Amazing, Complex build, App works well.

It would've made this set exclusive, and higher in demand. All in all though, It's a great set.

Cheaper than buying the hub/motors

I purchased this set because it was cheaper than purchasing the hub and motors individually. That is the main reason I would recommend anyone to purchase this, especially if you find it on sale. For the set itself, the build was ok - fun, but a bit short and would've appreciated more pieces given the price. That being said, it has a good variety to make your own custom creations and you can take the hub and motors to motorize your other sets. The car itself is ok for indoor play, but a bit slow for the outdoors. I also find the car quite ugly, so I tore it down after a couple hours and built a F1 car out of the pieces. The Top Gear licence is pretty much wasted on this product. But the car itself is ugly, slow, and a wasted opportunity for the Top Gear branding.

Purchased this kit for my 8 year old son for Christmas, and he's really quite the accomplished builder already. This kit is a very enjoyable build and is a solid design. My review is based on the battery power pack that didn't work, and it is certainly difficult to watch your son work very hard on something and it fails to function as it should. Together we both worked through troubleshooting the issue several times over, from batteries, to proper install, to cable placements. The power for the vehicle is a very simple and functional design, so there's only a handful of possible problems to address.....but still not working. This review is out of more frustration than anything else, as our family loves the LEGO brand and has for many decades. I’m at the age where i only care about paying my bills so i was very happy that my sister surprised me with this on my bday. I couldn’t wait to build it and i enjoyed every second definitely cheered me up and broke up the monotony of my 60 hour work week schedule. I love the attention to detail and the construction of this model was methodically thought out; although you could probably add a couple more arrows in the directions to show where pieces snap together i had to do a few double takes to assemble. My only issue is that the app might need some minor adjustments. When shifting gears it will show on the app but physically the car is not accelerating it just maintains the same speed; i tested this using both manual and automatic transmission; this happens sometimes not always. Also the tilt mode for steering only works if you hold your phone perfectly center but even then turning can be tricky. I am using an i-phone, but this may be a firm ware issue. On the other hand i think its incredible that you programmed this car to shift gears and for the most part it physically adjusts speed. I love the extra layer of depth that the app provides with sound, challenges and the ability to drive the car using different modes.

First Technic Set

I have been around LEGO my whole life and have been more serious about LEGO as a hobby in the last four years or so. This is my first real Technic set (I'm excluding a small $10 set I picked up a couple years back). I have always been intrigued by Technic but was never quite willing to pick one up, as I preferred to spend the money on a modular or other Creator Expert build. I decided to put my curiosity to rest with the Rally Car, and I am very pleased with my decision. The build was fun and challenging, while maybe a little tedious. Initially I was upset that the set does not come with a remote controller and is dependent on an app. I like to use LEGO as a means of stepping away from my phone not being on it more. However, the many features within the app, like the time trial races and motion controlled steering have convinced me that the app is a bit superior to a remote controller. For the price I do wish the car was a bit faster, however it really isn't that bad. For what it lacks in speed, this car makes up for in steering and control. Overall, I would highly recommend this set to any LEGO fan who is curious about Technic.

Fun for a while but poor value, few moving parts

I'm a big Lego Technic fan and have grown up building and enjoying increasingly expensive and complex kits.I was bought this for my birthday and at first was very pleased, but as my 2 hour build time suggests this kit isn't very complex at all, visually apparent when scanning the parts bags by the severe lack of gears, springs, pneumatics or any of the cool stuff that makes the more expensive builds generally more fun and challenging. What you get instead is a Bluetooth controller module and motors which are very impressive, but make you quickly realise is where all the cost is for this kit (along with the Top Gear branding), as the parts list is really quite basic. The inclusion of a differential is cool, but it's lacking any sort of suspension - without it the ... MoreI'm a big Lego Technic fan and have grown up building and enjoying increasingly expensive and complex kits.I was bought this for my birthday and at first was very pleased, but as my 2 hour build time suggests this kit isn't very complex at all, visually apparent when scanning the parts bags by the severe lack of gears, springs, pneumatics or any of the cool stuff that makes the more expensive builds generally more fun and challenging. What you get instead is a Bluetooth controller module and motors which are very impressive, but make you quickly realise is where all the cost is for this kit (along with the Top Gear branding), as the parts list is really quite basic. The inclusion of a differential is cool, but it's lacking any sort of suspension - without it the car simply beaches whenever you go over a bump. The smartphone app (at least for Android) is quick, intuitive and works well - presumably another factor in the high cost of the kit though. And if the hardest part is fiddling with all the decals then you know you're in trouble ;)Personally I think it would have been worth spending a little more and getting the actual 4x4 truck, or saving up and getting the big digger. But I won't tell my wife that...

