This film is clean, a different kind of grain from HP5 and Kodak Tri-X, which are my other 2 go to films. Definitely part of my portrait arsenal on my Mamiya RZ67. I've been able to push it to 1600 and loved the results I've gotten. For my taste, I think I like this film overexposed by 1 stop.

I chose Delta 400 for its fine grain and contrast to test the close-up focussing of a Rick Olsen (USA) micro-prism viewing screen in my Hasselblad 503CW+80mm lens, using it at the minimum focussing distance of 0.93m. The photo subjects were chosen for the test rather than their aesthetics!From the film point of view the results didn't disappoint with really good detail, grain and contrast, and showed the viewing screen to be working perfectly.I shall use this again for a broader subject range in street and architecture, and it's a safe option for beginners, or those wishing to change from the subject matter that they usually photograph.

It's a long time since I used Delta 400 so when I saw some images from the recent AW B&W competition I decided to give it a go. I'm starting what I hope will be a year long project using my Holga so decided to load a roll and take it on a walk around the Rickmansworth Aquadrome. It was a beautiful crisp winter day and the combination of light & water was irresistible. I home developed the roll at box speed in Kodak HC-110 and am really pleased with the results. This film will definitely be in my arsenal for this project.

Contrast, or lack thereof, has always been a trait of Ilford's Delta film in my opinion. No matter what I'm shooting, whether it be Delta 100 or 400, shooting them at box speed has never given me a look that I was pleased with. So I switched to Kodak T-Max for a while. Then Kodak hiked their prices to clownish levels so I'm back to shooting Ilford for economic reasons. I started experimenting with pushing film to gain some of that contrast it lacked and discovered that pushing one stop gave me negligible results but pushing two stops finally gave me the contrast I was after. Developing in T-Max Dev 1:4 for 10.5 minutes, the blacks are black, the whites are white, and grain was a little more pronounced but still tasteful and not distracting. They dried mostly flat so ... So I placed Delta back in my repertoire of film stocks and is likely going be my new go-to for a while until Kodak decides to lower their prices, which seems unlikely at this point. Anyway, all my provided images are shot with a red contrast filter with the exception of the waterfall. That photo was taken with no filter and shot at box speed. They are developed in Kodak T-Max Dev 1:4 at 68 degrees for 6:30.
I picked up a roll of this to have a little taste test between this an HP5. I wanted to change to B&W for the winter and but also wanted to try out some new emulsions.I shot this at box speed and developed in Cinestill's DF96. The images came out sharp and with just the right amount of contrast. The highlights also have a slight, what I'd describe as, glow.I'd definitely use this for a wide range of applications and this is now my choice of B&W for the next coming months.My image has a little dehazing in LR. Other than that, it is as it came from the scanner (Epson V600).
For me, Delta 400 is the perfect b&w film. The exposure latitude given by the 400 ISO gives me so much range and is great for the type of photography I like to do. The grain is fine and keeps the detail crisp. I love shooting this film.
Having rebuilt my 50+ years old Yashica TLR, I opted for a different film (not HP5,FP4 or TriX which I used 40 years ago!) and went for Delta. I was very impressed with the grain quality and overall contrast. This will definitely be my film of choice going forward.
I mostly use HP5, and this is my first time using this film. I must say, I think I prefer it to HP5. It seems to have a wider tonal range and a smoother transition between tones. In my view it creates images which may not be attention-grabbing, but which are quietly intriguing,and repay closer inspection. It just seems to capture more of the world than other films, but in an unassuming way.
Delta 400 is a lovely film, but does demand a bit more care during exposure. When it works though it works sooo well and I like that it can be a little cleaner than, say, HP5. I have used it largely for landscapes but also a few portraits. In particular I find wood looks amazing on Delta 400, optionally coupled with a yellow filter.The trade-off is that it does seem like I can get crunched shadows at least with XTOL Replenishment over HP5, though it does seem a bit more open than T-Max 400 (TMY) which I tend to get overly contrasty results with (but is even cleaner). Delta 400, for me, seems to sit sort of in between HP5 and TMY.My BIG gripe is that it is not available in sheets. I prefer films that I can shoot from 35mm up to large format.
I've been a long time user of HP5+. I assumed Delta would be less flexible but from my experience Delta has great flexibility. I've been able to push Delta 400 2-3 stops and still get great results, detail in shadow, and sharp images. The more natural contrast that Delta brings than HP5+ is nice and can bring some immediate depth that you'll need to add to HP5+ in post.A great film.
