As a lifelong 44-year-old enthusiast, I must say all negative reviews are indeed warranted. The construction of the bow was a calamity. As other reviewers have noted, the blue pieces don't hold attachment if any-and I mean any- lateral pressure is applied when connecting the sides to the internal frame. When sliding the sections of Barad Dur into place, nothing felt "janky". When attempting to slide the bow into place, I felt like I was handling a faberge egg.I purchased 2 sets upon release; one for myself which I have successfully built and have displayed (which as a display piece I absolutely love), and the other as a gift to my brother's son. I have advised that when they arrive at bag 4 they are in for a lot of frustration. With the design quality I've grown ...Ā MoreAs a lifelong 44-year-old enthusiast, I must say all negative reviews are indeed warranted. However, given the unmatched quality I've spent a lifetime enjoying, I consider this a rare mistake.

I am a HUGE Jaws fan, and once I heard about this set I knew it was a day-one purchase for me. The attention to detail is amazing, and the attempts to recreate the Orca as it appeared on screen since 1975 are commendable. With that said, I must say this is the most unnecessarily complex LEGO build I've ever done. The boat feels flimsy at nearly every touch, which is only amplified as you must manipulate the boat constantly while continuing to build on it. I spent more time replacing parts already placed, as they would fall off (especially those blue pieces on the underside - those who have built it know what I'm talking about) when trying to place other pieces. I had no choice but to use a drop or two of glue in a couple of spots. Also, the decision to require the mast lines to be tied on rather than have ball joints on either end (it would work if the strings were cut to the perfect length on either side) is a real head-scratcher. It's finished, but I am hesitant to touch it again and have to put something back together again. I think more time and care could be taken for future builds to use more pieces that actually fit together and lock in completely rather than having them partially rest on flat pieces for mere aesthetics.

I'll start with the bad and it's a very short list: My primary complaint with this build is the front of the boat. You build a triangular support piece and the sides attach to it and its very fragile and only being held on with 1 stud and when placing the sides on it, it can come undone and there is no way to fix it without taking apart the entire structure and rebuilding it, so I applied too much pressure when putting a side on and sure enough the stud in the middle came undone and I ended up building the whole bag twice so that was frustrating. That's it, that's my only complaint. The Good: This set is truly spectacular. The pictures simply don't do it justice. This is a set that you need to build and see in person to truly appreciate how beautiful it really is. ...Ā MoreI'll start with the bad and it's a very short list: My primary complaint with this build is the front of the boat. This is a set that you need to build and see in person to truly appreciate how beautiful it really is. Every detail is just spot on. This set is also a lot bigger then the pictures make it look so make sure you have a good sized spot to put it. I don't think they could have come up with a better Jaws set. It's exactly what it needs to be. The price is worth every penny, so do yourself a favor and grab this set!
So, after reading several reviews and having already completed my build I thought Iād leave my honest opinion.Jaws is only my second build, (my first being R2D2), and yes, everyone is right, the bow is fiddly and fragile, so after my first attempt failed, I slowed down, (the excitement of the build and wanting to complete it quickly meant I was desperate to finish it!).Once I slowed down and used less pressure it all came together.I know it may sound weird, but I love overcoming a challenge. The entire build probably took me around 5 hours, (split across 5 days), (and I know some of you may laugh at the length of time it took, but as I mentioned, this is only my second ever build).I did encounter one other tiny SNAFU when trying to attach Bruce to the base, ...Ā MoreSo, after reading several reviews and having already completed my build I thought Iād leave my honest opinion.Jaws is only my second build, (my first being R2D2), and yes, everyone is right, the bow is fiddly and fragile, so after my first attempt failed, I slowed down, (the excitement of the build and wanting to complete it quickly meant I was desperate to finish it!).Once I slowed down and used less pressure it all came together.I know it may sound weird, but I love overcoming a challenge. The entire build probably took me around 5 hours, (split across 5 days), (and I know some of you may laugh at the length of time it took, but as I mentioned, this is only my second ever build).I did encounter one other tiny SNAFU when trying to attach Bruce to the base, again, I realised that I needed to use less pressure. The string from the mast doesnāt leave much room for error, too tight and you bend the mast, too loose it looks naff! But itās these little things that make us slow down and take time. Iām a believer that things in life donāt always work first time, and if they did that would somehow be boring.I highly recommend this set. It gave me so much joy to build, the detail is brilliant, the idea is excellent and the finished product gives so much joy. I even splashed out on a display case for it!I actually thought the price was reasonable too.Thank you Lego for bringing this idea to life!
