I am a pretty serious Nordic Walker (like cross country skiing, but without the skis). I do a strenuous 5k almost every day and a more moderate 10k on the weekends. I have been wearing Hoka Bondi 8 running shoes, which are a great running shoe, but not ideal for walking. The large, cushioned heel interfered with long strides, and tended to cause shin splints (especially downhill where my foot would flop forward onto the flat bottom of the shoe). These shoes are a game-changer for walkers. The lack of a large heel encourages longer, smoother strides, and the curved sole allows the foot to roll over the top which reduces strain on the front of the shin (the difference is particularly noticeable when going downhill). I had a TMA operation due to melanoma on the bottom of my left foot. Lost 4 toes to the mid metarsal... only big toe remains. Regular shoes left me with a significant limp. Enough that I was worried I'd injure adjacent joints. While my foot doesn't want to rotate without the missing toes/ball of foot, the rocker sole gives me a new functional point of rotation that really improves my gait... Thank you!

This shoe has excellent support AND cushioning. The arch in the insole feels much like a new pair of Birkenstocks, and I expect the insoles to fully conform to my arch within a couple of weeks. I normally wear an 8.5 and that's the size I initially ordered; unfortunately, I had to exchange them for a size 9, which fit perfectly. Keen has outstanding customer service! They handled the exchange quickly and with little effort on my part.
As the title says, these are great after a break-in and adjustment period of about a week or two. I've gone through several super squishy foamed shoes from other brands (Nike, Adidas, New Balance), which is roughly on par with these after breaking in. The foam on these is about as soft as other foams but takes some time to get to that level of squish. The adjustment period is due to the EXTREME rocker geometry of this and the plate. For the first few days, you will find yourself standing on your toes repeatedly because of how extreme the geometry is, and the plate will take away from the overall squishiness of the shoe... until you get used to them. However, once the foam is broken in and becomes squishy, you get used to the rocker geometry, and you start to get the ... Highly comfortable, nice roomy toe box, and the nubuck/suede feels buttery.
Perfect fit, awesome construction. Rigid and aggressive rocker bottom, limiting stress and flex of the forefoot. Nice solution for people with limited joint mobility in their great toe.On hilly or uneven terrain the rocker bottom becomes a liability. But that s not what these are built for. Great for a sidewalk shoe, urban trail shoe, or even standing for extended periods (the rocker keeps your muscles and joints activated).
The Men’s WK400 is my first pair of Keens. I discovered the brand while reading reviews of a different major brand that many of my over 70-year-old friends wear. My goal was to find a pair of walking shoes that would fit secure enough to prevent falling. The reviewer said that Keens are made better, so I got on your website and somewhat warily ordered a pair, secure in knowing I could return them in thirty days. It’s the first pair of shoes I’ve ordered online because even in physical shoe stores, I am difficult to fit. One foot is slightly larger than the other. Hardly any brand fits me. When the WK400s arrived, I immediately saw how well-constructed they are. But would they fit? Like a glove. True to size. One foot is slightly larger than the other. Hardly any brand fits me. When the WK400s arrived, I immediately saw how well-constructed they are. But would they fit? Like a glove. True to size. The toes on both feet have enough room. They were so comfortable out of the box that I took a short walk outside. Each day since I’ve taken a longer walk.Yesterday was the definitive test—I drove to San Francisco in the early afternoon to see an evening play and walked around the city for four hours without experiencing any foot pain or strain. The curve technology provided a bouncy but tight and secure step as I walked at a brisk speed on sidewalks both new and crumbling. I’ll wear these on cement and asphalt in dry and rainy weather.Today I tried on shoes I own and realized that most of them fit poorly. I’ll donate them to a non-profit organization and buy only Keens from now on. In fact, I’ve already bought the Keen Steen hiking shoe, which also fits perfectly. Soon I’ll wear them on a long hike. I expect the same great experience with a different Keen on a different terrain.
I exploded my ankle with a grade 3 pilon fracture back in May '21. Long story short, I ended up having a complete (tibiotalar) fusion performed on my right ankle just a couple years after my original injury. Although I have to admit that I have had limited time in this footwear, I can already tell that the Keen WK400 shoes are exactly what I need. The (rocker, half circle, whatever-you-wanna-call-it) sole has performed exactly as advertised. Not only does it make my life easier as someone with zero ankle mobility, but can see it being an easy go-to shoe to anybody who just simply wants to make walking more enjoyable and effortless. 100% recommend.
Keen shoes have always fit my picky feet just right and these are no exception. I had some misgivings about the curved soles and they did tire my leg muscles in a unique way at first. However, I adapted quickly and like these a lot! I ve often avoided walking on pavement because it gives my old joints no joy, but these shoes make quite a nice difference in my hard-surface walking comfort. One other note, the curved sole makes simply standing still a dynamic process compared to typical flat soles. My knees and hips are actively adjusting in tiny ways to maintain balance, which makes standing more comfortable too. Well done!!
They make walking fun and effortlessly.I would like them with elastic laces that adjust as needed (Like a crank or someway to adjust the snuggness). Or at least offer them with elastic laces for people who can't/don't want tie laces, please.I installed my pair with elastic laces for easier on/off.
