The JBL 104-BT is a set of compact desktop monitor pair with excellent sound and lots of flexibility. Whether you can use them as a reference monitor to edit your sound creations depends on what you’re really looking for. The ovoid-shaped 104-BT speakers look great on a desk, with a unique profile and minimal fuss on the front. They accept input from a variety of sources, including standard RCA jacks (mini-to-RCA cable included), balanced TRS, and, as the BT in the name implies, Bluetooth. The amplifier, inputs, and controls all sit in the left speaker, with the passive right speaker connected via a shielded wire pair. While the included wire connector should work for most situations, if you require more distance any wires will work. Build quality is typical JBL, ... While the included wire connector should work for most situations, if you require more distance any wires will work. Build quality is typical JBL, that is to say, very solid. When used as a desktop sound system for your PC or tablet, the 104-BT sounds great, particularly at higher volumes. Lows are clear (down to the 60Hz cutoff), mids are clean, and highs are crisp. There is no muddiness to the bass or lower-mid ranges like you find in a lot of lower-priced monitors. Overall, the sound is balanced, without the v-shape equalization present in many competitors. The 104-BT would likely be a step up from your current computer speaker setup. As a reference monitor, they are quite nice for the price. Using them this way, I connected a guitar through a mini-amp to them and was surprised at how solid the sound was. Connecting a digital synth from my computer yielded similar results. When editing more complex, multi-instrument sounds, there is a loss of clarity from these as compared to a full-sized reference monitor set or a pair of audiophile headphones. Still, compared to other monitors in this price range, they sound great, and the size makes them quite portable. Overall, the 104-BT is an excellent choice for a portable, low-cost reference monitor or simply as an upgrade to your current computer sound.

As a video content creator, I spend a lot of time with headphones on my head, but that can get tedious and tiring pretty quickly, so it’s always nice to use reference monitor speakers to help me work more efficiently and give my head and ears a break. These JBL 104-BT Desktop reference monitors are compact, versatile, and have four input options: Bluetooth, RCA, stereo ¼-inch balanced TRS, and Aux. You’ll receive a pair of flat-bottomed capsule speakers, a master monitor (default right channel) and extension (default left channel). Thick rubber pads on the bases of the speakers keep them from sliding around and isolate them from your work surface. You’ll receive a pair of flat-bottomed capsule speakers, a master monitor (default right channel) and extension (default left channel). Thick rubber pads on the bases of the speakers keep them from sliding around and isolate them from your work surface. You’ll connect the master monitor to the extension using the included 6 foot black and red speaker wires, which can be cut to length. Volume and input controls are located on the front of the master monitor as well as 3.5mm headphone output jack and Aux-in port, while the power switch is on its back. Note that the speakers are automatically muted when headphones are plugged in. Select an input by pressing the toggle button to switch to an individual source or choose “all” which allows you to monitor all inputs simultaneously for mix monitoring. The master houses a 60-Watt amplifier that delivers 30 Watts to each speaker, allowing you to get a lot of volume out of these relatively small speakers. The sound is very clean with crisp detail and a buttery, full midrange. While the balance is neutral and flat, I found that there was excess sibilance in the upper registers, resulting in sizzly cymbals and shushy, lisp-y sounding S’s in both spoken and sung voices. There was also a general lack of punch in the bass despite having a low-frequency port on the back, 4.5-inch main driver and ¾-inch high-frequency tweeter. Bass reproduction was a bit more pronounced at higher volumes, but in general, listening to these at super loud volumes isn’t all that helpful for content creation, so if you’re mixing content where bass reproduction is critical, I highly recommend adding a subwoofer to your setup to round it out. Just be aware that if you use the supplied RCA to 3.5mm cable that this is an unbalanced cable and some interference or white noise will likely be present; I found that when using the RCA to Aux cable, at all volume levels there was audible white noise through the speakers, especially when absent a playback signal, though at lower volumes it was less perceptible. Using the TRS connections with balanced cables and an audio interface that supports balanced output may help eliminate the noise, barring any ground loop issues. Since these are designed to be desktop monitors, placement relative to the listener does have an impact on how they will ultimately sound. The ideal position is at arm’s length angled inward so the speakers are both pointed toward the listener’s ears. This will be the sweet spot where you’ll find the clearest audio and most accurate soundstage for depth and sound placement. This also means that the best sound will usually only be perceived by one person at a time. The Bluetooth 5.0 input option is an interesting feature that’s useful for reviewing your mixes post-production to hear how it’ll sound with BT compression applied. Be aware that this