These are shockingly good. The sound they put out is absolutely crystal clear the bass is nice and deep. I originally bought them for music production in my room, but have also ended up using them for watching movies. I was planning on buying a sound bar for movies but now I don't need to with these incredible bookshelf speakers. These are a must have in my opinion for anybody dabbling in creating their own music. Not only could they be considered a great introduction pair of bookshelf speakers at a very cheap price, but my plans to buy an even more expensive pair are now on hold since these are just as good as the more expensive speakers. My room is only 15' x 20' and these speakers completely fill it with beautiful sound. My other favorite part is you can have multiple inputs playing through them at the same time. They have a really unique shape compared to other boring ol' square speakers and have nice rubberized bases to keep them stable on whatever surface they reside on. Lastly, you can use your own speaker wire (not that you will need it as they give you some with the pair) to add as much distance as you want between them so you are in no way limited by permanent wires. I highly suggest you stop searching around for any other more expensive, not as high quality pair as these two little towers if joy.

I have tried a few other powered speakers at this price and lower but was not happy. They tended to have boomy one-note bass due to tuning the vent for max bass, and not being all that clear or tonally ballanced. These speakers have surprising bass depth for their small size, a very natural tonal balance and great clarity. These have the DNA of the JBL 305 monitors at half the price! Be prepared; if there is ANY distortion on the recording, you will hear it! They will go to sleep after 20 minutes without sound, but they come back up after a second or two of audio on the line. That does not bother me at all. I used direct wire, not Bluetooth, so I can't comment on that. Good build quality and heft, looks great, and classic JBL sound. Absolutely NO complaints. You’ll receive a pair of flat-bottomed capsule speakers, a master monitor (default right channel) and extension (default left channel). Thick rubber pads on the bases of the speakers keep them from sliding around and isolate them from your work surface. You’ll connect the master monitor to the extension using the included 6 foot black and red speaker wires, which can be cut to length. Volume and input controls are located on the front of the master monitor as well as 3.5mm headphone output jack and Aux-in port, while the power switch is on its back. Note that the speakers are automatically muted when headphones are plugged in. Select an input by pressing the toggle button to switch to an individual source or choose “all” which allows you to monitor all inputs simultaneously for mix monitoring. The master houses a 60-Watt amplifier that delivers 30 Watts to each speaker, allowing you to get a lot of volume out of these relatively small speakers. The sound is very clean with crisp detail and a buttery, full midrange. While the balance is neutral and flat, I found that there was excess sibilance in the upper registers, resulting in sizzly cymbals and shushy, lisp-y sounding S’s in both spoken and sung voices. There was also a general lack of punch in the bass despite having a low-frequency port on the back, 4.5-inch main driver and ¾-inch high-frequency tweeter. Bass reproduction was a bit more pronounced at higher volumes, but in general, listening to these at super loud volumes isn’t all that helpful for content creation, so if you’re mixing content where bass reproduction is critical, I highly recommend adding a subwoofer to your setup to round it out.Just be aware that if you use the supplied RCA to 3.5mm cable that this is an unbalanced cable and some interference or white noise will likely be present; I found that when using the RCA to Aux cable, at all volume levels there was audible white noise through the speakers, especially when absent a playback signal, though at lower volumes it was less perceptible. Using the TRS connections with balanced cables and an audio interface that supports balanced output may help eliminate the noise, barring any ground loop issues.Since these are designed to be desktop monitors, placement relative to the listener does have an impact on how they will ultimately sound. The ideal position is at arm’s length angled inward so the speakers are both pointed toward the listener’s ears. This will be the sweet spot where you’ll find the clearest audio and most accurate soundstage for depth and sound placement. This also means that the best sound will usually only be perceived by one person at a time. The Bluetooth 5.0 input option is an interesting feature that’s useful for reviewing your mixes post-production to hear how it’ll sound with BT compression applied. Be aware that this input option isn’t great for watching movies or video since there is a noticeable lag between audio and video streams using Bluetooth, though it’s fine for listening to music. Due to the relatively flat and neutral balance of these speakers, for media and entertainment, they won’t sparkle out-of-the-box; that can be easily remedied on a computer or audio receiver with a few quick EQ adjustments but may be a bit more challenging if you plan to use them with other consumer electronics like a gaming console or movie projector. The speakers enter a low-power standby/sleep mode after a 20-minute period of inactivity, but initiating playback or pressing the toggle button will wake it back up. This feature can also be disabled manually. As for portability, each speaker weighs around 4 lbs, so while they’re not “toss in your backpack” portable, you could still tuck them into a suitcase or pack them in the trunk on a road trip, which is what I did on a recent weeklong vacation to the shore.Overall, I found the sound from these speakers quite suitable for monitoring my recorded creative content, which consists mainly of spoken word narration and voiceover work. If working with musical content, adding a subwoofer will likely be necessary, and for casual consumptive use, they’re fine, but not fully immersive. They’re nicely designed and somewhat portable, though probably are just unnecessary travel weight if you have a decent pair of reference headphones.

