I own many Knipex pliers and they're all very good. But these cost quite a bit more than maybe they should. The locking version of these is even more crazily priced. They work very well, though! I like Roto-Clip clamps (I'm the only one) and these are the first thing I reach for to go after them. A note about the description saying they're "self-adjusting": if you have regular Cobras, when you release the silver button, you have selected your jaw width position and the two halves of the plier will not move from that pivot point. Not these pliers! When you select a spot with the silver button, you have selected the spot from which the pliers opening range will not get any bigger. But you can still slide the pliers up the teeth to a smaller range with no effort. I ... MoreI own many Knipex pliers and they're all very good. I thought mine were broken, but I saw a quick video about them at Knipex selling website and I took another look at my Cobras and my Cobra hose pliers. Normal Cobras have adjustment teeth on both sides of the slot. These hose clamp pliers, there are only teeth on one side of the slot. Now that I know I can slide the pliers into a certain adjustment range while reaching for a hose clamp, I will have to learn how to do it that way and get used to it. It might even be better! To date, I've just been poking at the button and selecting a size range and getting after it, like I do with my normal Cobras, which I use a lot more often.

I work as an Toyota mechanic by trade. I was looking for pliers that I could easily remove various clamps from radiator hoses, coolant bypass hoses, evap hoses, etc. Overall the idea of these pliers is really nice. The teeth/tips/retainers have a good bite, jaws open wide enough for just about any clamp, and the auto locking feature is really great (wish they were all like this). I do notice though that sometimes when a hose has slightly swollen due to age, these pliers will not close down far enough with the locking feature enabled to remove the clamp over the swollen hose. It does tend to make the retainer slip off the clamp. Also, out of all the Knipex pliers I have, this set is the smallest pair that I own at 10 inches in length. They can be great for tight spots when needed. I wish that Knipex made these particular pliers in a 12 inch length. I find that I reach for my Knipex 12 inch pliers more than I do for the 10 inch locking pliers I just bought. I also use the following Knipex tools: 12 inch cobra pliers (87 01 300) 16 inch cobra pliers (87 01 400) 22 inch cobra pliers (87 01 560) 7.25 inch side cutters (74 01 180) 10 inch side cutters (74 01 250)

If you're replacing all of the coolant system hoses, these specially-designed pliers are a godsend. Yes, at around $90, they aren't cheap. But they are the SINGLE BEST TOOL I have EVER used to remove steel clamps from automobile engine coolant hoses, especially large, radiator hoses. You can try using ordinary pliers or channel locks. You may very well injure one or more fingers using those primitive tools. The first time you EASILY remove a large steel hose clamp with this extremely high-quality custom clamp removal tool without injuring yourself, it will suddenly become apparent to you that this tool is worth every single penny. One of the best, highest-quality tools I've EVER used and owned! The ONLY difference between the 85 51 250 and the 85 51 250 AF is that ... MoreIf you're replacing all of the coolant system hoses, these specially-designed pliers are a godsend. Knipex creates excepional quality tools. This model of hose clamp pliers is no exception. It is admittedly a bit expensive but with proper care you have a lifetime tool. So in my opinion it is cost justified. In this particular model #85 51 250 you get a locking mechanism that is wonderful. The thickness of the tool is a definite asset when negoating tight quarters. I am completely satisfied after years of using the typical slip-joint pliers which appreately named do in fact slip. Worth the extra $$s!
The jaws on the tool were misaligned by 1/8in and they didn't close properly, leaving a 1/4in gap. For a quality tool I expected the jaws to line up and for the gap to be the minimum for a clic clamp. I exchanged the tool for a proper one. Thanks to Home Essentials Direct. If you buy quality and pay the price, don't settle for less. The pliers I finally got work great; better than the rest. Knipex is the best. The jaws are adjustable and it easily removes and replaces clic clamps over a wider range of sizes.
These pliers have made all my jobs involving hoses with spring clamps a breeze! I work on a lot of different cars everyday, and from intake hoses to radiator hoses on full size trucks down to subcompacts, they get the job done easily. I bought mine off the tool truck more than I would have paid on home essentials direct, but necessity dictates spending the money sometimes. These have replaced my other hose clamp pliers as the quality and versatility along with the locking mechanism makes them a breeze to use. Knipex definitely got it right with these. That person whose review says they’re too small and that the quality is bad has no clue what they’re talking about.
This is a quality and good looking product. I bought one for me and one for a present for a good friend. We both do small work on our vehicles and find those nasty OEM hose clamps to be a real pain in the rear. Using old vice grips which would slip and nick you or potentially cause the clamp to shoot off to who knows where days are gone. Prior to this i would replace the OEM clamp with a screw hose clamp because I did not want to deal with the OEM one ever again. We all know that they are not as good as the OEM and will eventually cut into the hose or cause other issues.Being able to now take off, adjust, and replace the OEM clamps with no issues whatsoever is a blessing in disguise. These things are so awesome to look at, hold and use. The fit is perfect for a person of my size (5"11'). I understand there is a bigger size but i am happy with this one for my needs. The finish is awesome, i see this as being a tool i will someday hand down to my children. If i am to complain about anything, is maybe i should have gotten one with the ratcheting system. Sometimes i find it a little difficult to release the retainer, but i figure that will come in time and practice.I will be for sure looking for more Knipex tools to add to my collection in the future.
It was time to flush the coolant in my truck. Since the radiator doesn't have a drain, I had to take off the lower radiator hose. Thankfully, this Knipex tool arrived only a few hours earlier. I had planned to do the job either way and was glad I didn't need to do it the old way with a pair of Channellock pliers. Seldom is access good enough; even in domestic pickups, for a straight shot at the spring clamp. The metal notched pad is pinned to the adjustable jaws and rotates so it won't pop off the spring clamp. I had it about 33°-45° off center and it held on tight. Usually I have to huff and puff and wrestle with the clamps, hoping the regular pliers won't pop off and pinch my palm with all the force of squeezing them and usually I toss the spring clamp because ... MoreIt was time to flush the coolant in my truck. This time however, I put the old clamp back on and it didn't even look like I had been in there. I'm super pleased with these and I wish I had always had them!