input option isn’t great for watching movies or video since there is a noticeable lag between audio and video streams using Bluetooth, though it’s fine for listening to music. Due to the relatively flat and neutral balance of these speakers, for media and entertainment, they won’t sparkle out-of-the-box; that can be easily remedied on a computer or audio receiver with a few quick EQ adjustments but may be a bit more challenging if you plan to use them with other consumer electronics like a gaming console or movie projector. The speakers enter a low-power standby/sleep mode after a 20-minute period of inactivity, but initiating playback or pressing the toggle button will wake it back up. This feature can also be disabled manually. As for portability, each speaker weighs around 4 lbs, so while they’re not “toss in your backpack” portable, you could still tuck them into a suitcase or pack them in the trunk on a road trip, which is what I did on a recent weeklong vacation to the shore. Overall, I found the sound from these speakers quite suitable for monitoring my recorded creative content, which consists mainly of spoken word narration and voiceover work. If working with musical content, adding a subwoofer will likely be necessary, and for casual consumptive use, they’re fine, but not fully immersive. They’re nicely designed and somewhat portable, though probably are just unnecessary travel weight if you have a decent pair of reference headphones.

I've been in the market for some small but powerful desktop monitors and had an opportunity to check these out. So far I've been happy with them with some tweaks. My first use was on my desktop with my gaming laptop, which I use for both gaming and listening to music when I'm at the desk. The signal path was laptop>USB>SMSL DAC X6>Line Out>JBL speakers. The JBLs were excellent for both gaming and music with a little tweaking with an EQ (I use the Peace desktop EQ on Windows 11) to bring out the bass and drop the mids a bit. Mids are very forward, but not in a bad way. They are just not exactly neutral. Games had decent rumble and music was overall very nice to listen to. Separation was great with the speakers at arms length as suggested in the directions. I like ... Separation was great with the speakers at arms length as suggested in the directions. I like that the connection from the active speaker to the passive one uses a standard (included) 2-element speaker cable so you can customize the length and aren't constrained by a built-in cable. I have a 32:9 ultrawide monitor and its hard to find speakers that can spread out wide enough with a built-in cable. The back has a couple inputs, namely RCA stereo and dual mono 1/4 jacks. These also have decent Bluetooth connectivity. One really great feature is that you can select an individual input or all of them at the same time, including the BT sound. I've also used these to listen to the output of my Mooer desktop guitar effects processor using the 1/4 inch jacks. Because I'm able to mix that signal with the Bluetooth it makes it perfect for playing along with music from my phone. There's also a headphone jack for late nights where I want to play guitar or games and not wake up the rest of the house. Build quality is superb. They have some heft to them so any distortion is kept to a minimum. They're just the right size for desktop use and look good next to a computer monitor without taking up too much space or looking comically small. Also, thank you, JBL, for using a standard power cord rather than an outboard AC adaptor! I would highly recommend these for a small-space music production desk or even for serious gaming. My only wish would to add a sub-woofer output to give me the option to add a little more low-end.

I am honestly delighted with the audio and the build quality of these JBL Monitor Speakers. They are the perfect balance of power, clarity, and size. Though they are designed to sit at about an arms length away and pointed towards a single listener - they can easily fill a room with crisp and beautiful audio. Both Podcast and Musical recordings sound excellent - although a subwoofer will be a helpful addition for those using the speakers for media consumption. They are not the best option for portability as each speaker weighs 4lbs and because they are not particularly small. They will nearly fill a backpack all by themselves. After 20 minutes of inactivity, they enter a power saving sleep mode. At first I appreciated the feature as the power switch is out of reach ... They are not the best option for portability as each speaker weighs 4lbs and because they are not particularly small. They will nearly fill a backpack all by themselves. After 20 minutes of inactivity, they enter a power saving sleep mode. At first I appreciated the feature as the power switch is out of reach on the back of the master (right speaker), but this means that I am often required to press a button or wiggle the knob to wake them back up. I appreciate that they not only have all of the input options I could want (Bluetooth, Aux, RCA, TRS), but they allow all to be selected at the same time. Meaning that I can listen to audio from my phone as I work or play games. The feature is surprisingly handy and eliminates the need to switch inputs. Simply set it and forget it. Audio remains crisp and precise even at higher volume, and the thick rubber base ensures that there is no rattle even when the speakers sit on a hard surface. The 60 watts of power (30 in each speaker) truly shines and I am exceptionally pleased with their performance.