Good desktop speaker, lacks bass and depth though

Overall, these are great speakers and most will probably like them. There are a couple of things that I believe hold them back acoustically, but for around $200 they’re a solid pair and most likely better than anything you’d currently be using.Let’s start with the good:The speakers look great and have a great form factor. Not unheard of, but if you were looking for true wireless you may want to look elsewhere.Once they’re set up, and they do require a power outlet for constant power draw, you’re pretty much ready to go. You have the option to switch outputs on the fly, meaning you can easily change between wireless Bluetooth from your phone or laptop, or onboard desktop pretty seamlessly. I found this feature to be nice and easy to use. Now, for the sound. If you’re familiar with JBL as a company, you may have an idea of what the sonic profile is going for; that is, a very clear, concise soundstage with little warmth and depth. The detail is great, but the low end leaves a lot to be desired. The high end features a slightly metal sound, sort of like Klipsch with its aluminum tweeter design, but again these are small drivers. These have the “Professional” monitor marketing on them, alluding that these are catered more towards folks who prefer a good, clean sound, rather than top to bottom clarity, depth, and some bass to round it out.Unfrontetely, I don’t believe that there is a way to tweak the EQ of the sound, which is a bummer to me. You can, of course, do it through your preferred player or amp, but a few onboard settings may have been nice.Overall, I think these are solid speakers and produce a good enough sound for the price to recommend them. Just know these aren’t punching too far above their weight.

Good, not great

I was excited to receive JBL’s newest desktop speakers, JBL has always been known to have good quality products, but overall the speakers are just good, not great. My first impression taking the speakers out of the box was a good one, each one with a unique shape, and a good amount of weight to them, connecting everything is very simple, and all the cables come included in the box, they even feel to be of decent quality. They are 2.0 which means they are stereo speakers, no surroundsound here. My sole purpose for these speakers was for me to connect them to my computer monitor to either have audio for surfing the web, listening to music, or watching a few movies online etc, or to have audio when playing my video game system when I don’t feel like wearing my gaming ... MoreI was excited to receive JBL’s newest desktop speakers, JBL has always been known to have good quality products, but overall the speakers are just good, not great. My first impression taking the speakers out of the box was a good one, each one with a unique shape, and a good amount of weight to them, connecting everything is very simple, and all the cables come included in the box, they even feel to be of decent quality. They are 2.0 which means they are stereo speakers, no surroundsound here. My sole purpose for these speakers was for me to connect them to my computer monitor to either have audio for surfing the web, listening to music, or watching a few movies online etc, or to have audio when playing my video game system when I don’t feel like wearing my gaming headphones. You can connect the speakers in a few different ways. First the speakers have Bluetooth functionality, meaning you can connect them to any compatible device wirelessly using Bluetooth, you can use in auxiliary cable which connects to the front, or you can you see included RCA cable, which comes included, basically what that is is a 3.5mm jack that you would connect to a monitor, laptop, or any device that has this output, and the other side of the cable is that old school white and red plug. These speakers also support TRS cables. Basically what that is is like really big 3.5mm that were once really popular a long time ago, they might still be popular in the audio industry but I don’t really see them anymore.Overall the speakers sound pretty good, not great. They can get loud but nothing earth shattering, and the bass is just ok at best. In my opinion they’re a little too big to be used on a desk, they just kind of take up a lot of room, so be mindful of that if you like space in your desk, and cannot be hung on stands or wall mounted.I did experience some hissing sounds when connecting the speakers via the auxiliary cable or via the RCA cables, but otherwise sounded just fine connecting them through Bluetooth.

Great sound for the price!
15 February 2024

I'm giving these four stars because I also own a pair of JBL 305p MkII monitors. The sound quality of these is excellent, but the MkII's is clearly better. That said, given the size of the 104s and the various methods of connectivity these monitors offer, they are well worth the price of admission. I needed a slightly smaller set of monitors for a new desk setup, and these fit the bill perfectly without sacrificing (too much) sound quality. What's missing, sound-wise, with these? The range isn't quite as robust. Basses aren't quite as deep; highs aren't quite as vibrant, but mid-range (to my ear) is excellent. If you can afford the MkIIs and have the space, go for those, but you will not be sacrificing much by going with the 104s. They are really excellent speakers ... MoreI'm giving these four stars because I also own a pair of JBL 305p MkII monitors. The sound quality of these is excellent, but the MkII's is clearly better. If you can afford the MkIIs and have the space, go for those, but you will not be sacrificing much by going with the 104s. They are really excellent speakers overall. The other reason for four stars, however, is that these speakers have a built-in feature that you apparently cannot disable, and that is that they will go into low-power mode if they don't detect a certain line voltage. I've found this feature to be *really* annoying. Sometimes, I have music on while I'm working, and I want it at a low volume. However, the speakers are not detecting enough voltage and are dropping into sleep mode. It's not a huge deal, as I can turn the volume up slightly; it's just a matter of figuring out where the magic line is when I want background music on while I'm working without blowing my ears off at the same time. In future version of these, I'd recommend that the minimum voltage is dropped (I think it's currently 3.something volts) or (even better) provide a way to enable/disable the feature.

