LEGO 42109 Technic App-Controlled Top Gear Rally Car

I bought this set because it is different from my other sets, which just sit on my shelf, getting gusty, only to be built, and rarely played with. Now, this has the fun of building it, but more after your done, rewarding you with access, almost like motivation, the app, which allows you to control it. The app works well, and there are different control setups, so you can choose the one you prefer. Only 6 batteries and you can pop some new ones in when they die. The app even has a calibration system, shown as "The Workshop", which calibrates the steering if your vehicle is out of sync. I purchased this set because it was cheaper than purchasing the hub and motors individually. That is the main reason I would recommend anyone to purchase this, especially if you find it on sale.For the set itself, the build was ok - fun, but a bit short and would've appreciated more pieces given the price. That being said, it has a good variety to make your own custom creations and you can take the hub and motors to motorize your other sets. The car itself is ok for indoor play, but a bit slow for the outdoors. I also find the car quite ugly, so I tore it down after a couple hours and built a F1 car out of the pieces.The Top Gear licence is pretty much wasted on this product. Purchased this kit for my 8 year old son for Christmas, and he's really quite the accomplished builder already. This kit is a very enjoyable build and is a solid design. My review is based on the battery power pack that didn't work, and it is certainly difficult to watch your son work very hard on something and it fails to function as it should. Together we both worked through troubleshooting the issue several times over, from batteries, to proper install, to cable placements. The power for the vehicle is a very simple and functional design, so there's only a handful of possible problems to address.....but still not working.This review is out of more frustration than anything else, as our family loves the LEGO brand and has for many decades.
