I received a matte black Lamy Studio with a medium nib as a gift from my wife. I like a solid pen with some weight to it and this is just about perfect. The construction is very precise, everything fits flawlessly. It posts well and weight and balance are right on. The medium nib is fantastically smooth. I've since swapped it to a 1.1 stub which is just as nice. My main criticism for this pen - and the reason I deducted a star - is the grip section, and not for what you think. I happen to like the chrome finish. I don't think it is any more slippery than a very smooth resin or polycarbonate grip on other pens. What bothers me is the tapered shape. The way I hold pens, this causes things to feel constantly misaligned and uncomfortable. This is certainly built like a 'workhorse' pen but I find that I get a cramped hand very quickly and cannot use for anything other than short notes. I understand the design here, it was to eliminate the 'step' from the grip section & barrel as well as to have a smooth design while capped. I am an architect and have spent decades drawing & writing with drafting instruments that have thinner barrels and tend to grip a bit higher up, so for me this fatter tapered section isn't my favorite. I do currently have it inked and use it with hopes of finding a comfort zone, but I usually give up and rinse it out and grab another FP instead. Sadly I don't think the 2000 would work for me either since they seem similarly shaped. If you have calibrated your grip to drafting and technical instruments and are sensitive to grip size & shape this may not work for you and you may want to avoid it. However if the fatter tapered grip doesn't bother you, then this is absolutely a 5-star pen just get one!!!

Admittedly this is only my 2nd fountain pen however I absolutely love it. It's been the ONLY pen I've used - and I carry it everywhere. I don't write novels. My writing day to day is to make scratch notes and illustrations / sketches of my customer's gears, tools, drill bits, aerospace parts, etc - (i.e., little technical drawings with engineering lettering & dimensions... not exactly the Mono Lisa, but nice little sketches.) You can feel the exceptionally well built quality. The pen has nice weight and balance (whether posted or not posted). There's a sophisticated elegance. Nice matte finish with chrome accents. The gold tip "fine nib" has nice feedback with very slight (subtle) line variation. Everyone notices this pen when I pull out - lots of compliments.

This is a very elegant and reliable fountain pen. The color is a deep, dark green that seems to be a chameleon. In some lighting, it appears to be dark green with some subtle sparkle and other times, looks black. The extra fine nib is smooth as silk and performs flawlessly on any paper. The cap snap posts securely without having to worry about it coming off as long as you push it on until you hear it snap like it does when replacing the cap to close the pen. This was quite a challenge to try to find matching ink to use with it because of the color shifting that occurs. Second Lamy pen. The Studio is much better for me than the CP1 because I have bigger hands and this pen doesn't cause my hand to cramp up over time. I am using an extra fine nib and it writes well. The black grip is good and works as expected; I specifically avoided the other models because I didn't want a problem with slipping and I don't with this pen. Otherwise, it's an attractive pen that I received a complement on the other day as a colleague walked by. The only thing you need to worry about with this pen, and it is my main concern, is the brushed finish. Brushed finishes will eventually have their grooves flattened out in certain spots by contact with harder surfaces or impact from drops. I personally don't have a problem with that because I keep my pens away ... MoreSecond Lamy pen. Brushed finishes will eventually have their grooves flattened out in certain spots by contact with harder surfaces or impact from drops. I personally don't have a problem with that because I keep my pens away from surfaces that will damage them. Aside from that, any pen is going to get damaged or wear over time unless you keep it in a box. So, live a little and accept that you'll eventually replace it, but only after some beautiful years. And again, there are ways to put a brushed finish back on things or smooth it out so it's more polished. It's all up to what you consider beautiful. I'm happy with the purchase.
I have been using the Palladium finish version of the Lamy Studio with gold nib for about a month. The look and feel of the pen is solid and elegant in its simplicity. The writing is smooth and consistent.During my work day I use a pen for a few words or sentences at a time. Then set it down. So a priority for me was that the pen be able to cap and uncap quickly. A screw-on cap doesn't work well for that style of writing. So I wanted a pen with a snap on cap. I was thinking about a Diplomat Aero. I considered the Lamy 2000. But I choose the Palladium Finish version of the Studio, and I'm glad I did. I particularly like the clever way the cap clicks on to post. It posts securely without scraping the finish of the pen barrel. I particularly like the clever way the cap clicks on to post. It posts securely without scraping the finish of the pen barrel. That was a feature I had not anticipated and its a very nice touch. Most versions of the Studio have grips that are very slick. Many people have commented on that. I'm surprised that Lamy's thoughtful engineers have not corrected that problem. A slippery grip would make the pen uncomfortable to use. That would be a deal breaker for me. I could not recommend those versions. One of the reasons I choose the Palladium finish version, is that the grip section is not slick at all. It's a pleasure to hold and use. The Dark Brown Special Edition may be the only other version with a textured grip. My only regret is in not ordering an extra-fine nib. If you are used to a Japanese fine nib, the Studio Fine nib will seem a bit fat. In the end, this is a pen I can live with for a lifetime. I am very happy with it and recommend it highly.