I agree with a few other builders here that the bow design of this model is flawed. This is a challenging model to build, and it is rated for 18+.When completed - a very eye pleasing Lego set.But the bow, did I mention the bow ?In the instruction manual, from steps 79 to 88 you assemble a left and right inside bow assembly. There is a 1x6 light blue plate that is then attached by a 1x2 light blue slope curve block. In instruction 101, you are shown to connect a finished exterior bow assembly to the above interior assembly. The interior assembly will collapse, again and again. You will need to tear down the assembly to access and rebuild the light blue blocks.Even if you manage to complete the mounting of the exterior hull design, it is just a matter of ...Ā MoreI agree with a few other builders here that the bow design of this model is flawed. You will need to tear down the assembly to access and rebuild the light blue blocks.Even if you manage to complete the mounting of the exterior hull design, it is just a matter of time and movement - and that blue plate assembly will fail. After several beverages, I did the unimaginable, and I cut a 1x8 plate to a 1x7, to make a solid connection on the interior hull assembly. In steps 79 and 84 in the instruction manual, I replaced the 1x6 plate with the custom 1x7 plate - and did not use the 1x2 curved slope. And Bobs your uncle, solid construction and no failure in the interior hull design.I am ashamed of myself, but the custom block was the only way to keep my sanity.Otherwise a brilliant model.
I was excited to build this set, and it was going pretty well right up until I had to build the bow of the boat. I'm not sure what happened during the engineering process over at LEGO, but this thing is one of the most delicate and finicky sets I have ever built. Near the end of the bow process, a small piece that is attached near the beginning of that section in the instructions can come off with very minimal pressure applied when attaching the sides. This prompted me to take it apart and try again, thinking I didn't do it right. Unfortunately, it happened a second time even after taking more care to ensure everything was properly built. On my third try, I was able to VERY gently attach the sides without dislodging the smaller piece, however when I finally attached ...Ā MoreI was excited to build this set, and it was going pretty well right up until I had to build the bow of the boat. On my third try, I was able to VERY gently attach the sides without dislodging the smaller piece, however when I finally attached the bow to the rest of the ship, that piece came off again. Since it can't be seen and I am only displaying this, I can let it go. Overall, it's a neat set and cool for Jaws fans. I just wish the engineers had found a better way to make the bow section of the boat.
I have put a few Lego sets together. My first build experience was the Home Alone house. I loved it, took pictures throughout the build, and clocked my time working on the set. It was neat to see the references and how things came together. Ultimately, this has been my experience on every build I have completed so far. From wildflowers, to Jurassic Park vehicles, to the Hocus Pocus house, I have looked forward to my builds. However, this set did a couple of things that no other set has. It made me consider returning the set and forced me to use super glue to have a few pieces stay together long enough to get to the next step. It made me consider returning the set and forced me to use super glue to have a few pieces stay together long enough to get to the next step. Putting the bow of the ship together required me to super glue some of the support pieces together - allowing them to stay together as I turned the build upside down and attempted to add the additional pieces to complete the current step. While the directions were adequate in showing how to build this section, the pieces did not supply enough support in order to keep the structure together while moving on to the next step.Overall this build is fragile. Pieces fall off from picking it up and moving it around. The strings on the boat fall off of the wheels constantly, and pieces of the shark's tail are held on with only a peg or two. While I determine the final home for this display, I have left the piece right where I completed it - afraid to move it more than I need. This is sad because every other set I have completed feels indestructible. I feel that if I were to drop the Home Alone house, there would be minimal repairs needed. However, if I look at the Jaws set wrongly, I need to get out the instruction booklet again in order to repair the damage. Finally, while this set has more than one way of displaying it, either way results in unused pieces. If you choose to display the shark on his display base, it sort of renders the whole ocean diorama useless. On the contrary, if you display the shark and the boat on the ocean display base, then you are left with half a shark just sitting there. While I am happy that I purchased this set, I feel that there are many things that could have been changed or tweaked to add strength to the build. I am a fan of Jaws, but building this set reminded me of Jaws 3. It was a Jaws movie, but just not the best one!
