of printer - what a ripoff!!!!!

This has been a bad experience all around and I will be avoiding HP products in the future

Printed Then Stopped

I had always been satisfied with HP products. Until now. I had no idea that the HP LaserJet M209dw REQUIRED an internet connection to print. It's not an option. I did not understand that from the specs I read online. This is a very unusual requirement and should be in large print: REQUIRES AN INTERNET CONNECTION: WILL NOT CONNECT VIA USB!I thought the reviewers who were rating it low were just having trouble connecting to wifi. Since I planned on using USB, I didn't think it would be an issue. I really didn't consider that wifi was MANDATORY for printing. I've owned printers for over 30 years, and I've never heard of such a thing.I was able to get it to print a few pages after downloading some drivers. It was very fast and the pages looked good!, But then it stopped and the configuration report I was finally able to extract using the on-printer buttons indicated I had run out of pages to print because it was in setup mode. Also, now I know that it will print without an internet connection, but there's a limit. 20 pages. I tried to reset the printer to factory default to get 20 more pages, but no luck.If HP doesn't write a work-around program (remove the page limit) so that it operates via usb and without HP Smart or wifi or ethernet or any other internet communication, then I'll either try to return it or recycle it. It's a useless machine to me right now. So much for HP's green footprint. HP turned a fine printer into junk.

Set it up with mobile device for sanity's sake
29 July 2023

HP has been around for a good long time. I've used tons of their products mostly at work this is the first new home laser I've had in many years. Had to replace my last laser when the mice decided to get inside it and destroy things. Never bought one with this requirement to connect to the internet but for the price it was worth a try. For the sake of your own sanity don't set it up with your desktop, set it up with your cell phone or tablet. I messed with this for two days on my windows 11 pc could not get anyplace getting it setup. Either win 11 is still having issues which would not be surprising or the mobile app is just that much better. Put your cell phone on the same wifi you plan to use the printer on in your office/home. Either win 11 is still having issues which would not be surprising or the mobile app is just that much better. Put your cell phone on the same wifi you plan to use the printer on in your office/home. My first hassle I had was that the email I used for my old hp account is no longer available to me and the pc setup did not have an option for no longer accessible email address. Not sure exactly why but when I setup on my cell phone I got past this problem, shouldn't complain I guess I thought for sure I was going to have to find a human to get this going. After I was finally able to get through setup using my android device then it finally became online via the pc. You have to run the hp app on each device you wish to print from. The fastest way to get the printer into setup mode is to unplug it for a few minutes then plug it back in. You may need to press the infinitesimally tiny button on top of the wifi light to get it to connect to wifi. My computer has built in wifi but it is connected by cable to my router, you may or may not have to disable your onboard wifi chip when setting up this printer. When printing from your desktop pc you will likely need to select hp smart as the printer and not the printer itself. The instructions they have in the box are next to worthless. Print quality is decent, I really don't print but I do it enough that I need a printer in the house. You get six months of free toner service after that you're given a choice of how much you print which determines the price, toner is expensive I don't think 1.99 a month is excessive when they'll auto ship a fresh cartridge when you get low and setup recycling as well apparently. I really hated to take two stars off them for the setup hassles but it was quite annoying and the next to zero documentation in their book just made it more annoying.

The printer is so fast!
4 April 2023

I bought this printer a couple of weeks ago and it is so fast. It’s also very simple and user friendly. It reminds me of a more simplistic version of my work printers, the speed is just as fast without all the control buttons. I love that as long as I leave it on, I’ll automatically get toner cartridges sent to me whenever my printer tells the company I ran out. I also love that the toner isn’t as nearly as expensive as printer ink cartridges. I use to have a cheap cannon printer where I had to pay $100 for two ink cartridges (color and black&white). Those ink cartridges were so expensive and never lasted. The printer also took forever to load. So far I have used this printer wirelessly with my apple iPad’s air printer command. It was so easy!

Tried again yesterday, got by far the worst tech support person I have ever encountered. I could not finish a sentence without being interrupted and talked over. Also she did not know the difference between a modem and a router, although that was irrelevant as neither device was actually involved (she said the printer “had to be” connected through the modem.)If you have money to burn, buy crypto before you buy this printer.