The LAMY Studio in Imperial Blue is beautiful and vibrant pen. Like all pens in the Studio line, it has a very nice weight to it and the dimensions seem to fit my hand perfectly. The Studio line is my favorite LAMY offering so I am a little biased. Straight out of the box this pen has performed flawlessly and I am well pleased with it.Needless to say, as all Goulet Pen Company (GPC) customers know, GPC is simply the best vender, period. Accurate ordering, prompt processing, and fast shipping. GPC customers have to be the most satisfied fountain pen consumers in the country. The only way the purchasing experience could be better is if there were a GPC in every town and you could physically stop in, browse, and leave the store with your purchase in your hand. Smooth writer, controversial polished grip not a problem for me, in fact, I like the larger diameter for a confident grip I can relax with. I didn’t find a problem with perspiration and skin oil making the smooth grip slippery. Design is beautiful, finish also. The pen is balanced well for me without the cap, seems top heavy when secured to pen while writing. Cap has an irregular internal surface that can catch on nib while capping. I almost damaged the nib when it happened. So, pen needs to be carefully capped to avoid snagging nib tip to internal cap surface structure. This is a fine pen for the money. Though the nib is mostly the same as the lower priced Safari, they don’t perform the same for me because I hold a pen high on the grip making the Studio more ... MoreSmooth writer, controversial polished grip not a problem for me, in fact, I like the larger diameter for a confident grip I can relax with. Though the nib is mostly the same as the lower priced Safari, they don’t perform the same for me because I hold a pen high on the grip making the Studio more comfortable and flexible than the Safari. These nibs are very smooth, but still have just a little occasional drag that varies with paper and pressure. I don’t mind this at all as the general performance is smooth. The fine nib writes between a fine and medium compared to my other pens. That works well for me using Iroshizuku kon-Peking, a wetter ink. The flow is full and even, no skipping, but it tends to fill in small loops of my smaller cursive style, a characteristic of the nib/ink combination I’ll adjust to. I like the pen, it will be my go to daily writer.
The Goulet Pen Company is my go to fountain pen retailer. As an experiment, I purchased four fountain pens from four different (one each) retailers. Goulet provided the best shopping experience and most hassle free shipping and delivery experience of the group. That earned Goulet my business for good. I am very happy I went with this next level fountain pen. So far, I have purchased four LAMY Studio fountain pens - this Black Forest version which is gorgeous (I am gifting to my youngest child because she has actually been to the Black Forest), a black version, a silver version, and the imperial blue version. Each one has a different nib thickness. The pen arrived really quickly (2 weeks, even though I don't live in the U.S.). The texture of the body feels amazing, the weight of the pen uncaped is great (caped feels a little heavy). Although at times it feels like the cap might scratch the body when uncaping, it hasn't happend to me and I believe someone really needs to be rough on the pen for the paint to peel off. The grip section was my main concern, because I haven't had a FP with a metal section and the main criticism on this pen is exactly that. Still, although I find it slippery due to my sweaty hands (the pen rolls, making the top of the nib to point sideways), it's comfortable and it has a nice weight to it. I do think I need to get used to the metal section and maybe I need to use it uncaped. In relation to the nib (F), I cleaned the pen before using it and when I filled the converter, I did it without attaching the section to it, so it took a while to start writing. At first I thought I had a defective nib, because it relly took about 7 minutes for the ink to start flowing, but after I applied a little pressure to write, the ink started flowing and it was one of the smoothest writing experiences I've had, especially with a Fine nib. I used the Iroshizuku Ku-Jaku ink (that I also bought from Goulet).Overall, the pen is great. The tines on the nib might be to close and I think that's also why the pen took a while to start writing, but nothing that brass sheet won't fix. The grip section might be slippery if you have sweaty hands, but I think one can get used to it. I will try this as my EDC and if I like it a lot, I will consider buying a gold nib for it. Lastly, I really want to thank the Goulet team (specially Adrianne and Rachel) for helping me to pick a pen and for having such an amazing service. Also, I'd like to apologize if at any moment I made it seem like I was calling Adrianne inexpert, because that wasn't at all my intention and I think I just expressed what I wanted in a really awkward manner. Anyway, I really appreciate everything the Goulet company does and what it stands for.
This is my second Lamy purchase. The first has been used to the point of needing refilled (the fine point writes economically, and so it lasted quite awhile). I have not refilled it, but I am sure that it is not that difficult. I loved it so much that I wanted another in reserve. The new Lamy writes just as nice and smooth as the first. Nice brushed red finish.I love this brand and series because of its durability for the cost. I have dropped them and occasionally and the cap has flown off the end (I did not secure it well), and they don’t dent or chip or scratch the finish, or affect the nib (I think I dropped one on the nib). The finish has also shown to be durable. However, I do admit that I take real good care of my two pens by keeping them in a leather ... MoreThis is my second Lamy purchase. However, I do admit that I take real good care of my two pens by keeping them in a leather holder, but there are times when they go into my pocket with my keys. Regardless, being a bit rough with them does not seem to affect them. For me, this justifies the cost. I have never spent $80 on a pen before, but I don’t regret the purchase.By the way, I let my wife try my pen, and she did not want to give it back. She will get one in her own color for Christmas.