Slightly Underwhelmed

This arrived safe and well packaged. It was disappointing to see a couple of stickers slapped on the box of the set. Many of my friends are serious collectors and would have been unable to use this for their mint collections. Mosy LEGO retailers understand their customers with this regard so have stopped putting stickers on boxes - IWOOT is yet to catch on to this! It will prevent AFOLs from ordering from this retailer. The set itself was a fairly quick and easy Technic build. It is much smaller than expected. It took a few minutes to realise that these new battery boxes have a pull out tray for the batteries - and actually takes x6 batteries. Once I was up and running I was quite let down by the speed. Being a Top Gear licenced product I was expecting quite a bit more power! I have also watched the LEGO marketing video for this set where the Stig drives the car around the LEGO House - even this implies that the car would be considerably faster. But unfortunately it is not. If you're not a fan of applying stickers to LEGO models then you will be appalled by this set... it has loads of stickers! Personally I don't apply them and I think the models look cleaner without them. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this set at it's RRP, but if it's on special offer, grab it. It's a set full of great Technic parts that can be used to just create your own (better) model. Have fun!

I am picky about what LEGO I buy due to the price. In Australia this costs $200 which is very steep. The power function parts are astronomical in price. The issue I had was the app does not have a light switch so what is the use of having 4 ports. I downloaded the Powered up app to see if I could rebuild the code myself but the code cannot do what the actual app does which is really poor form from LEGO. I did get the light to work but not with all other functionality. Hope that this gets fixed. The light cost $40 which is crazy and Australia has a lack of parts which is horrible. I did get the light to work but not with all other functionality. Hope that this gets fixed. The light cost $40 which is crazy and Australia has a lack of parts which is horrible. Everything costs double. For such a light product to ship it should be 50% lower in price. All in all besides the price it is a very sturdy build and is fun to use with motors. The car drives fine and the motors work fine.I did not bother with the stickers as they came a little bit bent in the sealed box. Please fix how you package stickers MR LEGO but found that you can get different colour parts to make the car look much cooler just not in Australia.Have to give it a 3 based on the price. If price is not an issue then you should get one.

So first off this is a great looking model. It’s got some really nice details but sadly that mostly comes from the many stickers it has.I would say the kit is expensive considering the number of actual parts so I’m guessing most of the cost is in the 2 motors and the Bluetooth hub.The build itself is quite simple and didn’t take that long which was disappointing considering the price but still a fun build.Lastly driving with the app. This is good fun as you can use gyro control as well or even drive manually where you pick the speed. It is unfortunately WAY too slow especially when driven in auto mode as despite the name never seems to want to get into top gear.Overall this is a nice kit to build but it’s too expensive, there’s too much reliance on stickers ... MoreSo first off this is a great looking model. I got this as a birthday present so I am quite disappointed with it, might not have been if the car was twice as fast. LEGO you can do so much better than this.

pieces potential, but poor model

I bought this set with the project of using the motors and pieces to help me make MOC cars. So I'm not really disappointed. Overall, I think the price is decent when you compare to powered up items sold separately, plus it comes with many pieces. I have a few problems with this rally car.- There is a problem in the front wheels alignment which make it lean left when supposed to go straight. Also, the design does not make it possible to fine tune it.- The car is really heavy, so it's not as fast as it could be, and make it almost impossible to climb hills.- The powered up app does not have any instructions so I guess I'll have to figure out myself how to program. I'm lucky to already have done a little programming a few years ago in university, but I'm pretty ... MoreI bought this set with the project of using the motors and pieces to help me make MOC cars. I guess for now I'll stick to the rally car template. But for kids, it could have been nice to have a friendly user environnement to use the motors.
