As a machinist myself, my guess is that after they pin the jaws together to grind them, they are either grinding too quickly, not keeping theirwheel sharp enough, or not using enough coolant, causing the mating surfaces between the jaws to warp given that the jaws only start to get excessively tight when the pliers are almost fully opened or almost fully closed. I could be completely wrong though as I haven't really spent an exorbitant amount of time diagnosing the issue because this is a tool I bought to do work with, not do work on. In the end, I in no way want to portray the idea that I regret my purchase and would do so again as all the tools do technically function and this tool should not be expected to be a sole replacement for multiple dedicated tools but rather the tool you are far more likely to actually have on your person given its weight, thickness, and carrying options.

I bought this with the intent of using it on my backpacking/hiking trips, along with some basic daily tasks. It was a bit stiff to open at first, but that loosened up overtime so no big deal at all. Knife was extremely sharp in box. All the tools worked as expected, only complaint was the Ferrocerium Rod. The useable part of it just barely comes over the plastic that encases it. So you really only get a few good strikes before it's worn down below the plastic point. In a survival situation, only getting a few chances to light a fire can be a pretty big deal. Once the rod it worn down to the plastic, it's basically useless. Besides that single flaw, it's perfect.

Get a 1/4" hex extension and some hex bits and you've got yourself a L-handled wrench and a pocket-sized tool kit (I've got Allen wrenches up to 10mm, hex-head drivers, torx up to T40, plus all the handy flat inserts from Leatherman). Add a 1/4" socket adapter and the sky's the limit! (well, torque is the limit, but you get the picture). To my surprise, I'm impressed with the saw, I used to carry a wire saw for trimming firewood and making kindling but that's one less discrete thing I need to bring camping. I love my new Signal. I use it frequently and the blades are holding up well. My one observation/critique is that the bottom serrated portion of the blade has cut my thumb more than once whilst opening the blade in the usual thumb opening motion. As the blade opens using the right side of your thumb, your thumb naturally begins roll with the blade as it moves from the closed '6 o'clock' position to the fully opened '12 o'clock' position. Somewhere around the '9 o'clock' position your thumb can get caught by the serrations and you end up losing a small slice of flesh. It's happened a few times and I shrugged it off but this last time it dug a bit deeper and drew a little blood. I'm no stranger to knives that open in this manner and never had any issue with my ... I wanted something in between size as the ST300 was never carried on my person but some tasks were a little too much for the Juice. This tool had a great balance of weight and tool selection. The can opener is a must in a multi tool for me. I like the changeable wire cutters and flat driver capability. I love this multiool. I've had a fair few Leatherman multitools over the years, and this one has the seems practically tailored to my needs. That being said, I do have 2 minor dislikes about it compared to other Leatherman multitools. First, the pliers are not spring loaded. Other multitools I've had had spring loaded pliers, which I find slightly easier to operate than non spring loaded. Not a deal breaker for me, but noteworthy. Secondly when using the screwdriver, awl, and can opener/wire stripper the handles cannot fully close because they come in contact with the hammer end of the tool. Again, not a deal breaker, just something I have liked about other Leatherman multitools that I don't particularly like about this one.

I felt pretty confident however, considering there is a projected image of what the product will look like with your uploaded photo. I’m so happy that I took a screenshot of what their projection of my image was. Compared to what I got it’s absurd. I could barely see the image that I chose. It’s only discernible to myself and my husband because it is a very special landscape that we know intimately. What was more disappointing than the result of the customization was the customer service that followed. The signal was returned to me with a black greasy substance all over the various ... I was told I would get a call back several hours later as a representative reached out to her superiors to see what could be done since it’s a custom item, they don’t accept returns or refunds. That is definitely clearly stated on the page but considering how it was given to me and the customization not resembling anything close to what was projected, somethings should’ve been done more expediently. They also should’ve asked to see my photos. There was a complete lack of care. If they had just asked to see what I received they could’ve offered better customer service. I did get a call back offering to refund me the cost of customization. I was told that I would get an email when that refund was processed. That was over three weeks ago. I even emailed them again a few days ago asking where was my measly refund and I was told it’s still in process. I don’t believe that in 2021 a company as big as Leatherman takes a few weeks to refund $20. There’s a complete lack of concern and quality control which was apparent in how this was sent to me. I was advised to buy a lubricating product to clean the whole multi tool and get rid of that grease that was everywhere. It’s kind of absurd that anyone would need to do that on something that’s brand new but I did it and it did clean up the product. I had to spend a good 45 minutes with a Q-tip getting in every nook and cranny. I’ve owned many multi tools before & this one feels a little clunky to open the main body and switch between pliers and the main blades. It’s not intuitive at all and it’s not smooth. Overall, wish I never fell for the ads on Instagram.

The paint has minimal rub off considering being in my pocket and using several times a day while working on my cars and fixes around the house. Functionality wise it has been solid. I purchased the ratcheting bit extension at same time to use 1/4in bits mainly for an adapter for small sockets. Still operates smooth no play in moving parts. The pliers are strong and the wire cutters can cut through a nail without much effort. Even grabbed a different multi tool to try to cut the same nail and it was not able to without feeling like they were going to break. Very impressed with the wire cutters. I ... I have used the sharpener a couple of times and it does a good enough job on the straight edge of the blade, but it works perfectly for the serrated part. The ferro rod for me was easier to strike than the one on the Gerber survival knife. Though the Gerber did produce larger sparks. The awl on the signal is quite durable and went through pvc no problem. A file and ruler combo would be a valuable addition to the signal other than not having that it is my favorite multi tool and even favorite knife.