Overall, these are great speakers and most will probably like them. There are a couple of things that I believe hold them back acoustically, but for around $200 they’re a solid pair and most likely better than anything you’d currently be using. Let’s start with the good: The speakers look great and have a great form factor. They’re slightly unusual and modern in shape which helps with wanting to buy them and display them. Setting them up was fairly straightforward, though you may want to know that you have to connect speaker wires to both speakers to get LR channel to work properly. Setting them up was fairly straightforward, though you may want to know that you have to connect speaker wires to both speakers to get LR channel to work properly. Not unheard of, but if you were looking for true wireless you may want to look elsewhere. Once they’re set up, and they do require a power outlet for constant power draw, you’re pretty much ready to go. You have the option to switch outputs on the fly, meaning you can easily change between wireless Bluetooth from your phone or laptop, or onboard desktop pretty seamlessly. I found this feature to be nice and easy to use. Now, for the sound. If you’re familiar with JBL as a company, you may have an idea of what the sonic profile is going for; that is, a very clear, concise soundstage with little warmth and depth. The detail is great, but the low end leaves a lot to be desired. The high end features a slightly metal sound, sort of like Klipsch with its aluminum tweeter design, but again these are small drivers. These have the “Professional” monitor marketing on them, alluding that these are catered more towards folks who prefer a good, clean sound, rather than top to bottom clarity, depth, and some bass to round it out. Unfrontetely, I don’t believe that there is a way to tweak the EQ of the sound, which is a bummer to me. You can, of course, do it through your preferred player or amp, but a few onboard settings may have been nice. Overall, I think these are solid speakers and produce a good enough sound for the price to recommend them. Just know these aren’t punching too far above their weight.
I was excited to receive JBL’s newest desktop speakers, JBL has always been known to have good quality products, but overall the speakers are just good, not great. My first impression taking the speakers out of the box was a good one, each one with a unique shape, and a good amount of weight to them, connecting everything is very simple, and all the cables come included in the box, they even feel to be of decent quality. They are 2.0 which means they are stereo speakers, no surroundsound here. My sole purpose for these speakers was for me to connect them to my computer monitor to either have audio for surfing the web, listening to music, or watching a few movies online etc, or to have audio when playing my video game system when I don’t feel like wearing my gaming ... First the speakers have Bluetooth functionality, meaning you can connect them to any compatible device wirelessly using Bluetooth, you can use in auxiliary cable which connects to the front, or you can you see included RCA cable, which comes included, basically what that is is a 3.5mm jack that you would connect to a monitor, laptop, or any device that has this output, and the other side of the cable is that old school white and red plug. These speakers also support TRS cables. Basically what that is is like really big 3.5mm that were once really popular a long time ago, they might still be popular in the audio industry but I don’t really see them anymore. Overall the speakers sound pretty good, not great. They can get loud but nothing earth shattering, and the bass is just ok at best. In my opinion they’re a little too big to be used on a desk, they just kind of take up a lot of room, so be mindful of that if you like space in your desk, and cannot be hung on stands or wall mounted. I did experience some hissing sounds when connecting the speakers via the auxiliary cable or via the RCA cables, but otherwise sounded just fine connecting them through Bluetooth.
The JBL 2.0 Desktop Reference Monitor Speakers took my office/podcast studio to the next level! I have to make podcasts for work and these definitely help the process. I always like to know that my listeners are getting the best possible product. The only way to do that is to listen to the product aloud! These speakers are large. If you do not have a decent sized disk, you may not have enough room for them. They come with several wires, including a power wire, traditional speaker wires (for connecting the two speakers to each other, and an adapter that is part RCA and part stereo jack. There was no setup in terms of connecting them to my PC. Just plug and play. The bluetooth pairing process was super easy for using the speaker's built-in bluetooth option. After I ... After I got the speakers all connected, I hit the power button located on the back side of the main speaker, and they fired right up! There is a selection button that allows the user to specifically choose what input source they want (such as bluetooth, aux, rca, etc). There is also a volume knob that lights up. These lights go dim when the speakers have not been adjusted for awhile. There is also a connection on the back for regular instrument cables. I cannot wait to try these with my audio interface! The sound quality is amazing! For these to be desktop speakers, I wouldn't hesitate to use them on any important project that requires me to ensure I am putting out the best audio product. The bass is great and the speakers provide clear, crisp quality! Buy them, you won't regret it!