This was a ālove at first sightā set when revealed and I was excited to put it with my Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark displays, to make a Spielberg trio. Having finally got my eager paws on it Iām very happy and, if like me, youāre a fan of Jaws, how is this not in your basket already?Excellent Minifigs, the superb Orca boat, and the amazing shark build will have you happier than a great white in chum filled waters. Even if youāre not such a film fan, thereās still lots to like here, and the Orca will look great slotted into the docks of many a LEGO city. Even if youāre not such a film fan, thereās still lots to like here, and the Orca will look great slotted into the docks of many a LEGO city. Itās an absolute beauty of a boat! The first āooh!ā moment with this set was slightly unexpected, though, coming when I opened the box and found all paper packing for the different build bags (other than one tiny plastic bag). These are more sustainable, robust, open neatly, store well, and have a far nicer feel than plastic. More of this in future sets please LEGO!As you dig through the contents, youāll see it is good value, with 1497 bricks, three of which are big uns - new 16x16 Dark Blue Plates, which are used to form much of the setās base. I doubt many will use the optional tail part that comes on a stand, and while itās cool to have that option, itās more bricks to use on your MOCs if you donāt need it!I found a few build steps that were prone to popping apart during the construction of the Orca, but this was because of the ambitious design. There are many clever stages in the boat build - inverted and angled parts joined in ingenious ways ā that will bring a smile to the most experienced buildersā faces. The string attachment sours the mood a little, however. The rigging on each side of the mast is my least favourite part of the set, fitted with a towball on one end but only a handle tile to attach the string to on the other. If you apply it tigh, youāll bend the flexible mast and spoil the overall look. If you apply it even a little loose, it will sag, and spoil the overall look. Thereās no sweet spot here (I spent a good bit of time changing the tension to try and solve the problem) without doing some full redesign, which is a shame when so many other details are so great. The presentation of the whole scene is beautiful with off angle elements, dramatic waves, and parts breaking out of the display baseās boundaries.Iāve saved the shark to last and itās a magnificent build. Lots of SNOT techniques, with clever combinations of angles and parts. I wonder how many hours of trial and error were put into making the greatest of great white sharks look... really, really great. They were worth it! My favourite part here might be the multi-angled interior of the mouth, with rows of deadly looking fangs.Overall, despite a few quibbles, this is a brilliant set! One of the best-looking boats Iāve seen, fine Minifigs, a truly epic shark, and a fitting tribute to a fantastic film. Itās way up there on my 2024 favourites list.
Iāve waited for this set for quite awhile! Although not perfect it did not disappoint. I look at it complete and canāt help but remember certain lines spoken during the movie, even sometimes reciting them to myself! I really enjoyed the build; however, Iām curious as to why the sample submitted to Lego Ideas was not the one that was used for this set. Two things that couldāve been included in this set: One, two more cage pieces. Why only two with the set? Two more couldāve been included to make an even four. The little gray retainer piece could be moved further out to accommodate four cage pieces and the two air tanks could be moved right next to the exhaust pipe. This is what I did because I had two matching cage pieces from a previous Lego set. Two, the side fishing pole on the cage side of the boat. The way itās positioned itās impossible to open the window. No problem. A little āLego fire extinguisher top handle pieceā can be put in its place followed by a one-lock Lego piece connected to the gold colored fishing reel type piece. Boom. You can open the window and have the fishing pole sticking out a tad outside the boat that can go forward or backward. Issue solved. Maybe two small beds in the cabin wouldāve been neat but other than the stuff I mentioned, Iām very satisfied with the Orca!
