Excellent photo transfer solution for high speed SD cards

I purchased this reader to plug into the front USB 3 slot of a Synology NAS. Using the USB Copy function on the NAS, I now have a 1 button solution for high speed photo transfers directly to my networked disk array. This reader works as expected with very fast transfer speeds (using a UHS-II SD card). The construction is durable. Though the product information says the device is optimized for Kingston cards, other SD card brands work perfectly fine. Finally, It works seamlessly with the Synology NAS. Other readers sold by B&H can be quite expensive. This one is very affordable and performs excellently.

Most new laptops do not include a card reader which is the case with my new laptop. Being a keen photographer, a card reader is essential. This is where the Kingston card reader came to play. It is an excellent choice as a card reader, accurate and precise.

I have mixed feelings for this card. I tested the speed of a Sandisk Extreme 256MB V30 UHS-I card and a Sandisk 128 Extreme Pro V90 UHS-II card. I tested them in the Kingston reader, cheapo XIT reader, and the built-in reader slot in my laptop. When I tested the 256 in the XIT, I got a speed of 20.781MB, in the laptop reader a speed of 84.175MB and in the Kingston 156MB ! ! ! I was extremely surprised the Kingston read my V30 card faster than the built-in laptop reader. GREAT JOB KINGSTON!!! Buuuuuuut I was disappointed when I tested the 128 V90 UHS-II card. When I tested the 128 in the XIT, I got a speed of 20.986MB and in the Kingston 156.25MB. (my laptop doesn’t have a slot for a full-size SD card to speed measure). I guess my transfer of pictures will be much faster using the Kingston in general. I just had high hopes for faster speeds on my V90.

I've used this with a UHS-II micro SD card (with a micro sd to sd adapter), and I was able to get about 120 MB/s sustained write speed, and about 250 MB/s sustained read speed. There's another review here that mentioned the lack of push-push connector, which would be nice to have, but this reader doesn't have one. You just push the card into the reader, and the friction fit keeps the card inserted. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it would just be nice to have.

If you read the reviews on other USB/SD readers you will see them melting or burning out over time. Almost all of them are off-brand names. Kingston is one of the few brand names selling these things and I can tell you it works well and allows my card to achieve it's advertised speeds! Just make sure you plug it into the blue tinted usb port!

After years uncomfortably using the card reader on the back of my iMac, I finally got this SD Card Reader from Kingston. It is also a lot faster than the one on my Mac. Construction is good and feels premium in the hands (nothing plasticky about it.Great buy from a company that knows a thing or two about digital media. I highly recommend it.

This card reader is small and compact. It was recognized right away by my computer. I have an HP desktop which has piss poor built-in SD card reader with severely limited read speed. My workflow is to transfer RAW images from my camera to the computer. Attached are the built-in SD card reader vs Kingston on a UHS-I class 3 sd card. 2.5x improvement on sequential read speed which is what is important to me. Price is right, performance is good.

This is the one I wanted but not the one that came.

Having an SD card reader that loads from the end like this one is very important to me. Sorry to say someone at B&H warehouse substituted a side load reader for the Kingston. These things are too cheap to complain about so I may try again to get the right one at a later date. This is the only time in 15 years that B&H has been less than perfect. Soundview

This reader is instantly recognized by my computer. And the transfer rate is speedy enough. But unlike an older Kingston reader that I have, it doesn't have a ""Push-Push"" card slot (a Push-Push card slot is the type where you push the card into the reader till it latches, then push the card again to release it). Push-Push connectors are easier to use. They provide an audible ""click"" and a positive feel when the card is fully inserted. What you get with this reader is a less sophisticated friction-fit connector. Basically, you insert the card into the slot as far as it will go. Yes, it works. But it's not as nice to use as the Push-Push type. PROS: Fast. Compact in size. CONS: No Push-Push card slot. Maybe because I'm usb 3.0 and not 3.2 but downloading 35 images from a UHS-II card took 42 seconds (from the time I hit import until LR ejected the card). The same card with the same images in a non-UHS II sd card reader took 46 seconds.I'm not sure that 4 seconds is worth $13. Maybe when I have a 1000 images on the card it will make a real difference but for now...meh!