Not nearly loud enough for my needs
16 February 2024

These monitors are not loud enough compared to other monitors with similar stats, they honestly suck at a lot of things, and I would not use them as computer speakers, they are also too bass heavy, they might be clear in singular playback and if your goal is pod casting and vocal playback, 10/10 these will get you going, for my case they don't work that well. The Bluetooth is muddy and the TRS statics when turned up high with other outputs this isn't the case so it's the unit that causes it. I am going to just spring for what I should have bought the MKIII's or some other higher end monitors. I was trying to use them for digital playback for guitar parts playing over audio coming from my pedal board, and with the mix it became hard to hear and muddy requiring EQ ... MoreThese monitors are not loud enough compared to other monitors with similar stats, they honestly suck at a lot of things, and I would not use them as computer speakers, they are also too bass heavy, they might be clear in singular playback and if your goal is pod casting and vocal playback, 10/10 these will get you going, for my case they don't work that well. I am using a mac book to a volt 276 as my setup, I have not tried these on a PC or direct out of pedal board, I might nee to try that as they do have a 1/8 audio out.

Poor manufacturing quality, common defect, meh.
19 August 2024

'ok' sound quality, fine for playing video games or something but not amazing. The real downside to them though is the manufacturing quality of the speaker wire clips that connect the left and right speakers - after a few months of having the spring pressing against wire the plastic inside them disintegrates and the spring pops out, leaving the wire loose instead of connecting. This results in random buzzing and a feedback loop amplifying it exponentially. At first I thought I just got unlucky with a bad unit but the replacement JB gave me has now done the same thing in less than a year later! The speakers are sitting on my computer desk, in a room that is locked and inaccessible by the kids. There's been no strain on the speaker wire or anything else that could result in this damage. It's entirely spontaneous through the normal course of use.I'm not bothering with replacing them again. Decided to buy some Edifier S1000MKII that I found ex-demo for a great price. After listening to *those* for a day I can now tell just how inferior the JBLs are.You can do much better for this price, and I don't just mean the S1000MKII. Don't bother with JBL.

Pretty Good, but not great
2 September 2022

I was very impressed when I opened the box as they were larger than anticipated and heavier than anticipated. I expected bigger sound than what comes out of them, particularly bass which is a bit boomy and not tight like you would expect from a sub-woofer. Mid-rand and highs are just OK, but not great.I love the connection options and am currently using the Bluetooth option. This is selectable on the front of the right speaker along with a knob to change volume. They have an appropriately powered built-in amp that drives both speakers nicely. The two speakers are connected with a speaker cable. The instruction sheet is minimal, but there is not much to this if you have any sense at all - just connect the two speakers together with the speaker cable, plug in the ... MoreI was very impressed when I opened the box as they were larger than anticipated and heavier than anticipated. Other say it lags, but I have not experienced that effect and it works fine for me. I suppose that my expectations for sound were too high since it is just a two-speaker set and does not include a separate sub-woofer, but the weight and size led me to expect something more that it delivers. They are a pretty good set of computer speakers, but I certainly would not put them in the category of reference speakers. If you are using them for everyday use as computer speakers and not listening to music critically, they will fit the bill for you but temper your expectations. They go into sleep mode when I take a break or turn off the computer at night and automatically wake up when resuming use or restarting the computer each morning. Set them once and forget them - a good, but not great set of computer speakers.

Versatile Quality Desktop Sound
5 September 2022

When I first ordered these I didn’t realize how big they would be, they are on the larger size at about 10 inches in height. What also comes with the size is heft, the JBL 104 BT Studio Monitor Speakers feel and look like a quality set of speakers. In the box you have the speakers (one Master Speaker and one Extensionspeaker), a power cord, a length of speaker wire to wire the extension to the master and a 3.5mm to RCA cord for connection to a PC and the master speaker. There are also 1/4 in TRS Inputs on the master speaker for connection of a monitor station etc.Another feature that adds to the versatility of the JBL 104 BT Studio Monitor Speakers is the fact that they have Bluetooth connectivity.I plugged the Master in, I ran my PC 3.5mm to RCA to the Master ... MoreWhen I first ordered these I didn’t realize how big they would be, they are on the larger size at about 10 inches in height. I needed to use my own wire as the wire provided was only about 6.5 feet and I needed 8 feet. The sound produced with the JBL 104 BT Studio Monitor Speakers coaxial drivers using my PC as the source with games, videos and movies was fantastic! Bass was rich (sometimes on the boomy side) and the overall sound was just pleasing to the ears.I paired the JBL 104 BT Studio Monitor Speakers with my iPhone 13 Pro Max and they played music via bluetooth effortlessly and sounded great.A cool feature making these some of the most versatile speakers I have seen is the fact that you can have up to 3 hard wired sources and bluetooth so all four sources can be listened to (one at a time) with no switching required.Versatility, quality, and great sound all in one package, I definitely recommend the JBL 104 BT Studio Monitor Speakers.
