I have recently used the Descender Long Sleeve for an autumn bikepacking trip in the middle of Germany at the end of October/beginning of November.Only packing the kit really necessary is key for me as the bags don't offer much storage on the bike. The Descender top is a welcome addition to my kit list now, as it is one of the most versatile layers I have used so far.It offers great comfort in the hut or tent after a tough day on the bike. At the same time it is very suited as a layer for cycling during the day as well. I used it in combination with a very lightweight and wind-blocking gilet, in dry conditions during the day and light rain at the end. With bikepacking trips access to washing facilities is limited, and long days on the bike don't offer much time to clean the garments. Even after a week I still felt comfortable using the top on my journey back on the plane, and would highly recommend it.

I'm 6'3" tall and approximately 215 lbs. The extra large fits me very well. I'm slightly out of shape but I still do some exercise and it fits me. Ideally, it would be 1" longer in the torso but the sleeves are perfect. It is somewhat of a tailored fit and actually looks quite smart. Very happy with it. It's not a very thick and fleecy item but it is a fantastic alternative to a hoody or fleece jacket (it does not have a hood).

I have a million fleeces and badelayers, but I bought this specifically in preparation for an expedition cruise to Antarctica. Icebreaker is a great brand and merino wool is the best for both performance and odor control, which will be important when I’m on a boat for 10 days with regular cold-weather excursions and probably not much chance to do laundry. The Descender zip is relatively thin as far as midlayers go, but the groove patterns in the material mean it does an excellent job wicking sweat, while also providing some insulation. To test it out, I’ve gone running with the Descender over a thin synthetic baselayer with a light wind shell over the top, and it performed beautifully. I even used it two days in a row like that without washing it, and there was no ... MoreI have a million fleeces and badelayers, but I bought this specifically in preparation for an expedition cruise to Antarctica. I even used it two days in a row like that without washing it, and there was no odor. That’s where merino wool really does its job vs. synthetic materials. And I could wear this next-to-skin, of course, too. It is snug enough, it wicks sweat, and it’s not itchy at all.I’m 6-3 and 200 lbs with an athletic build, and I have this in both a L and XL. Both feel fine, though the XL is probably a tad more comfortable. I usually wear a L in most things but Icebreaker’s website actually recommended an XL for me in this, and they were probably correct. But I figure I’ll keep both and use the L more as a baselayer and maybe the XL (not at the same time) as a midlayer—whether it’s in Antarctica, skiing, or whatever. The great thing is that these are high-quality garments that’ll last for years and years and never develop a gross odor, so they’re worth the investment. And like I said, I think the world of Icebreaker the brand, both for their quality and their service. Just fantastic. Finally, it’s handy that it has a few pockets, especially if you’re going for a run and need to bring your phone, a house/car key or whatever. Because it’s a fairly thin garment, you’re probably not going to want to jam too much stuff in there, and the breast pocket is pretty small. But still nice to have.Overall, great product, and I’m excited to put it to the test in some extreme cold weather as a lower level layer!

I bought this looking for a nice mid layer/standalone jacket for cooler temps. It's super comfortable and the weight is great. I was surprised however at the fit. As it is marketed as a "jacket" so I assumed it would have a more casual or loose fit. I found that this jacket is very snug fitting, more like a long underwear top than a jacket. I usually wear a large in all my other purchases and they have fit fine. At 6' tall and 190 pounds I know I'm not an athletic build, but... It this had fit a little better it would have been 5 stars.
I finally got myself a mid layer and the quality is great, in really happy about this item. I even used it under a simple rain jacket this winter when it was cold and it kept metoasty going to work.Fit wise (small size) :+ The body runs slim so for me that's a plus.+ Nice body and sleeve length.- The sleeves are wide though, so if you're slim with big biceps your good to go, but if you're arms are toothpicks like mine it'll be floaty. Not a bad aspect in itself, but I'd have liked a more fitted fit on the arms as well.- The thumbs holes seem like they could have been better designed, it feels a bit awkward and there's a lot of excess material reaching your knuckle and it would have been better if it was a stretchy next-to-skin fit.Quality wise:+ The fabric ... MoreI finally got myself a mid layer and the quality is great, in really happy about this item. It's not the lighter dark blue with full red zippers as seen in the lower thumbnails.I rated -15 to -25 as of now (winter is running late this year) but I'm sure I'll remain warm with -25 and lower considering its merino and having a base layer and my snowboard jacket on.
Love this jacket! The color, material, warmth, breathability, and fit are great. Couldn't recommend more. There are only two annoying details I wish Icebreaker would improve on. First, there is no hanging loop. This is incredibly annoying, every jacket should have this. Second, I wish this had a dual zipper like the similar quantum III hoodie has. Having two zippers is a lot more flexible when doing anything active.
- Very long arms (this is something I have noticed earlier with Icebreaker-products. Dont know why, its always like a couple centimeters too long. Its like Icebreaker cater to very tall people gorilla arms.- Chest pocket not really compatible with modern day smart phones. You can squeeze it in but too much hassle.- Material is also thinner than i anticipated.
I have been wearing various Icebreaker merino products for years and swear by them, but this was my first Icebreaker Descender jacket. I love it! It is the perfect all-mountain mid-layer. For back-country skiing it layered perfectly over my Icebreaker 260 baselayer leaving enough room to comfortably fit an extra down insulating layer under my shell when needed. The thumb loops were very comfortable and the arm length was generous. I can't wait to take it hiking this summer.
I have bought two identical blue long-sleeve full length jackets from Icebreaker before - Icebreaker Men's Compass Long Sleeve Zip Jacket. The first one in February 2017 and the second one in March 2018. I have worn them all the time since then and both still look almost like new. I decided to buy the same again in a different colour but they aren't now made. I looked for a similar one and found the Realfleece Defender. It is even better than the Compass. I always like a full length zip jacket, and the two side pockets with zips are perfect. Inside the Defender, just like the Compass, there are two cavernous pockets which would hold a newspaper. A small zipped pocket is on the front of the Defender and takes my iPhone. I highly recommend this garment
Amazing jacket. quickly jumped to one of the top of the list for my go to layers. Only tried it down to high 30s-low 40s F so far as it's already started warming up this winter after I got it as a present, and it's done great keeping me warm to those temps. Also comfortable wearing it in the 60s F. super comfy, packs tiny, durable, great thermoregulation. It's slim athletic fit is great and I've found it to be better fitting than my Arctery'x, Patagonia, Smartwool, and other favorite layers I've had over the years. The serene blue is a beautiful shade with black accent trim. The fit and color makes it appropriate for a wide variety of activities from exploring town, nice dinners, hiking, running, or other adventuring activities which is great because I wanted it to ... MoreAmazing jacket. quickly jumped to one of the top of the list for my go to layers. Thumbholes are a plus. I do feel that a hanging loop would be a nice addition. Also, arguably one of the more important factors, my wife loves how it looks on me. Would definitely recommend