So right out of the box I was impressed with their size. They were bigger than I was originally thinking, but their size does not impact my setup. I use these with my gaming setup at home so they had plenty of room next to my monitors. You will want to note that the surface is slick, so be sure you have a strong grip on them by taking them out of the box and placing them on your table. Could be easy to drop if you are not paying attention. Next you will want to note that the main speaker, the default right, is the one with all the inputs on the back, and the volume dial on the front. They are not marked, so knowing this before you place them is handy. These are 2.0 speakers, no surround sound. You have 4 primary input options, There is a toggle button on the front ... You have 4 primary input options, There is a toggle button on the front of the main speaker that will allow you to quickly and easily switch between the sources, and bonus you even get an ALL option so you can hear them all at once. I initially connected these via bluetooth to my computer, I was hoping to be able to go wireless. The sound is really good, but as with Bluetooth there can be a slight delay between images on the screen and the sound that is accompanies then. So music would be a good source for bluetooth. Next I plugged in the included 4.5mm to RCA cable to the audio output on my computer. Now the sound was more in sync with the image on the screen. I enjoy being able to connect multiple devices, especially bluetooth, and to switch easily between them. The placement of the input button is nice, on the front next to the volume dial. I am very happy with these speakers and look forward to using them with my gaming system.
I was very impressed when I opened the box as they were larger than anticipated and heavier than anticipated. I expected bigger sound than what comes out of them, particularly bass which is a bit boomy and not tight like you would expect from a sub-woofer. Mid-rand and highs are just OK, but not great. I love the connection options and am currently using the Bluetooth option. This is selectable on the front of the right speaker along with a knob to change volume. They have an appropriately powered built-in amp that drives both speakers nicely. The two speakers are connected with a speaker cable. The instruction sheet is minimal, but there is not much to this if you have any sense at all - just connect the two speakers together with the speaker cable, plug in the ... I found Bluetooth to be fine for my use. Other say it lags, but I have not experienced that effect and it works fine for me. I suppose that my expectations for sound were too high since it is just a two-speaker set and does not include a separate sub-woofer, but the weight and size led me to expect something more that it delivers. They are a pretty good set of computer speakers, but I certainly would not put them in the category of reference speakers. If you are using them for everyday use as computer speakers and not listening to music critically, they will fit the bill for you but temper your expectations. They go into sleep mode when I take a break or turn off the computer at night and automatically wake up when resuming use or restarting the computer each morning. Set them once and forget them - a good, but not great set of computer speakers.
When I first ordered these I didn’t realize how big they would be, they are on the larger size at about 10 inches in height. What also comes with the size is heft, the JBL 104 BT Studio Monitor Speakers feel and look like a quality set of speakers. In the box you have the speakers (one Master Speaker and one Extension speaker), a power cord, a length of speaker wire to wire the extension to the master and a 3.5mm to RCA cord for connection to a PC and the master speaker. There are also 1/4 in TRS Inputs on the master speaker for connection of a monitor station etc. Another feature that adds to the versatility of the JBL 104 BT Studio Monitor Speakers is the fact that they have Bluetooth connectivity. I plugged the Master in, I ran my PC 3.5mm to RCA to the Master Speaker and wired the extension speaker to the master speaker. I needed to use my own wire as the wire provided was only about 6.5 feet and I needed 8 feet. The sound produced with the JBL 104 BT Studio Monitor Speakers coaxial drivers using my PC as the source with games, videos and movies was fantastic! Bass was rich (sometimes on the boomy side) and the overall sound was just pleasing to the ears. I paired the JBL 104 BT Studio Monitor Speakers with my iPhone 13 Pro Max and they played music via bluetooth effortlessly and sounded great. A cool feature making these some of the most versatile speakers I have seen is the fact that you can have up to 3 hard wired sources and bluetooth so all four sources can be listened to (one at a time) with no switching required. Versatility, quality, and great sound all in one package, I definitely recommend the JBL 104 BT Studio Monitor Speakers.
